Thanks, was looking at router below $150,at the same time i would like it to be future proof? Heard now Asus n56u and n66u quite popular?

you're right. I saw a customer who purchased a N56U router at Cybermind Sim Lim yesterday.
I am personally using a N66U router.

Please don't misunderstand but... Jeffrey, how's an "N" router future proof? You want future proof, you'll need AC. Which means twice your budget (Asus 66AC or Netgear R6300) or $100 more than your budget (Apple Extreme Gen 6).

As usual don't set sky high expectations. There are just too many variables when international bandwidth is involved.

@jeffrey745, i using wired and direct ont

by the way, does anyone has any problems setting up using the asus n66u router?

when i tried to use automatic ip for the WAN, it does not detect any internet. however, when i switch to static ip, the internet works but the problem is the leased ip address only last for 4hrs.

i now using merlin latest firmware for n66u

thanks

*update
i managed to select automatic ip for wan. i made a change to the dhcp query frequency. i changed from the default "aggressive" to "normal".

working fine on aggressive. Did you enable HW acceleration?
Mine's not official direct ont so it had to be disabled and vlan tagged along with the Special Requirement from ISP.

Mine's not official direct ont so it had to be disabled and vlan tagged along with the Special Requirement from ISP.

mine on direct ont, i did not opt to get the RG from starhub. i connect the port 1 of the ONT directly in the WAN port of the n66u.

for the settings part, initially when i chose automatic IP, it does not work, tried entering the vlan, reset router, reset ont, these does not help. eventually, i chose static ip and it works but the IP is leased for 4hrs. so i need to update the settings constantly which i felt something is not right. so i revert back to automatic IP after 4hrs on static ip and all the sudden, the internet is working.

my current settings: i chose automatic IP, did not enter any special requirements for the vlan. i chose "normal" dhcp query frequency. my HW acceleration is enabled, i tried disabling it, no difference.

so kinda weird why initially automatic IP does not work, guess i just leave it as it is for now. as long the internet is working, i am happy liao

Strange.. I am on Direct ONT... No setting needed on my Asus N66U.. All set to auto and just plug into WAN and PORT 1.. Everything working straight away... even draw one Cat 6 cable from the Hall to the Study room to connect to another Asus N56U (Router set as accesspoint).. Both router using same SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.. Now at least my 5Ghz Bandwidth can reach the rooms nicely....

Wifi connected to 5Ghz Bandwidth.. Up and down 200Mbps.... Shiok..

Hardware used.
1. Asus N66U 3.0.0.4.372.31 (Merlin build) Default Setting
2. Asus N56U 3.4.3.6-064 Custom Firmware (Configured as AP)
3. Cat 6 Cable
4. Lenovo x230 w/Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205

Configuration
TP -> Nucleus Direct ONT -> Asus N66U -> Asus N56U
