Time has come for me to make a decision on my daily beater diver with rubber. Been looking around for more than a month. Wife is gonna kill me if I still wait and wait. :s13: Your opinion?

1) Hydrocarbon Ceramic XV [middle] (Low to mid $3K)/ Airborne [left

2) Tudor Pelagos (High $4K to low $5K?)

3) Breitling Superocean Heritage 42 (Low $5K?)

Out of the choices... Pelagos, alternative I would go is the longines hydroconquest

yea lor yea lor... if not convenient to share here...can PM us?

1.5K for this particular model is really a steal.

ditto on it too... 1.5k for this sounds like a steal....

1.5k from where?

Oh guys, I got that from Hour Glass. They give up to 25% discount at the moment.

BTW, the 1.5k is NOT this model... sorry for the confusion... :o

Anyway I do see another model with visible tourbillon, price also around 1.5k +-.

What brand when wear go out people will say "waaa! Expensive watch" and is automatic and 1k budget.. :p

The waaa is referring to normal people.. Not people who are wearing Rolex, omega, Patek etc.. ;)

it depends on your audience's level of watch knowledge & appreciation.

not all watch lovers can afford luxury pieces.

but that does not stop them from admiring, appreciating, discussing & learning about them so that when they eventually can afford them, they know what best value for money to get.

watch lovers who delves into the mechanical aspects of a watch appreciates movements (the bunch of gears, springs & stuff that keeps proper time) that are designed, built and assembled by a single manufacturer from the ground up (ie. an in-house movement) that performs, more so than one that has been outsourced, purchased, merely modified and dropped into a watch case.

that's why plain, simple, undecorated in-house movement brands like seiko & orient are respected by true watch lovers who own luxury pieces - as well as seikos & orients!

of course, sometimes, there come along popular quality made & well-received designs that used pre-assembled movements or ebaches like the tudor black bay & tudor pelagos.

"normal" people lack the interest and thus the time & effort to learn about watches.

to them "design" and "brand" is what matters.

that's why you've "fashion" watches that are the equivalent of empty calories.

if the segment you're appealing to like bling, then a swarovski encrusted watch can give the semblance & illusion of a full diamond pave/studded blinder.

some people like over-complicated, busy dials over a plain one. for them, you need to get one with the most subdials, graphics & indicators you can find.

ultimately, it's a matter of taste.

wear the watch that makes YOU smile.

but if you want long-term value for money, save & spend on quality, iconic luxury watches that has proven to stand the test of time for decades AND will continue to do so for decades to come, instead of spending the equivalent amount on a collection of ultimately mediocre & forgettable watches.

imo, such a basic collection will be:

1. the rolex family of sports watches (notably the submariner diving watch).

2, the omega speedmaster professional 42mm moonwatch / the rolex dayton cosmograph (chronographs).

3. the jaeger-lecoultre reverso. (iconic rectangular dress watch that was ironically created as a sports watch for polo play army officers of the british army in india).

4. the jaeger-lecoultre master ultra thin dress watch. (the quintessential, round dress watch design that's understanded, elegant & stylish).

5. the rolex full gold day-date. (the undisputed status symbol for many who are not even into watches, although there're even higher end pieces that can break the bank, but are unknown among the larger public).

Nice hoot ^.^

Those who choose explorer...can share why you choose explorer instead of air king or milgauss or DJ???

Actually did get to try the DJ and Milgauss. Airking too small, so didn't bother. DJ does not stand out for me... the Milgauss looks decent but it was the explorer that seduced and lured me to get it......the rest you guys should know liao. :s8:;)

Thanks for the advice.. Did check out the Hamilton intramatic and love it.. But the only thing holding me back is no second hand.. Haha.. :(

the default choice for classic/heritage looking watches comfortably under $1k is the tissot heritage visodate.

or you can consider the hamilton intramatic 38mm. slightly more than $1k.

I would go for the Pelagos. It is versatile with both SS bracelet and rubber strap, and it's titanium with beautiful blue lume and clean dial.

In fact, even the bracelet is made of titanium and the clasp is easily self-adjustable. Very desirable piece indeed!

Its made of titanium? !?! That means this watch is almost weightless then...
