im sure got people sign up for the 2.5g plan previously just because its $20. and those people might even still using their 1g router. dont know how they feel now since the price is increased to $29.90.

i feel that right now 10g router and network card is too ex already. 2.5g is the way to go, most new gen motherboard already comes with 2.5g port or able to install wifi6e/7 card, so only need to upgrade the router. i not even sure if wireless can even handle 10g.
From consumer POV, Simba 10Gbps is what the other ISP had been charging for 500Mbps. So why not upgrade if currently using other ISP even with only a 1Gbps router? I am considering Simba since my MR 1Gbps contract will finish in Dec this year. I have no problem with using it at 2.5Gbps only, it's still cheaper than what i am paying MR now.

And i guess that's part of Simba's strategy too, not all subscribers have 10Gbps hardware, the majority will still be 1Gbps, thus their uplink may not even need to be upgraded to keep the price lower than other ISP.

At the end of the day, this has forced other ISP to try to match Simba's price. We still benefit from it.

I believe the existing users will continue to enjoy the S$21.80 per month pricing within their 12 months contract.

I am not on board for 10 gbps, and marketing did not get me. It is just that I understand why it is neccessary to do it. The reason why people cannot maximize their 10 gbps is the lack of local application, currently it is probably the Geforce now that really can push it. If you connect to office that have local end point, that will help too but majority of the people is consuming overseas content that have contention but even with that ISP normally weight in your favour if you are on the higher speed plan, so as more people get on, speed for the rest of the people will degrade until they buy more bandwidth, which may or may not happen.
Maybe GeForce now ads made you think that it's something high end or futuristic. Last time I checked it only has gtx10 series graphics and 1080p 60fps streaming. It'll probably use 50Mbps. I found a review for you to understand your example: https://www.reddit.com/r/GeForceNOW/s/aPeC85wXv9

Simba 2.5Gbps is GPON, asymmetric.
while its 10Gbps is XGSPON, symmetric.

Meaning as long ur hardware are compatible, is a no brainer to upgrade?

Yes, that is correct, if you are comparing SIMBA 2.5Gbps vs SIMBA 10Gbps, now that they are of the same price, provided that SIMBA 10Gbps service is available in your area.

You can even use the 10Gbps plan as 2.5Gbps plan if you have only 2.5G capable router now. You can always upgrade later.

Main problem is that 10Gbps is only available in selected area.

The other main problem is that SIMBA 10Gbps (or even 2.5Gbps) is not proven to be stable. Think twice if you want to use it as the only ISP as there is a risk associated. If you have another ISP and just want to try SIMBA, by all means go ahead. Or if you are fine to use a 4G/5G mobile data connection as the backup in case SIMBA is down...

At the end of the day, this has forced other ISP to try to match Simba's price. We still benefit from it.

Their backend will be upgraded, as part of the government subsidy. It is just that it may take time. Now most important thing is stability. If it is stable, then even if SIMBA 10Gbps speed drops to 3Gbps during peak time, it is still cheaper than VQ 3Gbps/5Gbps or Singtel/Starhub 5Gbps plan. I tend to think SIMBA can improve the stability and speed along the way. Take note right now SH/MR 10Gbps plan also suffers peak time speed drop issues.

So yes, I agree that competition is good (not over competition like the current SIM Only market or the Open Electriticy Market during the initial phase). SIMBA and Whizcomms surely shake the market with the S$21.80 per month 2.5Gbps plan. SIMBA 10Gbps plan at S$29.90 per month for sure will contribute to the lower cost of the 5Gbps/10Gbps plan as well.

The other ISPs may have their basic 5Gbps down to S$40 level in the near future (say in 2025). Then the basic 10Gbps plan will go down to S$50 per month in 2025/2026 and later go down to S$40 per month level in 2027/2028 when the government is targeting 50% househod to have 10Gbps plan in 2028.

I believe the existing users will continue to enjoy the S$21.80 per month pricing within their 12 months contract.

of course, no choice mah
We paid $112.27 for the ONT charge & NLT setup fees.
12 mths / $31.16 mthly
24 mths / $26.48
36 mths / $24.92

Used to pay $30.18 mthly M1 500mbps
SIMBA 2.5gb range 700mbps - 1Gbps (86U router)

Have to stick to the $21.80mthly fees for at least 36 mths for < avg $25 mthly.

can’t find the original 2.5gbps T&C.
Wonder whether they can raise the price of $21.80 to $29.90 after 1yr.

cos unlike the current t&c of 2.5gbps we paid $112.27 for the ONT & NLT fees.

even if we paid $21.80 if force to upgrade to $29.90.
The earlier adopters or supporters will lose out.
+ setup fees our cost is ard $31.16mthly with gst, compare to current 2.5/10Gbps $29.90 (include gst, no setup fees)

Edit: No reason for early adopter to upgrade to $29.90. You will be paying extra (cos of the original setup/NLT fees) on top of the $29.90.

right now im still siting on out of contract phased out starhub 500mbps at 29.90. starhub never upgrade my plan.

previously want to get the simba 2.5g at 20 even with the ont nlt fee, but not available in my area yet.
now simba 10g 29.90 waiving the ont nlt fee and ndp promo makes me very tempted to switch over.
would still really prefer the 2.5g at 20 with fee, or 25 without fee.

whizzcoms 1 is no go as it is true 2.5g.

very unsure when any of the 3 telecos will make a move, since starhub dont even bother to upgrade my 500mpbs plan. also not sure y simba dont keep the 2.5g at the lower price.

When will M1 500mbps drop price to $20 ?
what will be your choice if:
current starhub/m1 500mpbs become $20
simba $20 2.5g with nlt ont fee $112
simba $29.90 10g without nlt ont fee
starhub/m1 totally remove and upgrade 500mpbs to 1g at 25-29.90 or 2.5g at 29.90-35

I will stick with 500mbps if dun have 500mbps, I will take 1gb at 25/30 ..
Just take the minimum .. 2.5gb is overkill.

Most important is latency
High bandwidth does not means latency is good

When will M1 500mbps drop price to $20 ?

Unlikely. More likely is that M1 will get rid of 500Mbps for new users soon. For existing 500Mbps users, either they keep you in the same plan for the same price, or at best they may give free upgrade to 1Gbps at the same price (S$30.45 per month).

For reference, Starhub has got rid of the 500Mbps for new users. But for existing users like I, they keep the same S$30.45 per month pricing for the legacy 500Mbps plan. Back in 2018 or 2019, they gave free upgrade to some 500Mbps users (out of contract) to 1Gbps (but keep the same S$29.90 per month pricing --> with GST increase, it becomes S$30.45 now).

Now Starhub has got rid of the 1Gbps plan as well (except Homehub+ 1Gbps plan), same for Singtel. But now Starhub offers 2Gbps plan at S$39, same for M1 2Gbps plan. Singtel offers 2Gbps plan at either S$39.90/S$39.95 per month or S$42.90 per month, basically the same as the existing 1Gbps plan.

As there is a base charge from NLT at S$13.80 per month (regardless of the plan), it is hard for ISPs to offer S$20 per month plans. WC 2.5Gbps plan at S$21.80 will be lowest cost plan in the forseable future, now that SIMBA has raised the 2.5Gbps plan to be the same as 10Gbps plan at S$29.99 per month (but waive NLT and ONT charges, unlike previous S$21.80 per month 2.5Gbps plan where they have ONT charges and NLT charges).

Likely the case, similar to when they phased out 100Mbps
