more and more disinclined to buy a belkin surge protector power strip........


Belkin : Economy Series 6-Socket Surge Protector


only the part in bold is relevant......there isn't any lighted power switch the in particular model anyway

Hey. I got this. The 4-way model.
And now I'm rather 'URGH!' after reading all news, I need the protection light and I missed the individual switch controls.

Protection wise? My goodness. At that time I didn't know below 500J is minimal, minimal protection.

When the $$ comes may consider upgrading those extension plugs.

should any qualified electrician be able to supply and install? how much would it cost?

AFAIK i don't see any individual switches for each socket?

Makes no difference where a connection from power transformer to electronics occurs. A switch makes or breaks a connection just like plugging/unplugging does.

Yup, in UK you can find 13A socket outlet without the normal switch that we expect, and that complied with British Standard.

A switch has the benefit of convenience. Complete withdrawal has the advantage of complete isolation, as surge (or spike) can come through any or all 3 conductor, meaning live, neutral and earth. But besides inconvenience, withdrawal and insertion of plugs carry a small risk of accidental contact with live part, though the design of the plug has already taken care of this risk.

I did
my whole house is surge protected

i installed a German industrial grade surge protection devices (SPD) at my mains incoming circuit breaker box.

Because I have experience burnt MoBO and LCD TV twice due to surge damage on a raining day.

to me, other then the Hardware repair,/replace cost.
Most importantly is the trouble i dont have to go thru

No regret

hi, don't mind sharing how much it cost and who u engaged to do this? any qualified electrician would be able to supply and install?

Please recommend something which can filter out line noise ..... I think my PC in my room can pick up some line noise when pple on/off lights in living room.....:(:(Thks

Other than Belkin and APC, is there other recommended brand?

First learn what already exists in power supplies. Incoming power is often filtered by something equal or superior to filters in Belkin or APC. Then noise is converted to higher voltage DC. Then filtered again. Then converted to radio frequency spikes exceeding 300 volts. Then filtered again while converted to a low voltage. Then filtered again into rock solid and stable DC voltages.

Greatest noise is created as high frequency spikes exceeding 300 volts. Existing and superior filters even clean that much 'dirtier' electricity. Anything that Belkin or APC does is completely undone and then put through better filters. Existing filters are far superior to what magic plug-in devices might do.

Why would anyone recommend near zero filters from APC or Belkin? Many are educated by advertising; not by facts, technology, or numbers. And that says what every filter recommendation must provide - the numbers. No numbers are why high profit scams are so easily promoted. No specification numbers means a recommendation is suspect - possibly a complete lie.

My brother's computer just got fried for no reason. There wasnt a power trip or lightning storm that caused it. So I suspect its the power from his room socket. But we called an electrician to check and he said it was ok.

So should I be getting a surge protector to prevent future incidents??

could it be a faulty PSU in the pc? if it is then surge protector will be useless

A failure occurred. I have no idea how electricity works. I did not collect facts such as spec numbers, model history, or which part failed. Hearsay (wild speculation) blames bad electricity. So damage was from a surge. Advertising, feelings, and wild speculation can replace science and reasoning.

Nothing else failed. So why assume electricity was harmful? Did incandescent bulbs brighten by over 30%? Then no reason exists to believe high voltage (reason for that electrician) caused damage. Electrician only confirmed what was obvious.

Most failures are due to manufacturing defects. A perfect example existed years ago. Counterfeit electrolyte in electrolytic capacitors caused electronics to fail years later. That reality (defects created months or years ago) is why most failures occur.

Of the well over 30 possible reasons for damage, why wildly speculated only one reason ('dirty' electricity) when nothing else is damaged? Because most only recite what advertising and hearsay tell them. Most forget concepts even taught in school science classes that define what is necessary to have a fact.

First collect facts. And also learn basic concepts - in this case how electricity works How does an adjacent protector block or absorb surges that may be hundreds of thousands of joules? Critical to every conclusion are numbers. For some reason, wild speculation invented a surge. Then an adjacent protector, rated to absorb hundreds or a thousand joules will magically stop or absorb surges that are hundreds of thousands of joules? Always learn numbers long before building a suspect list.

Collect more hard facts. What else was damaged by 'dirty' electricity? Nothing? Then why only speculate 'dirty electricity exists? What part (transistor, capacitor, resistor, etc) was damaged? Without that fact, then nobody can say why failure happened. We can guess based upon trends known from experience over a past 100 years. A majority of failures are due to manufacturing defects. Zero reasons exist to 1) blame 'dirty' electricity or 2) that a surge protector would somehow block or absorb 'dirty' electricity.

Sorry I don't really understand your post, but from the rough jist of it you are saying that I shouldn't blame the electricity source as the cause of it?

I just bought an entire new com for my bro, including the PSU. Just want to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.

Dude you should calm down. Anyways, I appreciate your reply but the entire computer failing is not due to some defective capacitor. Unless you are trying to say that the cause of it was the PSU that fried the entire computer, that I can agree on.
