Any idea what settings to tweak if I keep hearing my own echo while talking to others over the phone?

Try updating your phone? Or check the notification section... did you allow notification for Whatsapp? There are two places to look at... the general notification part and the app itself...

Back up all your data and do factory reset.
If problem persists, bring to service centre.

The APN of your redmi 8 must be set to TPG

For voice call must key in this code to enable

Update to the latest version and see if it solves your problem.

Don't think the latest Android security patch could solve a fundamental, critical issue such as network connectivity issues.
Sigh ....
From Redmi 1 up till now the Redmi 8, yet still have so much user complaints.
No wonder can only give one year local warranty when others are having two years.
Yet the device is no longer attractively priced against the competition.
Have been wanting to order a Xiaomi phone for a long, long time .... but the users here are giving me second thoughts about it. Sigh .....

Which manufacture have 2 years warranty? on their budget series? Last i rmb is only Huawei due to getting confidence from buyer over the ban issue

Try ensure "autostart" is on for all the messaging apps or anything with important notification.

Undoubtedly some may have faulty units. My mum's Redmi 8 has both SingTel prepaid and TPG SIM in it, no major network issues. The Redmi 6A before that had the same two SIMs in with no issue too. I have been using Xiaomi since 2014, Redmi Note 4G, Mi 5, Mi A2 and now my Pocophone F1 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. No major issues with all, closest was diagnosed motherboard issue with my OOW Mi 5, other than that mostly just software bugs that were later fixed with updates. I do agree that the prices are no longer as competitive especially the physical stores, better luck with online stores.
