Can we go DMZ ourselves? Or have to follow the local DMZ tours. I see 4 tour groups running DMZ tours from seoul's travel site

you cannot go DMZ by yourself, must be in the tour. tour guides are more experienced and know where and what to do and not to do.

What are the differences between the various tour packages? I intend to go for a full-day tour that includes everything, i.e. the Joint Security Area and the 3rd infiltration tunnel?

We plan on going on the 8 day tour package to Korea by Hong Thai.

We don't speak Mandarin though. Do you think we can still get around considering the tour is conducted in Mandarin?

They've said a local tour leader will be joining if there are more than 20 paxs :(

What's the point of joining a tour group if u don't understand their language?
You'll be much better of on ur own.

Just my 2cents..

Thanks Sharkenstein.

We can't seem to find any tours that are conducted in English and as comprehensive as the ones these larger companies offer.

Thinking of the free and easy tours but I hear it is difficult to get around.

Any suggestions would be great :)

Thanks!

joined their 8 days tour in mar 2012.
overall quite good experience even though it was my first group tour.
korean guide was also pretty steady, and can speak chinese, english too.

but as others might have mentioned before...group tours tend to be very much touch and go for tourist attractions. not so much of street shopping etc. although i was pleasantly surprised my group had quite a long duration for edae shopping street.

tour guide usually is from China for those chinese speaking tours, they juz talk abt some history in bus, which most Singaporean will be sleeping.

Lol :s13:

We not interested in the history either. Just need basic info like meeting places and times.

If anyone has recently been on the Hong Thai tour, please help! :)

Tour tour tour

Hello everyone!

I will be going to S.Korea with my mom on the 13th Feb to 19th Feb, we booked just the plane tickets, somehow I didn't consider into booking with a tour agency initially.

Now I am thinking it would be inconvenient travelling around without the ability to speak any korean (other than come-some-hah-me-da).. I contact a couple of travel agencies if they have any tours happening around the days I am there but seems like no one likes to travel during that period.

I am just trying my luck here to see if anybody is travelling at the same period and want to travel together? Maybe not entirely but some days would be good..

haha, that's almost the same duration as mine.
i will reach on the 12th night and leave on the 20th early morning flight at about 1am.

bringing my dad and mom too.

don't worry about the language barrier. really.
despite my little knowledge of the language, the times i've been there haven't really needed me to rely on korean for surviving as a tourist. the times i used the language there were not travelling related.

the streets are filled with romanized korean, so if you can read english, you shouldn't have to worry about getting directions with a map.

as for worrying about buying stuff and ordering food. the international "hand signals" work fine too, and works best with fingers pointing to other people's food or pictures in menu LOL. nowadays they have more chinese staff and at least enough english to tell you the prices.

so unless you are travelling out of town, if not. nothing to worry.
