Sianzzz, totally no oc results at all, why didn't they try another mobo?

Overclocking

As you have been able to notice, for the 4820K we have no overclock results. Normally we include these as standard. However, the BIOS we received from MSI resulted into the fact that we just could not get an overclock going. Even activating an XMP profile would result in a boot crash. Very unfortunate. That combined with roughly the one workday of time we have been able to spend on this processor made us halt on overclocking and move on-wards with some multi-GPU testing. Fortunately the processor at default clock frequencies works as expected. The processor in combo with this MSI motherboard however will require a new firmware update.

Overclocking: stuck at 4.5 GHz

Finally, we had a go at overclocking the new Intel processors. We combined the Core i7 4960X with an ASUS Rampage IV Formula motherboard, a Patriot Viper Extreme Div. 2 DDR3-2400 quad-kit and an NZXT Kraken X60 liquid cooling solution.

For our overclocking attempts, we set the Vcore voltage at 1.35 volt, with an identical multiplier for all cores. This resulted in a maximum achievable speed of 4.5 GHz, which translates to a Cinebench 11.5 score of 13.35 points. In other words, comparable to a Sandy Bridge-E CPU running at 4.8 GHz. At this clock frequency the maximum core temperature we measured was a very modes 67 degrees Celsius (or about 153 degrees Fahrenheit).

Although that is lukewarm at worst in terms of overclocking, we were unable to hit 4.6 GHz with our sample and liquid cooling. Raising the Vcore voltage to 1.4 or higher resulted in an immediate system crash the moment we attempted to run a benchmark.

I think our bro is the first to obtain a full retail boxed version and post online, as some sites noted, Extreme edition no longer comes packed in black box? Intel also give up liao...

I hope the poor overclocks so far are due to immature bios because IVE is soldered ley, if not that means 22nm 3D transistors are fail at overclocking....the future dont look bright....sianz the Core era of 1ghz++ free boost is over..

The Core i7-4960X CPUs we've overclocked seem to be pretty typical of the breed. Asus says that only about 20% of the Ivy Bridge-E CPUs it's tested so far will hit 4.7GHz on 1.4V. Just 2% are stable at 4.8GHz, while nearly half will do 4.6GHz.

Results are representative of 100 C0 and 20 C1 CPUs that were binned and tested for stability under load; these results will most likely represent retail CPUs. BE ADVISED CPU vid varies considerably for the same frequency between CPUs as always cooling also will affect CPU frequency scaling.

Approximately 90-100% of CPUs can go up to 4.5GHz
Approximately 80-90% of CPUs can go up to 4.6GHz
Approximately 60-70% of CPUs can go up to 4.7GHz
Approximately 40-50% of CPUs can go up to 4.8GHz
The remaining % can yield CPUs that may offer scaling up to and in excess of 50x turbo multipliers. These CPUs are in very low % margins and in addition voltage required will considerably vary (i.e 4.8GHz at 1.400 vs 4.8GHz at 1.500). In most situations due to the excessive wattage level that needs to be dissipated unless a extremely non leaky chip (low voltage operation is hard) frequencies exceeding 5.0GHz will not be achievable under air cooling configurations.

Any articles on the speed difference between 2 x8 and 2 x16?

I now can run 4.4 @ 1.29v. What is the norm voltage for the 4930K?
