if simba is using the same netlink fibre as other ISPs, why is there is need to do trial ?

Maybe because outage during trial no need to pay any fine.

Even if they duplicate the backend servers from their experience in running the mobile business, the fibre business is totally different in terms of data consumption. Their equipment must be able to handle the increased volume, from the sample trial size, they probably have a better gauge of the resources they need, especially how much overseas traffic capacity.

And also remember, the requirement is to be able to set up the ONT yourself rather than someone from the ISP coming down. So at 20 dollars and with a locked up of 12 months, and Netlink charging 13.80 per month for each connection, their margin will be only 6 dollars. Maybe it is also to find out how can they do away with sending people down for the setup because earning 60 dollars over 12 months cannot cover sending people down for free. That 12 months locked up, I read from one of their FB response when someone asked about that.

ONT normally is plug and play right? The rest of the config is backend?

then why other new ISPs dont have to do such trials ?

may be simba is using other means to bypass netlink? something new in sg thus need a few months' trial.

Never played with ONT before. But YouTube has some videos on people configuring their ONT which is quite similar to configuring a router.

In the past, it was usually the ISP that sent people down with the ONT and helped set up the router at the same time. Many things could go wrong, e,g the ONT may not like the router etc...... So in the trial, they probably will keep track on which model of routers have been used and without problem.

I don't think it is possible, Netlink monopolised the optic fibre network in Singapore. Their rates are regulated by the govt/IMDA. The cost of building another network is too high and you cannot just build a new network without approval.

Other ISPs have already been on the market for a very long time, I don't remember whether they got any trial or not. You can go do some research on those newer ISPs (WhizzComm, MyRepublic) and Google search to see whether during their launch, did they offer any trial.

Right now, for MyRepublic 10Gbps plan, it is actually on trial. If MyRepublic say their 10Gbps needs regulatory approvals, not sure if Simba's 2.5Gbps requires any approvals and if yes, have they already secured such approvals?

This time they are smart not to offer free trial.

Last time for TPG Mobile they did offer free trial but I am not so sure how many trial users really became paid customers --- I cancel mine once they started to charge.

I think it is more like they are smart to lock people in at this early stage. Must pay 3 months upfront, another 3 months deposit (can be utilised after the 12th month), followed by NLT charges and the ONT device which they offset with mobile credit. The upfront cost is $113.

The only thing they subsidise is the ONT which they offset with mobile credit. But even for the ONT, the true cost is likely to be much lower than $80.

Good thing -- they mention ONT and not ONR.

So you can use your own router -- those wth dual 2.5G ports should be a good choice, like Asus GT-AX6000 and TUF-AX6000.
Any entry level routers that would have at least 2.5g ports?

I would not call routers with 2.5G port as entry level but rather they belong to mid-range and high-range router. The following are some options (S$200 to S$500)

Option 1 -- wireless router with single 2.5G port, this is suitable for use case where your clients are either wireless or using Gigabit Ethernet.

Asus TUF-AX4200 (recommended), at around S$224.1 from Challenger
Asus RT-AX86U
Asus RT-AX86U Pro
TP-Link Archer AX55 Pro
TP-Link Archer AX72 Pro
TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro (low cost WiFi 6E, triband), at around S$529 for 2-pack.
TP-Link Archer AX6000 (older model)
TP-Link Archer AX11000 (older model)

Option 2 -- wireless router with dual 2.5G ports, one for WAN and one for LAN. Thiis is important if you have 2.5G wired clients like laptop/desktop/NSA. You can also add 2.5G switch to have multiple 2.5G Wire clients.

Asus TUF-AX6000 (recommended), at around S$323.1 from Challenger. The China model TX-AX6000 is a very good buy if you do not mind local warranty (RMB799 plus shipment and tax)
Asus GT-AX6000 (recommended), at around S$450 to S$480 BNIB from Carousell.

I wonder will their $80 ONT comes with a 10G port or only 2.5G. Since so many ISPs are introducing 10G plans, they might as well future-proof the ONT with a 10G port in case they also want to sell a 10G plan.

Any one can advise if I could recycle the ont from my previous expired starhub or m1 broadband?

Are ont generic or customised to each telco?

At that cost, I am pretty sure it will not have 10G port.

Two possibilities:
1) GPON ONT with single active 2.5G port (it could be a GPON ONR which is configured to be an ONT, the other 1G ports are inactive), 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244 Gbps upstream

2) XGS-PON ONT with single active 2.5G port, 2.5G downsteam and upstream.
