Okay. Back to topic. I just tested the Giga data speed again.

Download speed: 144 Mbps
Upload speed: 50.4 Mbps

Name me a faster 4G LTE (data) connection. I will wait.

You can't keep testing once and then based on that one test, claiming StarHub is superior.

If you use single site comparisons, I can now also proclaim that TPG's 4G LTE is faster than StarHub's 5G, therefore TPG is superior.

(also this is superior to the LTE result you gave)

Just signed up for giga, looking to add the 5g pack. Are their 5g speeds noticeably faster than 4g?

No. StarHub and M1 5G NSA is barely faster than 4G (and slower than 4G+) because they don't have enough spectrum for it (and are using ENDC DSS for 5G NSA). Only SingTel's 5G NSA is good. You can add the 5G pack if it's still free, but if you have to pay $10/mth, don't.

I think we all have a consensus la: TPG upload speed really cannot make it, usually less than 10 Mbps, otherwise less than 20 Mbps, when the other telcos have much higher upload speed.

I think we all have a consensus la: For just $10 TPG give good value for money and good enough speed for our use when the other telcos have much higher price 😊

On a more professional note, thanks for sharing with us the actual situation of the Singapore 5G networks right now. I'm sure those who currently already have 5G phones and are looking for 5G plans would benefit from the information that you have shared, regarding SingTel's 5G NSA network is faster than Starhub and M1's 5G NSA network.

I'm actually a bit concerned, because I have uploaded photos that I have invested a lot of effort producing, onto Instagram, using the TPG data, thinking that TPG 4G+ is very good, and thinking that I am using a very strong data connection to upload the photos onto Instagram.

Just want to ask, regardless of the upload speed, the same amount of data is uploaded onto Instagram eventually, just that the upload time is slower, right?

Hopefully. Anyway, next time I'm probably going to use wifi to upload photos, since wifi is faster than 4G data.

Update: I have checked the Instagram photos that I have uploaded using Singtel data, Changi Mobile data and TPG data. The sizes are about the same, and these are photos that Instagram save onto my phone after the uploading is completed.

Therefore, to answer my own question: no, the upload speed does not affect the upload quality.

Damn. Not gonna pay 45 bucks for the cheapest SIM-only 5G plan with Singtel so I guess it's going to have to be 4G for now.

Nonono. If your device supports SA 5G, go ahead with StarHub or M1. I'm just saying that Giga's 5G is not worth it because it's NSA only.

If your device only supports NSA 5G, then yeah only SingTel 5G is worth it for you.

I agree with this. If you need speed, TPG is not for you, and Giga is good. But if you want a good value plan with generous data, TPG is an excellent choice.

Ah right. I'm using a cheapo A52s 5G which doesn't support SA unfortunately. Guess I will wait till my next phone before switching over to 5G proper :(

Wa thanks for the heads up mann. Was thinking of getting the even cheaper A22 5G. Didn't know that even the more expensive A52 5G cannot accept... eh, NSA I can understand, but standalone, you sure boh?

I need more references from other sources to confirm. Who knows is because the area you are in does not have 5G coverage that's why your A52 5G phone does not receive 5G signal, but actually can receive 5G signal one.

If your 5G is giga (NSA) or Starhub/M1 (standalone and NSA), or circles (NSA), you may want to consider switching to Singtel (standalone and NSA) at the moment to enjoy better 5G coverage.

Perhaps one should read up on difference between 5G NSA and SA.

Am i right broadly thinking for 5G SA, the device needs to support mmwave? Else devices with just sub-6 support will only support NSA? Or is 5G SA support dependant on something else?

Nothing to do with phone's hardware.

Just go check the FAQ 5G Devices page of all 3 Telcos and one will see which devices are compatible with 5G SA of each Telco.

Usually SA validation is done at the chipset/modem level for the telco. My Mi 11 Lite 5G worked out of the box on M1's SA network despite being listed as incompatible, and that's with a custom ROM.

mmWave devices arent common yet.
No point talking about that.

I think device manufacturers don't even want to do that alr, because it's a waste of battery and space.

The technology (SA vs NSA) is separate from the frequency (Sub6 vs mmWave). A device can support any combination of the above, there's no requirement to support mmWave for SA.

Thanks for enlightening! So if SA base station is not Sub6/mmWave depedant, how does Telco/manufacturer determine which devices qualify to connect to SA?

As long as the device is compatible with the network band (eg n78) and the technology (eg SA) it should be able to connect. The devices that "qualify" to connect to SA are those that have been tested by the telco and confirmed to work using that particular firmware.
