30mins worth of testing on the Samsung EDGE at AMK HUB.
It does feel weird with the cord attached to the phone. Request the staff to have the cord removed. But was handed over with his own demo unit.
Without the cord, it was awesome. Samsung did give in a thought about the edge screen by implementing the palm recognition. Under normal circumstances, when using the phone for typing using a single hand will not be able to activate the edge screens. Only fingers are allowed to activate the side shortcuts and other stuffs in it.
The toolbox panel is kinda handy, considering that they have a few things to be used.
Other panels, do seems easier to access on the edge such as shortcuts to SMS, Calender, SNote, Calculator and so on. Samsung did a relocation of all the shortcuts to be slightly above so that users could use a thumb to access it easier at the side. This is where the EDGE shines. Accessing tons of shortcuts at the side of the phone using your thumb.
The interesting thing about the panels is that, even with palm are resting on the edge, your thumb could press any shortcuts.
The bad, no 3rd party accessories made yet so far. Such as screen protectors, and also 3rd party accessories to make the Sview for the panels.
There is no conventional casing for this phone, as it is not an oblong shape as all the other traditional phones are.
So for those butterfingers, it is best to stay away from this phone as one may easily drop the phone, due to the design, one will experience screen crack easily. The pressure point of the phone will be concentrated on the edges of the phone.
Furthermore there are no casing that will cover all sides.
Screen color do not seems to be as vibrant as the Note 4. Not sure why is it that way.
Everything else is the same as Note 4. But the premium paid for the EDGE, will seems a bit too much for users. Although the shortcuts and panels implemented is way easier to access than any traditional phones.
I have to conclude that, Edge is not for everyone, some may like it, some dont. It could be a love hate relationship. But overall in terms of handling, i do feel that this phone has a different approach. Of cause many will feel weird as this is something new. The reason for feeling weird is because there is a absence of the side groove that suppose to make users "feel" secure to hold it. But in terms of usability of the edge, when holding it on right hands will take some time to get use to it.
There are times when the users requires to type faster, a full size keyboard is highly recommendable and to avoid typos, this phone requires 2 hands to operate. Well of cause 2 hands are still easier to type, and generally slightly faster.
Overall my take is whether does EDGE worth the premium paid? Well yes maybe if you are those type whom love easy access of shortcuts, and would trade anything for an easy access over handling. Also the notifications at the side is extremely useful. You could easily see notifications when the flip case is covered. Without the need of opening the flap nor turning on the phone.
I would say i have been using the note 2 ever since. Note EDGE is something interesting and unique. Would give it a shot.
