Wise to get a maybe used 2008 sea master planet ocean for diving? Or should I go for a new one?

imho, luxury watches, be it diver, chrono, or whatever, are:

- worn primarily as man bling for peacocking for the majority, and
- purchased/traded/collected as expensive, though intricately crafted, mechanical toys for watch enthusiasts/hobbyists.

apart from the distinct minority with deep pockets, it doesn't make sense to risk damage to a luxury watch for its tool functions, especially when real tools today like G-Shocks exists to do a better job for a cheaper price. better yet, if it gets damaged, it can be easily replaced for cheaper than sending your luxury watch for its servicing!

as for diving, PADI certified divers will tell you that the dive computer has all but superceded the dive watch and does the job better, safer and more reliably.

admittedly, electronics can fail. so a dive watch can/should be worn as a fail-safe.

even then, as a backup, a seiko automatic diver (eg the turtle) or quartz diver can do the job just as well as the planet ocean.

buy the PO if you really like it. but wear a seiko/citizen if you actually dive. both brands have reliable, ISO certified divers.

cheers! :D

I think the supposed "lack of interest" of the SD4k boils down to its value proposition. 2 main points:

1) If you're going for a more "vintage" piece, the earlier SDs can be had for less than 10k (unless you're talking about rare unicorns like the legendary Double Red or other early vintages)

2) For a modern Rolex diver, most people go for the Sub because the differences between a Sub and the SD4k may not be significant enough to justify the price diff (10k for a Sub nodate VS 14k for a SD4K). From a pure aesthetic point of view, there are very little differences between a modern Sub and a SD4K, and 99% of wearers won't need the diving upgrades (extended clasp, more water resistance) anyways.

For me, I went with a SD4k because of the following reasons:
- I like the extra thickness of the case (but yet still within reasonable means unlike the DSSD) compared to the Sub. The case just has a balanced substantial aesthetic to it.
- Date function without the cyclops (best of both worlds IMHO)
- I like the full minute graduations around the bezel.
- I prefer a modern piece with ceramic "bling" bezel.

All in all, it's just a nice balance / in-between of the Subs and the DSSD, and checks off the boxes in 1 nice package for me. :)

In fact, I wear it so often that it has become my daily beater (almost).

Couldn't have given a 2 cents worth on the SD4k better myself! I'm glad I ditched the idea of the DSSD because of the thickness (not as versatile as SD4k and the Subs), so it can't fit well underneath a cuff when the occasion calls for it.

Oookay, so I just learnt that despite the thickness, the SD wears smaller than a modern sub. This changes a lot of things for me.

I think that is mainly due to the SD4k lugs being slightly slimmer than the modern Sub. The Sub has a flatter and wider profile on the wrist, hence it wears larger than the SD4k, despite the 2 of them having the same case size of 40mm. :)

U forgot holy grail - DW

Best value holding, can even multiply ur GFs

none hold its value well, all have to take 20% hit if bought brand new.
usually traditional dress watch dont hold value well.

if you want buy alr and can sell fast, in our country, rolex is the fastest.

Diving get a new skx007 should be less heart pain and probably better seal and wr

Older watch if open case back and not tested may still lose to a new skx007?

Yeah, the fact that it looks smaller head-on was what made me contemplate it between the 114060 last year. However, after trying both side by side at the AD, I decided to go for the 114060 as I find it less top-heavy.

3rd day with this. dressy blue dial with shots of green markers to keep it youthful.

It's an automatic. Am I correct about an automatic winder for an automatic watch? or should it be something else? Sorry, I'm not really sure. Watch was a gift. :s13:

some cheaper winders can magnetise your watch and cause it to run much faster, so be cautious when shopping for one ;)
