I think the general consensus is that the one rear main camera can't adapt to various photography scenarios as well as having multiple cameras (say: macro, ultra-wide & zoom).
Hence they went to 3 rear cameras for the R9 Pro, which as been the trend for modern phones (some having even 4 cameras).

Saw the Valentine Day promotions on https://cocorolife.sg/product-category/mobilephone/mobile-phone/
The 2x Sense 9 bundle with free gifts looks like the best deal.

That said, if the camera limitations in ultrawide & telescope are not a stop stopper, it is a very good phone at that price point.
1) 3.5mm stereo jack
2) MicroSD card slot
3) Good gaming SOC (granted it is 2 generation behind )
4) Good build quality with IP68 rating
5) Wireless charging

I don't think Sony mobile is well known for good point & shoot .
*Edit: I am not sure about Xperia 1 VI but there are common comments about folks having to use Sony's manual mode or even install gcam to get the kind of photos that they want from Xperias. *
You might as well look for Pixel 8 series or a vanilla Pixel 9 (<$1000 & if telephoto lens is not required) .
For me, if I am paying say close to $1000 or more for a phone, I would definitely want telephoto lens.

Autofocus is different from focus speed.
This phone as slow focus speed
Not only that , you cannot even shoot consecutively pics quickly. I'm not even talking about 10fps, there is a distinctive 2 to 3 second lag FOR EACH PIC.

we r talking about point & shoot autofocus on right subject based on scene. i think this needs AI to work properly.

R9 pro camera is more of a photographer's camera rather than relying on AI tricks and extreme processing. If want to use AI to fake cloudy moon become clear moon or take ultra processed nice photos, maybe can consider the vivo x200 pro?

General feedback:

• Size wise: It will be nice if the phone is less wide (this phone is not for folks with small hands)
• Camera: This is subjective, the main camera tend to add more ooph (saturation) to the results.

It does not matter if I disable HDR &/or AI.​

The photos look good on screen but the colors have their saturation boosted, so some may not like it.​

• Performance: The Snapdragon gen 7+ Gen 3 SOC + UFS 4,0 flash makes the phone more responsive than my Sense 8. The higher framerate on the display helps as well.
• Battery life: This can easily last me from 7am to 10pm daily starting at 90% & ending with 20-25% battery.

Vices experienced so far:
1) There seems to be a bug in the ambient light sensor, it tends to make the main screen dimmer than it should , especially outdoors.
2) I had the camera app hang a couple of times when I was overseas (Once while recording video)

Overall, I think this phone was misleadingly marketed for its photography capabilities.
The only thing "Pro" about it is its ability to take photos in RAW format when using manual photography mode.
That said, it is quite a good phone at its current discounted price ($500 or less).
At its original retail price, it is a flop.

To be fair, the R9 front camera is actually pretty good for selfies. The AF for it works well.
Some phones (even some flagships) skimp on this).
But macro from the rear cameras are not good (I tried to focus manually as well).
I am not a pro, it could be that it requires manual mode with manual adjustments for good results.
Perhaps Sharp needs to add a macro mode for normal users.
