Imho i think ISP will offer only 1G, 2.5G and 10G in the future.

Time to eliminate the 1+1G crap

I tend to think you are likely to be correct.

On the other hand, if comparing M1/Starhub 2Gbps plan versus the current SIMBA 2.5Gbps plan, I will for sure go to M1/Starhub 2Gbps plan (dual 1Gbps plan) if the price goes down to S$30.

I still think there is a chance for dual 2.5G plan versus 10G plan. 10G plan requires higher end setup from the PC side, especially for laptops. Both will require high end router and ONT though. So it may not happen.

I would not call routers with 2.5G port as entry level but rather they belong to mid-range and high-range router. The following are some options (S$200 to S$500)

Option 1 -- wireless router with single 2.5G port, this is suitable for use case where your clients are either wireless or using Gigabit Ethernet.

Asus TUF-AX4200 (recommended), at around S$224.1 from Challenger
Asus RT-AX86U
Asus RT-AX86U Pro
TP-Link Archer AX55 Pro
TP-Link Archer AX72 Pro
TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro (low cost WiFi 6E, triband), at around S$529 for 2-pack.
TP-Link Archer AX6000 (older model)
TP-Link Archer AX11000 (older model)

Option 2 -- wireless router with dual 2.5G ports, one for WAN and one for LAN. Thiis is important if you have 2.5G wired clients like laptop/desktop/NSA. You can also add 2.5G switch to have multiple 2.5G Wire clients.

Asus TUF-AX6000 (recommended), at around S$323.1 from Challenger. The China model TX-AX6000 is a very good buy if you do not mind local warranty (RMB799 plus shipment and tax)
Asus GT-AX6000 (recommended), at around S$450 to S$480 BNIB from Carousell.

There are other options as well, especially if you do not mind local warantty.

For example, there will be some low cost "China version WiFi 7" routers, with support of MLO/MRU/4096-QAM, but NO 6GHZ support, NO 320MHz channel bandwidth support.

Huawei BE3 Pro (single 2.5G port version): RMB499

Xiaomi 6500 Pro (quad 2.5G ports, good for 2.5G plans): RMB699
Xiaomi 7000 (quad 2.5G ports, good match for 2.5G plans): RMB799

TL-7DR5130 BE5100, RMB 369 (single 2.5G port)
TL-7DR6560 BE6500 (quad 2.5G ports, good match for 2.5G plans), listed price RMB 729, initial batch maybe lower

If you want to be ready for future 10G plans, there are a few options as well.
Xiaomi 10000 triband (dual 10G ports, maybe good for 10G plans): RMB1499
TP-Link TL-7TR13090 BE13000 triband (dual 10G ports, maybe good for 10G plans)

With the launch of SIMBA 2.5Gbps plan, both 1Gbps plan and 2Gbps/dual 1Gbps plans will start to lower the price. Kudos to SIMBA.

2.5G plan may well be the future main stream plan with more desktop/laptops equips with 2.5G port.

1Gbps plan will become the replacement of 500Mbps plan down the road.

I do not think 10Gbps plan will be the main stream any time soon as the 10G gears are still expensive. This is especially true for laptop to add 10G Ethernet adapters (only expensive Thunderbolt 3 adapters available now, no USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Gen 2x2 adapters available). 10G switches are also expensive.

Currently --> 500Mbps (base) -- 1Gbps (main stream) -- 1+1 Gbps (niche offering) -- 10Gbps (high end, few users)
Future --> 1Gbps (base) -- 2.5Gbps (main stream) -- 10Gbps (high end, a bit more users comapred to now).

10Gbps --> S$60 to S$80 with 10G capable router bundle, S$40 to S$50 without router bundle
2.5Gbps plan --> S$20 (SIMBA) to S$30 without router bundle, S$40 to S$50 with 2.5G capable router bundle
1Gbps plan --> S$20 to S$30 without or with basic router bundle

I am not so sure how long 1+1 plans or 2Gbps plan will survive if 2.5Gbps plan becomes the main stream. I am not sure if any ISPs will come out dual 2.5G plan as a niche offering, or maybe 5Gbps plan.

XGS-PON ONT/ONR will support 1G/2.5G/5G/10G plans.

Just to share, I just signed up for a 2Gbps(1Gbps+1gbps) M1 plan at Compass One.

Got an unpublished offer only available to new signups at this specific outlet till end of this year. Can’t share the exact pricing details as per requested by the CSO at the outlet but for those interested can go down to the outlet to enquire.

what I got:
Asus ROG AX6000
TP Link AX5400

It’s almost near the same price if I had taken their $36.50 1Gbps plan + Asus AX6000 top up upgrade.

Yes the other option for power users who want to explore pfSense/OPNsense/OpenWRT/etc is to get low power mini PCs which have dual or quad (or more) 2.5G ports (Intel I226 NICs preferred).

Reference: Intel N100 based mini PC is popular choice (N95/N100/N200/N305 are all okay).

i hope so too. consumers will be able to utilise the full capability of the "pipe".

by that time too, I expect 2.5G LAN equipment prices to come down too.

Does Netlink have the network capacity for everyone to move to 10Gbps? The optic fibre network was build before or around 2010 when the average plans were only 100Mbps.

To put into perspective how much 10Gbps is, some data centres only have 100Gbps bandwidth while the better ones have 400Gbps. It is highly likely that for non-commercial users, the bandwidth for downloading will be curtailed, or else if 10 to 20 residential users start demanding 10Gbps download capacity, the data centres will be jammed up. So, my guess is, that 10Gbps for non-commercial users is something which most people cannot fully exploit, at best it serves to facilitate multiple 1 or 2 Gbps downloads by different users from different locations.

SIMBA uses CGNAT and has no IPv6 for fibre services currently.

Thanks. I would still like to get a report from a real user.

I do not consiser the above OCworkbench article to be a very reliable source myself as it does not quote a test result. They have a prior report below which shows they have not carried out test by themselves and they also did not know whether IPv6 is there or not.

While SIMBA is cheap, I need Home Digital Voice. Mum always uses landline to call, and talks for hours. Hope they would bundle it or provide a cheap add-on. Else, would never switch.

Same as the latest promo letter i received with this additional wording:
"We'll lock in this exclusive ALL-IN plan at this price, so you can continue to enjoy this promotional rate, even after the 24-month contract." Signup by 22 Dec 2023.

Tempted to recon but i think i shall pass for now. They send mailers every 2-mths, i'll wait for the next one. haha

Simba mobile has free unlimited outgoing calls to local mobile, if your mum is on the 5-dollar senior plan, she can talk for as long as she wants by calling her friend/relative mobile.
