Weird that Giga isn't allowing those on the cheaper $10 plan to upgrade to the $18 pop up plan as well? Got money don't wanna make?

For sharing. If you need to receive OTP or Transaction alert SMS when overseas. No need activate anything or pay anything to be able to receive SMS when overseas. from Giga FAQ:

Do you offer roaming calls and SMS packs?
We do not offer roaming calls and SMS packs. Only roaming data services is allowed on the giga plan. Good News! You'll be able to receive incoming SMS for free not just in our 48 supported roaming destinations, but in more than 230 destinations!

Can I make and receive calls and SMSes when I'm roaming overseas?

Did you (or anyone) actually got real experience on receiving SMS OTP at overseas?
Because logically if your phone does not connected to any local network, I just wonder how SMS can be receive?
Maybe I am wrong but just a thought.

I just ported my TPG number to giga and can't receive OTP. Newly ported number must wait how long to be able to receive OTP?

Oohhh gosh, this is bad.
I just got my new SIM yesterday but not yet port to my own number
Maybe they need a few days to do the porting.
Please post message on the progress, THX

I received the OTP via sms from DBS when I was in Munich even though I was not connected to a local network there. I received the OTP for the 2 times I was in Munich for two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019.

Thanks for the reply.

I just managed to live chat with Giga agent who said "in order to receive OTP overseas. You just need to connect to supporting telco in the country, do not need to buy anything. For IDD call, IDD packs will have to be purchased"

You said not connected to a local network which is rather confusing for me.

I guessed maybe if not auto-connected then we need to manually try to connect with the supported telco.

For manual connection, my next question is what are the local supported telcos for respective countries? But the agent quickily disconnected me. :(

I guess for those existing customers who really want to sign the 40GB for $18 plan, will have to sign up for a new line, seeking to port in later. At least it will be worth it in the long run.

I'm not doing so though, cos I really dun need so much data... so I will be sticking to the $10 plan. :o

Phone will be connected to local network I think. Just dun have talktime or outgoing SMS.

When I overseas with singtel, no roaming but phone will still be on local network, can receive sms, I think I do mobile banking and get transaction alert sms.
And maybe 1 more year before we can travel. But that time, maybe more connections with overseas telcos.

Cant wait to join for $18 a month. Need more talktime just $1 for 100min: cheaper than coin phone

porting is quite fast and seamless... I submitted request for porting on 20Aug afternoon, same day evening midnight ported over liaoz...

what I suggest u sign up a new number and activate a few days earlier so u can try out and assess if the reception and connectivity ok for you then on the next day after your current telco contract expire, to request for port in

edit: just saw that yours is GOMO, so no contract expiry... so u can request the port over earlier... 29 Aug is sat... maybe best to submit request earlier on weekday on 27 Aug

if u need a referral code, pm me.

cheers!

Someone in previous reply mentions he activated his card after 2 months of delivery.

But according to their FAQ, they reserve the rights to clawback the number if you do not active within 30 days.

Their FAQ:

When do I need to activate my SIM card by?

Hi hi! It is recommended that you activate the SIM card within 30 days to avoid a possibility of a service disruption.

Sorry to ask if ask them to port early my existing number mean that i have to pay Aug bill and start the activate right ?? I sign this morning and will be getting my sim card on 29/8/2020, also i don't have any contract. I hoping that my service will start on 1 September with my new giga $18 service so that i would't need to pay for aug bill. Sorry first time getting Sim only plan. Thank :D

i think in your online signup process, you already paid some $18 + $2 delivery fees? so technically yr $18 for 1st month is a sunken cost which already started...

if you sign up requesting for port in of existing non-giga number, then a giga sim card will be delivered to you and I think once u activated the giga sim, the porting request will be initiated... u can read under their FAQ...

"...Here's how the port-in/transfer process works
- When you choose to port-in/transfer your existing number from another telco to giga, a temporary giga number will first be assigned and delivered to you
- Upon delivery of the temporary giga number, your request to port-in will be processed within 1-3 working days
- Once port-in is approved, your temporary giga number will be automatically changed to your existing number from your current telco...."

To be fair to Giga, when they increased the $10 plan from 5GB to 6 GB, they did apply it auto to existing customers. So far this newest pop-up is the only one that cannot apply to existing customers for upgrade. And their offers including pop-ups are for life, not like others first X mths only.

Singtel and Starhub in their latest results both cite tough competition. But if their practice is to treat loyal customers differently and only focus on new ones, don't blame us for jumping ship.

Betrayers get rewarded. This is what telcos do. =p.

Like that one can only receive sms overseas. Cannot make urgent calls if needed. This is why I dun like gomo or giga, both are half-baked service comparing you their parent plans.
