how to identify not so good instructors and good instructors?

understand that improvement also depends on the student, what if you one really meets an incompetent instructor and you're not improving although you feel that you've put in effort?

I think the better ones are those who teach competitive swimming, based on my observation. For most of people, who just want to learn how to swim and keep afloat, basic instructors are good enough. Thereafter, it depends on your aptitude.

But if you are aiming for competitions, and want to swim fast and efficient, then those are different type of instructors.

If you've put in much effort but not improving, then change the instructor as perhaps his methods may not be effective for you.

Hi,

I would like to offer free freestyle/butterfly pointers for up to 5 persons each session on every Saturday, 6 P.M. Location at Civil Service Club, Tessensohn Rd. Just pay entrance fee of $1.

I am only doing freestyle/front crawl as it is most efficient in terms of health benefits. Please note, I have zero knowledge of breast/back stroke. During my heyday I managed 26 seconds freestyle and 28 seconds fly per length. Now I swim everyday just for health benefits.

Please PM if interested.

Is this still valid?

For healthy lifestyle, when is the best time to swim? Morning before work (7 to 9am), afternoon(3-5pm on weekend) or evening after work (1830-1930hrs)?

Is swimming in the evening too cold? How about morning?

One more question. Do you find swimming cap useful? Is it necessary for protecting hair?

1. What time is best for swimming-depends on you bah.

2.is swimming in the evening too cold-not really. It depends on the weather during daytime. I have swum at yishun swimming complex and jurong west swimming complex where the water can be warm in the evening due to the sun warming the water in the daytime

I personally don't use it but my other friend wears it all the time to protect her hair as she claims that it helps.

For healthy lifestyle, swim anytime is fine!

As for best time to swim, it depends on individual, whenever suits your schedule.

Personally, I felt that the swimming pool water is colder in the morning than at evening. So I tend to swim after 10 am, not just when the pool is opened at 8 am. I also feel less endurance swimming at evenings after work but that's just me. Depends on individual.

I would strongly encourage for everyone to wear a swimming cap. Not for protecting our hair from chlorine, but more to prevent contamination of the pool water from our hair, which may contain dandruff or other head conditions. Or perhaps avoid having strands of hair left in the pool water, just like in shower. More for hygiene reasons.

I used to think as you do that a swimming cap protects our hair, until I saw a YT clip of Sun Yang teaching swimming, and then explaining why we all should wear a swimming cap.

Finally, my personal thought is that a swimming cap is useful as it enables aerodynamics as you glide through the water... maybe just perception... ha ha.

Guys,

Where is a good place to get goggles for kids?

Regards Wayne

Qoo10 lor if you don't mind China brands.

Retail shops usually sell branded ones, but at least you can see the real thing. These are available at sports complex, or just try the departmental stores.

freestyle need to have slight twist in the lower back ?
or just turn your body only ?

No need for any twist in the back. You are required to rotate the entire body and your neck at most to breathe. No need to twist your back.

Try decalthon for swim wear and accessories. Cheap and good

Breaststroke only
I learnt freestyle, backstroke & fly on my own after understanding fundamentals of swimming. Took me 2 years to master 200IM. :o
