actually no one is being forced to take up 10gbps plan.those on lower speeds also benefit as prices have come down

1. Good point. Competition is good (and the ISP market is not yet in over-competition now, unlike the SIM only mobile market). The exception is probably SIMBA 2.5Gbps plan.

2. Cost reduction and newly cost-effective plans -- I expect 5Gbps plan price to come down as well (or bundled with better router).

WC 2.5Gbps plan -- S$21.80 per month

M1 1Gbps plan -- reduced to S$36.84 per month.

Starhub/M1 -- reduced 2Gbps plan (dual 1Gbps plan) to S$39 per month

Starhub -- comes with 5Gbps plan at S$45 per month (with 10G capable Nokia all-in-one ONR with wireless AX6000 by default, but you can request to have ONT option and then use your own router)

VQ -- comes out reasonably priced 3Gbps/5Gbps plan (effective price is 34.98 per month for no-frills 3Gbps plan, S$46.99 per month for 5Gbps no frills plan).

Singtel -- reduced 2Gbps plan to S$42.90 per month for new users (new home offer is at S$39.9 per month). Recontract users can also get similar pricing (my recontract offer was S$39.95 per month for 2Gbps and S$42.90 for 2.5Gbps, but I am not interested in Singtel 2Gbps/2.5Gbps offer due to the use of ONR).

Singtel -- comes out with 5Gbps plan at S$49 per month for new users (with 10G capable XGS-PON ONR plus basic wireless router which is only capable with 1Gbps)

3. More info about Singapore ISP comparison (just need to read Post #1/2/3)

The push is to solve the chicken and egg issue, if there is no infrastructure, the business will not develop application to utilize this, subsidizing the business usually lead to nothing so going through the consumer is a better shot at the problem.
Some of the upcoming usecase are very beneficial for an aging population, imagine old people who need medical care, instead of running a large fleet of vehicle to ship them to hospital, they can run diagnostic remotely with the help of some local physical support by volunteers or medical staff nearby.
Moving towards a work from home nation would require big bandwidth that allow anyone to work remotely as if they are at home in theory.
VR with remote GPU is also only possible with fat pipes like this.
Hello, i understand business will benefit, but i am asking how families will benefit?

A few examples -- quite niche as of now. That is why I say majority of the users who go with 5Gbps/10Gbps plan not because of the needs, but rather because of other reasons (content bundling, cost, like to try new things).
1) people who do video editing and share with collaborators for editing
2) people who download huge games from Steam or other fast sites
3) people who do off-site backup of home network files
4) people who host some sites at home (eg: Linux mirrors)

Yes these are niche which does not constitutes to 50% of families using them even today, all these can be accomplished with 1gbps bw. So i am not convinced yet.

End of the day, if the 10Gbps plan can get me 2.5Gbps now, and it's cheaper than my 1Gbps plan, then might as well try.

Not to convince you. But the Government (as well as the experts) does acknowledge that there are no many use cases now and it is more to prepare for the future.

Please watch the video posted in this page and relevant news report.

Exactly.

That being said, I still do not recommend SIMBA 2.5Gbps/10Gbps as the main ISP to go now, not because of the speed, but rather because of the unproven stability.

If you want to try it as a secondary ISP, by all means go ahead.

Our government have longer foresight for future.
Building bicycle path before bicycles can ride on it.

Everyone must be thankful.

Compare Singapore with UK and US ...

Our internet speed is really blazing fast and cheap.
The higher the speed, the cheaper the minimum speed we will get.

That is precisely what they want. they want us to take up the 10gbps plan at 1gbps price in 4 years time.

i just signed up Simba BB plan. Residence home is at North East. Current ISP is myrepublic.

Understand that I need to return existing equipment back to myrepublic. I suppose Simba will provide new equipment to me. I opt out for installation service.

Yeah, they're just "normalising" the low prices for consumers in their markets. Vote for whichever party that convinces simba boss to open supermarket

I'm using google routers, hope its compatible.

Since it is using ONT, it should work.

It is just that your Google router (either Google Nest or Google WiFi) will only support 1Gbps as it has only 1Gbps WAN. This is fine and you can always upgrade later.

What happen if I am invited for the 10Gbps pilot trial but I still use back the 1Gbps router? Will Simba scold me that I cant do testing for them cos I not using 10Gbps router?

Anyway, $300 for 360 days = $25 for 12 mths, much cheaper than m1 cheapest plan of 500mbps
They will only test the internet connection coming out of the ONT.

If you using 1gbps wifi router then they wont care. They will just tell you your speed is capped at 1gbps.
