Yes investing in STI ETF is for the long haul. Again, for myself, to eliminate the effect of timing, I choose to do it on a monthly basis with POEMS. I had been investing in STI ETF for more than 10 years and have divested twice when the prices went low and brought my costs down and when it rises again, I sold off. But this takes time so for those who are in for quick gains, maybe it is not for you. It might happen, but the chance is that STI ETF for most of time, is going to be a slow rising stock....over time. The dividends are average with 3-4% or more depending on your costs. I have no expert opinion but my feeling is that STI will go back to normal levels again, it might a year or two, or even longer, but it will, so to me, accumulating this stock now at this low cost monthly is good for me. But again, understand why you are investing in each counter before triggering.

low price now meh? Waiting for the double dip..looks like the covid19 havent been priced in yet. STI ETF still looking expensive now. Waiting for $1.80. If go for long haul definitely must wait for the real crash.

STI ETF is not a company specific stock. A company can go bankrupt but STI won't. STI simply remove that company from the index and put another company on it. So not being to go back to former glory is highly unlikely. Exceeding it's former high is EXPECTED. Question is WHEN. So the issue plaguing us is not WHAT not IF not HOW but WHEN.

If we have a longer time horizon then there is more chance for we to profit from the investment. The timing of our entry and exit is the question. I am confident that STI will go back to 3200 (my avg price range). I have increased my monthly RSP to $1K since May 2020. I will continue to do that until STI pass 3000. Then I have to make a call if I want to reduce my RSP back to my original amount ($500). I choose to RSP because I do not want to be emotional blinded by my own decision making.

If I lose confidence with STI it means I lose confidence with my country. At this moment I am still confident about my country.

Means if STI ETF goes down to $1.60 you will increase your monthly purchase to $2k?

Low relatively speaking.

With the extraordinary measures by central banks and government, which is like like way way way more crazy than GFC? Really wonder if there will be a 2nd crash. Maybe a correction, but crash quite suspect. What matters is time in the market, not timing the market.

Might end up boat sail.

How do you time the market to know when it is "low" when all we have are public data? It is anyone's guess. It is low now relative to where it was half a year ago. So you can either depend on luck and hope your guess on when to enter the market is right or I prefer my way to buy monthly, let the market do its job and over time, reap the profits. For STI, the last 2 time I divested, it took between 3-5 years for me to reach a good profit to let go. For me dollar cost averaging works best for me for such "sure rise but a matter of time counter". It reduces my stress of having to time the market but instead over time I will benefit whether it rises or drop.

Warren buffet said before, only invest in things you are familiar and comfortable with.

If u dont understand overseas market why invest? Just buy because people say is good?

Don't understand then use eyes see charts la. STI or major sg stocks past decades monthly chart price is so very terrible until like shiat. If that makes you 'comfortable' or whatever, why are you in investments anyway.

So defensive when I criticize Singapore.
You no address my point. Are you a Singaporean/living in Singapore? Or have friends and families in Singapore?

Also there’s a difference between criticising and jinxing/cursing

The problem is SGX is a shrinking/failing market, there are very few good companies that can replace the ones thats been kicked out of STI, even SEA ltd has gone to the US...

STI is basically a one way bet on real estate and financials now, I wouldn't put more than 10% of my stock portfolio into such a thing even if I was wildly bullish, the risks are just enormous.

I from India.

I see got it. I don’t think jinxing/cursing Singapore is welcome here. Constructive criticism yes, but jinxing and cursing no.

And of course if you falsely claim that you are from somewhere when you are not and incite hatred, then you will also get into trouble.
