55X9000F

Just got delivery of the 55X9000F this afternoon. Been watching 4K videos on Youtube and Netflix.

First impressions are good. Very vibrant, bright and natural colours. Black levels are amazing for LCD technology; close to OLEDs but without the BI/IR/Banding issues. Dark details can be picked out easily.

The Android TV OS is slick. They must have improved the responsiveness/speed. The built in Google Assistant s good. Save me the trouble of typing the name of videos although the voice recognition not as good as Google Home.

Google Home recognises the built in Chromecast in the TV. So Google Home can connect to the TV and play Spotify and Youtube. Unfortunately, doesn't work with Netflix yet. Neither can Google Home turn on/off the TV. Hopefully the functionality with Google Home will improve with future updates.

Connectivity with my bluetooth headphones is really cool and very practical so that I can watch TV without disturbing others. Not sure whether the E series could connect to bluetooth headphones.

Before I decided on this model, I was considering the 55X9000E and the LG C7. But having seen the BI issues for myself, I discounted the LG C7. The E and F series was about S$500 difference. Took the plunge and bought the F series for future upgradibility. Looking forward to the Dolby Vision update soon.

Nice review and good choice
Feed it properly with a 4k player.
If you want DV you better get the Sony x700.
Sony implements a 'lite' version of DV

With Netflix and the dearth and death of Blu Ray shops, is it even worth buying 4K titles on Blu Ray anymore? I thought the future is streaming.....

The picture quality is still inferior and you won't get lossless sound. For the real HT enthusiast, not those using TV speakers or soundbars, that is sufficient reason for me to keep the thousands of discs I have.

I know what you mean...Used to be an audiophile and videophile myself...had tons of Blurays, HDDVD (what a mistake), SACDs, and CDs, mid/top of the range equipment and speakers...But over the years these have been taken over by Spotify for music and Netflix for movies/TV series. The convenience of music and video on demand did it for me..I sacrificed a bit of quality for convenience.

Thankfully, I still have a good 5.1 full size speakers, an up to date Dolby Atmos Receiver and now a good 4K HDR TV. When the upgrade itch come again, no doubt I will consider getting an UHD Player...

Are the soundbars just poor sounding and only looks better? They look modern and takes up less space with research showing they improve the overall TV speakers sound by 15%.

The disc itself is claim to be non environmental friendly. You can see less and less of CD/DVD/blu ray disc available in the market. Less Player too. So these technology is set to go inbthe next few years.

You may still have the discs. Dis may last for 100 years. But the equipment may not. You may find one day that you have media but no player. Just like those VHS and audio tapes I had.

I have a Yamaha Soundbar and Subwoofer at home also. In comparison, with a full 5.1 system the soundbar cannot compete in terms of sound quality and the directionality of the surround system. If audio quality and surround sound is your priority, a 5.1/7.1 system will be much much better. If aesthetics are more important, then the soundbar will be better but with a big hit on audio quality and true surround system.

When I insert the USB thumb drive into the USB slot of the TV, the USB thumb drive has to be in certain format in order to be read or the media to be in certain playable format?

Not say poor sounding.
I guess you have never heard a 5.1 setup before?
Soundbar the speaker are all squeeze together in one bar.
If you want wider, more fuller surround effect 5.1 setup
would be better.

Not to mention directional audio like people walking past you
can hear it as if you are there.
Soundbar is difficult especially with those 2.1 speaker design one.

They just create a virtual surround so directional audio can be
not accurate and hard to hear.
Not to mention AVR tend more wattage, power per channel (From 100 watts)
thus the sound is even more powerful and punchier
than soundbar.

For a movie lover like myself who play Blu ray disc, soundbar doesn't suit me.
I have a soundbar setup but that is used for gaming.
My 4K Setup is with a Onkyo 5.1 $699 so far so good.

For best sound, your source is important.
Blu ray still win hands down, Netflix and etc. doesn't appeal
to me as they are using Dolby D or DTS which are compressed
formats.

Blu ray have either DTS Master Audio/X, Dobly TrueHD/Atmos
loseless surround sound format.
Can feel as if you are at Cinema.
Currently use a cheap 5.1 first later than upgrade to Dolby atmos
setup as need to do cabling and mounting which sought of blow my budget.

Thanks for sharing. I have an old school 5.1 system but must wire up.....ha ha ha.

Looks like the modern 2.1 sound bar isn’t the improvement for tv sound that appeals to me.

If you want best surround experience than yes a 5.1 setup will be ideal
but you need to deal with cabling.
That is why these days most opt for soundbar, easier.

Cheapest 5.1 is the Onkyo HTS-3800.

Well, technology made the different. Close enough especially if you have limited space and do not have the capacity to wire up the surround speaker to the back of the room. Sound bar become a easy choice.
