bros! just hooted something that's really useful for watch lovers, especially those who're into vintage/pre-owned watches - and damn value for money, too!
it's a slide-out loupe with built in LED light source!
i've been meaning to get a good-performing and reasonably priced loupe for a while now.
bro gaoxing84 mentioned a while back that he scored a loupe for less than $10 at people's park centre, though i can't remember if he mentioned the shop.
so i went to have a look.
boy, you wouldn't believe where i found it!
the first shop on the ground floor selling crystals next to the toto outlet had one so called 40X magnification with LED for $25. can't be this one, right? size also not compact. left cos don't want to be a carrot. found out later that its magnification is no different from real 10X loupe. (specs shop story below).
then went to pasar malam type dollar shop. found one. with LED light, too. but disappointing performance. only 5X mag @ $5.90.
next went up 2nd floor to the spectacles shop to try my luck. surprisingly, they seemed to have, until the boss told his staff it's sold out. he helpfully showed me the zeiss loupe he uses (not for sale!). he claims it's the same one use for jewellery and is standard 10X mag. tried it on my watch. yup, it's good alright. but @ $175-$200? er... i'll pass. a shop customer overheard and chimed in to say a proper jeweller's loup should by 20mm diameter instead of the zeiss 10mm diameter. good to know!
finally, still refusing to give up and hopeful, i approach the electronic parts shop on the 3rd floor.
SURPRISE! SURPRISE!!
THEY HAVE THE ONE AS PICTURED ABOVE!
- performs almost as well as the zeiss loupe (of course zeiss what!).
- shows up all the imperfections undetected by the naked eye like the zeiss loupe.
- negligible distortion / chromatic aberration under good lighting.
- is compact.
- slides out of its own protective housing.
- has a built-in bright white LED light source for low light situations or when you really need to eyeball the tiniest imperfection (batteries included!).
- seller says the lens is made of glass instead of plastic (inferior).
the best part is the price, too.
only $7.80 nia!
so bros, if you're still looking for a value for money, quality loupe to help you in your pre-owned watch hunting & inspection or just to admire your watches up close and personal, you may wish to drop by at:
Koba Electronics (S) Pte Ltd
101 Upper Cross Street
#03-06 People's Park Centre
Tel: 6533-1672 / 6533-6434
disclaimer: i have ZERO financial interest in this recommendation. i just found a damn good deal which i can't wait to share with all my bros here! the service by the boss's son Mr Lim is also excellent.
ps. packaging says mag 30X (er...? performance similar to zeiss loupe leh), diameter 21mm (seems legit). because the housing is plastic, it's lightweight - so don't expect robust protection from a s/steel housing of a professional grade jeweller's loupe.
