What player is this ?

AK Jr, but in a limited edition black color. Black is only limited to China, there is a red with gold volume knob version limited only to Hong Kong, and a blue color collaboration with Super Junior. E1 personal audio brought all of them in but very limited quantities.

definitely not CW. Old fashioned guy...only those classic names he will know.

Haha that's what I thought!

Hes 66 this yr. So far his watches r rather plain bracelet types wif silver face. So omega n grand seiko can get wif 5k? Will show him some pics.

Grand Seiko has some of the nicest dress watches/plain silver faces watches I've seen. A quick search on Amazon Japan shows that you can get some at well under $5000.

Omega also cannot get? Wah...like this must show him tudor liao. Grand seiko also i tink difficult to get auto for 5k.

Bro, text this guy. You can check with him with a budget of 5k what Grand Seiko model available to you. I do know that you can find the SBGA011 for around 5.3k in Japan. Local Seiko boutique price very high, probably no chance of getting anything from there.

As for Speedmaster, I strongly believe they are still available brand new below 5k. Maybe the pros here can chime in. I believe GX bro here got it below 5k recently.

As for Tudor, I think the only models worth getting at the moment now are the Black Bays and Pelagos.

yes...u r right. He wants new only. I did suggest 2nd hand...but straight got rejected.

GS definitely no.

As for Omega, if auto and its those 8500 calibre, don't think can.

Omega also cannot get? Wah...like this must show him tudor liao. Grand seiko also i tink difficult to get auto for 5k.

Grand Seikos... Go SG boutique try and buy online from Japan.

$5k how to get omega first hand? Quartz models lor

now since your FIL is 66 year old, there will definitely be many occasions whereby he will forget how to wind up automatic watches, end up spoiling the mechanism inside and then need to spends few hundreds or even thousands to replace a new movement.

after that... grumble left, grumble right, grumble why recommend him to buy such a "lousy" watch :(

Look at quartz better. and don't even bother to recommend grand SEIKO. To the older generations, their impression of Seiko is not [high-class]

try telling your FIL to fork out 10k for grand SEIKO and see what will happen to your nuts :s13:

Consider the following quartz:
- Tag Heuer Aquaracer / Link
- Omega aqua terra seamaster 38.5mm Quartz
- Omega Diver seamaster 28mm Quartz
- Baume-Mercier Classima Quartz
- Longines Conquest
- Longines La Grande Classique

To the older generations, they are very familiar with these swiss-made brands and it is more "high class" to them.

Avoid Mont-blanc as well, because to the older generations, Mont-blanc is famous for high class business pens.

To avoid any unnecessary "dissing" from your FIL... be smart and do some research about what kind of swiss-made watch brands were very famous back in the 70s & 80s.... that will give you a good idea what kind of watches to recommend and avoid.

next, bring your FIL to proper Watch Boutiques along Orchard Road or Raffles City Shopping Center or Marina Square or DFS @ Orchard.

please... Don't even think about bringing him to "Mustafa" or "Bencoolen"...

Always remember, your FIL Today, has the money to buy a proper luxury watch, so bring him to a proper luxury watch boutique. To him, its not like he don't have money to spend on watches in a proper watch boutique and need to settle for those "low-class" pre-owned watch shops...

If you are able to chip in around 2-3K, then your FIL might be able to get a basic Rolex explorer I or the re-branded Rolex Oyster perpetual.

i dont agree with getting quartz as a luxury watch unless its a gs...

I disagree actually... like my Father (almost same age as shorty7's FIL), he knows swiss watch brands like Rolex, Omega, Longines, Tag Heuer, Patek, JLC etc.
And he also know that they make quartz and automatic watches.

my Father also knows Seiko and Citizen... ask him whether would he "throw" 5 or 10k on a Seiko watch? He will first throw me outta window... then "throw" the money on Omega or Rolex.
the reason: GS was first created in 1960s and it was only sold in Japan & a selected asian countries... Seiko never really market GS outside of Japan & golbally until around 2010.

to him, he prefers quartz movement, because if he don't want to wear the watch for a few days, he don't need to bother about winding the watch or changing the date at all... he can just wear and go...

battery dead? Just bring the watch to a watch shop he trust or back to the same AD to change the battery...

and shorty07, imo when you bring your FIL to the AD watch boutiques, be professional and have slightly more knowledge about the watches, so that you are able to give your FIL adequate advice on choosing a watch but still, leaving the final choice to him

Think he should get an automatic and not a quartz.

add in Raymond Weil as well.

during the early 90s, Raymond Weil had very high exposure in Singapore because they were the exclusive sponsors for 10pm TV news slots.

well... try explaining to a 66 year old uncle who has basic knowledge about watches, the steps on:
1) how to wind an automatic/self-winding/mechancial watch
and
2) How to maintain & how many days the owner need to re-wind an automatic/self-winding/mechancial watch so that it will tick constantly

and see at the end of the day which type of watch the FIL will choose

Tagheuer aquaracer for FIL good enough already. Dont even need 5k. Got brand. Got look. The other day i just saw an uncle boss in a toy shop wearing a tag. Quite cio on an old man. Not too old fashioned nor too ahpek. Wear omega rolex those will make FIL look even older. Can consider seriously.

at the price of 5k, most of the quartz watches you are most likely paying for the logo on it, which i feel is stupid. the only exception being gs and the justification being they grow their own quartz crystal, they regulate it to 10sec/year and have a service interval of 50years outside of changing batteries. almost everything is built and tested inhouse. how many other companies can boast this feat? on the lower end of luxury rolex would be one of them which most would know about. as for automatics, most watches have overwind protection so there shouldnt be any worries about overwinding.
