13th century actually. I think no one actually knows how the modern heart symbol evolved to become a representation of love since the actual human heart looks nothing like that :s13:

Anyway, nothing wrong with a heart shaped diamond if that's what your gf wants. If I'm not wrong, JP doesn't actually sell any heart shaped diamonds so the one they showed you is probably from House of Hung. They have a rather fluid business relationship so they do cross-recommend stocks from either shop.

House of Hung is Paul Hung's family business, if I am not wrong. So it is a case of you help me, I help you kind of a business relationship.

In my opinion, the IF and VVS2 clarities are a waste of your buck if the VS2 is eye-clean. Why pay extra for something which you cannot see? I would suggest the 0.44 option in this case.

Agreed, even up close, its very hard to notice clarity. So it depends on what kind of consumer are you, the value kind that doesn't mind to cut corners for a better deal, or the quality kind that insist on excellent quality at the expense of a smaller stone for the same price.

Most here so far seems the quality kind, because maybe a little scared to go the value route, which doesent mean you can't get a quality product. I'm a value guy that got an eye clean 0.7ct SI2 for under 3k.

If VVS2 to IF is only $100 diff, I would consider it. That's 2 clarity grades up!

I am a value fella also haha. Your 0.7 carat SI2 came with an awesome price tag man. Good buy!

He can invest on a larger rock with that additional $100. Not to say 0.1 carat larger or what la but larger than what he is currently getting lo.

not necessarily. if it came down to $100 to upgrade to an IF or $100 to upgrade to a stone that is 0.01 to 0.05 carats larger, I'd pick the IF just for kicks. Both are imperceptible to the human eye, but an IF is more impressive on paper than a minute carat weight upgrade.

To use an analogy using HWZ terms since HWZ is predominantly an IT forum - If I have the budget to choose between 2133mhz RAM or 3200mhz RAM, the increase in clock speed does not translate much into real world performance, but I might buy 3200mhz RAM just for kicks if the price difference between the two sets of RAM wasn't much.

Btw, I have refrained from commenting too much on this 0.7 carat SI2 for under $3k. But let me just say, at the end of the day, there is a reason why this 0.7 carat SI2, which apparently looks like a 1 carat simply due to a tapered ring band, is under $3k. Is it a value buy? Sure it is, depending on what your criteria is. But on an apples to apples comparison, is it fair to say that it is better value for money compared to a similar sized diamond with HCA score < 1.4 and top notch light performance as determined by ASET scope examination? Both a Honda and a Lamborghini will get you from point A to point B, but you can't say the Honda is better value for money simply because it can accomplish that while being a mere fraction of the price of a Lamborghini. To do that would be equivalent to the VTEC fanboys saying exotic cars are shite because their modded Civic can do a faster quarter mile. :s13:

At the end of the day, what is good value for money depends on what your individual criteria is.

BTW, I agree fully with what LL1986 and teqrise have said on this topic.

If his girlfie knows about diamond clarity grades then OK la, can go for the IF grade. But if she is those "the bigger the better" type, then it is advisable to go for carat weight. Cuz at the end of the day, it is what that makes her happy.

Just my opinion bro.

Actually, from a purely value for money perspective, it does make sense to take an IF for $100 over a <0.1 carat size upgrade. Going up one grade in clarity is usually a price increase of 10%, so you kinda get more bang for your buck going for the IF upgrade.

I'm a supporter for the Octagon. If you like the shape and they have the specs you want, just go for it. Back then they their Octagon selection was quite limited so I had to wait for one in my requirement to come in.

The arrow patternings are very clear and sharp. Its like a firey meteor rock :flash: We had friends and strangers commenting on it. Sometimes, I think I like the diamond more than my fiancée. haha

This is mine, not sure how big is yours, mine is a 0.5ct.

Very nice ring bro! You're right about their stocks. The Octagon that I was looking at was sold already. Now I need to adjust my specs and see what else they have. I dropped you a PM. Have some qns about your ring :)

As long as the buyer is happy to part with his money,
The receiver is happy with the gifts (specs or not).

That will be a good and value purchase.
After all, our (direct) happiness is not the most important criteria in this purchase.

I believe the heart shape survived the test of time as a symbol of love and romance. This simple shape was around since God knows when haha.

Sometimes I wonder why people rarely consider a heart shape engagement ring. Maybe because it is not as sparkly as a round brilliant...?

Lets look at it this way, when you're a teenager, you always draw love shapes or fold hearts etc...but you hardly see that in people who are in their 30s.

Same goes for clothing, i'm sure you dont see any mature women wearing tees filled with heart shaped design.

It's just not as elegant and appropriate when you're older.

Agree. From a lady's pov, i would choose brellia over heart shape diamond as it is very unique and everlasting. Or maybe it's a ploy to change to another cut after 5 years plus can upgrade at the same time. Hoho.

Hey!

I'm no diamond expert or anything, but just wanted to share my two cents worth as I just proposed to my girlfriend a couple of months back.

I did tons of research like what you're doing, but eventually settled on a heart shaped diamond for my SO. I got it online at JamesAllen.com, with which I felt that value I purchased it at was reasonable and justifiable.

Whilst browsing through the heart shaped diamonds, I realized and was advised that for 'fancier cuts', the look of the diamond was of utmost importance. Yes, clarity and all play a part as well - but something of a decent cut and clarity would suffice.

I was deciding between 2 heart shaped diamonds, where:

Diamond A - better in terms of grade, clarity, etc; but had a 'not-so-perfect' heart shape.
Diamond B - lousier in terms of grade, clarity etc; but had the (IMO) 'cutest' and very comic like heart shape.

Both diamonds were similar in terms of cost.

Eventually, I went the 'cute-sy' like heart shape diamond even though it was technically 'lousier' in its other metrics. I guess shape wise, it was sort of a representation of what I always have thought and will think of my SO is to me. Like you mentioned, a heart shape is a timeless symbol of love and romance. And that was what it meant to both my SO and me.

Fast forward to when I've gotten the ring and proposed - My SO loves it, I love it on her, and I feel that I made a great choice in picking a heart shaped one over the 'norm'.

Its a unique coupon code i got off another website, unfortunately the promotion has ended already. I tried looking at the diamond during afternoon in sunlight and it does not show any blue hint and when i put it under UV it shows a nice light blue colour. I do wish my diamond has a very slight blue under sunlight though as my FW loves the colour light blue:s13:

Will try to upload a picture under sunlight and UV later when i have time.

Here are the images for my medium blue f colour diamond under 5pm sunlight. Did'nt really see any blue tint under the naked eye, barely manage to see a little from the phone's camera.

btw for those looking to buy from Blue Nile, I noticed that the author of beyond4cs commented on one of the articles I posted that he had some coupon codes to give away to readers. Can't find the exact page now though, but I do recall seeing it somewhere. He also provides readers with free (yes free) assistance in selecting good diamonds online, and is a local Singaporean. No affiliation but for those who want to venture into buying diamonds online, might want to drop him a message and see if he can give a helping hand!

He's probably more qualified to give legit advice than us quacks here since he does have actual GIA qualifications :s13:

Thats a really nice stone and setting. The kind of setting with decreasing band width as it reaches the stone is something I like because it makes the stone look 0.2-0.3ct bigger. When I show my 0.7ct, people say look like 1.0ct.

Also, the color quite white, is it a D/E ? Bling looks good too. Care to share the GIA cert ?

Its a 0.51 F VVS2 AGS cert. It does look very white. If I didn't know, I would think its a D color too. As long as the light return is good, I believe the diamond will look brighter/whiter already. That's why I didn't emphasize too much on the color.

Good luck! What I suggest is for you to chope the diamond spec you want with a deposit. If you havent craft your ring yet, they will allow you to change your mind. Replied your pm.
