Wow, that bad? I'm actually considering buying that same pair. Been wearing Dr Martens, but the leather always cracks at the small toe area. Thus, thinking if Red Wings would be a similar pain in the ass to break in....

RW not really. Can be 1-2 months depending on the frequency of wear. Had my 8111 for months now and it feels super soft and comfy. :o

FYI: most low end Dr Marts are made of synthetic leather.

Actually Red Wing own products aren't ex ex, why don't use their care products? I quite regret using other brands on my Red Wing, which the staff claim that they did not provided the protection and care needed... :(

http://www.hosoonlee.com.sg/products/leather-care/

just get obenauf locally
way better than red wing care product since red wing contain mink oil which i dont prefer

Red Wing also have leather cream de leh.

Important is knowing what you want. Do visit the Red Wing shop at the OGW and talk to the staff. They are very friendly to discuss with you to know what products to recommend you. So far I never got any hardselling from them.

Buy which one?

i got the heavy duty LP, they said it better but future i will get the leather oil since it easier to apply in liquid form comparing to heavy duty in soft wax form.
you can google and read more about obenauf and reviews

plenty of info online just google and read them.
put it simple, if there other product out there better than those containing mink oil at similar prices. why bother with those with mink oil?
i prefer those with beeswax.

got the Fiebing saddle soap recently because molding problem with leather boots.
really good stuff for cleaning up leather.
if your leather boots or leather stuffs having molding issues, this can clean and wash them helps to stop prevent the mold problem.
i got 1 pair or red wing always have this molding issue no matter how i clean it, after cleaning with the saddle soap after 2wks so far ok no more mold coming back.
get the big tin 12oz/340g, more value for money and can last quite sometime.
and for our spore high humidity weather, after the saddle soap wash and dry just apply a light lay of leather oil is good enough, dont over do it put plenty.

I had 2 pairs of Red Wing for 7yrs le, never saw any mold so far touchwood...
Actually I only just brush clean nia, slap on some mink oil if it feels dry. Yes I know mink oil isn't good, but it does help to give it some more lifespan for a while

for leather stuffs if you wear use them regularly then no issue
the problem is i got more than 10 pairs of red wing excluded my other boots so molding will be issue but out of all only the 877 got the worst molding problem. maybe is because of the Oro Legacy leather finish, it is more greasy oily than the rest
the rest of my boots like white's and wesco the leather stacked heel area easily get molding too.
