My house finally switched to fibre...

Starhub's Huawei modem and dlink dir-865l

i discovered something. you can only use port1 on the modem to connect to the router. if you try to connect directly from PC to modem, it doesn't work. port2 to router doesn't work either.

is it the same for everyone?

that is correct

The motorola voice enabled modem you can look around and see who want to sell. Those ex boardband user should have the modem. You just need to bring to SH centre and activite.

Else, we can make arrange to exchange with me, I'm using D-link DVG-N5402SP.

But the wifi performance of this router suck.

To have the best of both world, try to get a 2nd hand motorola voice enabled modem, and a Asus router but you need to ask them to do some configuration on the OTN.

Seems like the digital voice thing is more complicated that I thought it would be... Called them up and they said they would be giving the N5402SP (blimey, in the contract which I didn't notice) and a AC Router(I suppose is the 865)... Going to try it out the next day (installation). If the wifi/ethernet speed ain't stable, I'm going to get a Asus N56 instead. Thanks mate.

What plan? What is the speed u r getting?
Wired or wireless?

Pretty sure it's the 100mbps. Okay, now something weird has happened. My Dlink 865L has a red light, on the earth looking button, which probably means it has no Internet because I can't connect. Will someone tell me what's happening and how to get my Internet back??

Seems like you could be on a wireless connection. Try using an ethernet cable (router>PC) and test at speedtest.net (coz wired connection is more stable). Should be getting around 100mbps on local and way lower on international servers.

Tried resetting and check for any loose connections? Or the problem may be at SH side...

Hi. Just curious to know, why is my current MaxInfinity 100mbps plan at S$50 odd when they have one at S$39.90? Was there a change in the plan names?

I had to do a couple of resets before it finally worked again. It has happened a few times now... not sure why.

Yep, I am on a wireless connection. My desktop is about 5m-ish away from the router and using a cable is not really possible, because it cuts right through my living room.

Do you think I need to get a new network adapter? Because mine seems unable to tap into the 5GHz band. Is the 5GHz even better than the 2.4GHz??

Might want to tune some settings on the router before you fork out $ on a new adapter. 5GHz is better. Also try changing your 2.4G wifi channel to a "less" congested ones to avoid interference (area dependent).

I guess there wasn't any changes in names. The $39.90 is during their promo period I think.

does that mean i can only use their router?

maybe should call starhub to open up the port. it's retarded that I MUST use a router (which slows down the speed) when I can choose not to.

you can if and only you did not subscribe to their VoIP services.

then again, if you really want the VoIP, and do not mind having more than 1 device go for what most people here did

1. Motorola Voice Modem
2. Your Choice of Router and connect to the ONT aka, Direct ONT.

Alternatively,

you can still keep the ONT -> N5402SP and "bridge" your choice of router

The plan price drop. You can try call them and see whether they willing to upgrade to 200 mbps for you.

If you have line of sight with the router, use 5GHz, if your device support it.

If there is walls blocking and the distance is a bit far, you can only use 2.4Ghz.

i think mine is the newer setup up.

i have the open net port -> fibre modem (with only 1st port working) -> dlink dir-865l

i want to do it like this:

fibre modem -> PC (1st port)
fibre modem -> dir-865l (2nd port)
fibre modem -> NAS

the router that they give does not have any voip capabilities...

Think you can only do this,

Fibre modem - dlink router - pc and nas connected to router via different ports of router.

It doesn't work like that. What you're calling a "fibre modem" is the optical network terminal - it converts optical signals into electrical signals and is the interface to the fibre. The ports are meant for different ISPs (or "RSPs" in NGNBN lingo). For example, port 1 is starhub, port 2 can be My Republic, port 3 can be Super Internet, port 4 could be a future RSP who chooses to use Nucleus Connect as their OpCo.

As for your point that the router "slows down" the connection, I'm afraid you're just plain wrong. The router's switching capabilities are higher than 500 mbps...so unless you're on a 1 gig plan (in which case I bow to you in humble supplication), the 865 has no real-world switching impact.

thanks for the clarification on how the ONT works...

it slows down in terms of torrent connectivity, I believe. I've read countless reviews about dlink's routers incapability to handle torrent connections (i usually set my max connections to 999999)
