If the resale value drop

how is this even true

Your mindset is purely flipper mindset. Quality timepieces can be passed on to future generations for use, not everything is resale.

lolol. rolex > patek - marketing wise yes, easier to afford? yes.

but saying patek won't survive in the future without hype, dead wrong....

patek need rolex, rolex need patek that's for sure.

patek need customers to start with rolex and eventually move on to higher quality timepieces, not necessarily workhorse kind like rolex, but generally way better complications and finishing.

rolex need patek because when you're bored with patek at the top, you need to bring yourself down to the ground, wearing rolex can be fun during those time.

at the end of the day, the watch industry don't need hype to survive, be it now or in the future. resale value and hype cannot be an indication of being a better brand or rather manufacturer.

I wonder how grey all around the world coordinated the rise in patek resale price
it's thru dealer to dealer sales.

Dealer A have it for 80k
Dealer B say eh sell me 85k, hoping he can sell for 90k
Dealer C say eh i got customer who wants it, sell me for 90k, sent to customer for 100k

most are dealers who are new in the market trying to get a quick flip and are unable to hold stock for a long time

rinse and repeat.

same goes for AP and Rolex. so now, market crash because it's soft, prices went too high too fast. many uncertainties globally has stopped end users from buying. that's why those dealers holding at 90k, scare liao, anyhow throw price - those are the idiots.

like for example, this shop dealer at bencoolen, don't want to name who la but notorious for throwing price, screwing their customer.

they posted a rootbeer for sale at 40.9k, was sold in a day (well it was the cheapest then), the very next day, those idiots posted the another rootbeer (same as the sold piece) at 39.9k. lol the customer who bought the first piece sure jump, overpaid by 1k within a day.

so with these dumba$$ shop dealers that don't have the capacity to hold stock and at the least post the same price as the previous piece within the short time frame, causes the mass market to panic. End users surfing carousell think prices dropping daily, decided to hold their horses. that's why the prices are dropping so fast.

it has come to a point where prices are kinda stabilised but buying power is not there, everyone is waiting for the next dip. however so, prices are bound to go back up once the buying power is back on track.

if you're looking at that rootbeer/pepsi/batman or anything, this is the time to take the opportunity and buy it.
don't wait till the prices go up and start panic buying - happened in Nov 2021- Feb 2022

exactly, those who bought before 2016, you think they can about resale?

5167a - 18-19k can get already used
15300 15400 - 18k only lol, i was offered 15300 no box and papers, missing links for 9k LOL in 2014
batman - like new, 1 year old , 8-9k can get already

you think those selling then care about resale? lol

yes, alot of shops opening left and right, hoping to cash in but yet they don't know the market well enough.
but ok la. those who survive are those who are in the game long enough.

Is it true for Hour Glass, you have to buy 3 regular watches to get on the wait list for a sports model? Does that include other brands since Datejusts are also oos?

Not sure about “3 regular watches” but I’ve been told a “journey” starts with a DJ (get on wait list or wait for the AD to “anyhow” sell u a random model).

Then u add “house brands” into the journey depending on which sports model u want.

Time really changed... jiayou to all in getting your dream watches! I do feel that now is a good time to buy at grey prices already, the prices will shoot up even more after this period (my own speculation)

I still think no need to worry about grey price. You just wear it for 5 years and longer, the price will catch up.

But of course if you want to catch a flip, that's another story. Do it wisely and you can still flip upwards but if you sell at a higher price, most probably you can't buy back at that same price too

Anyone knows what the AD situation is like in Korea? Will be heading there in 2 weeks and wanted to try my luck :)
Was there in Dec 2021. All the boutiques require everyone to queue to get a number to be able to enter the boutique. The number will be given at 10am daily but flippers start queueing at 4-5am with tent outside the store (imagine winter back then). Boutique is full with all popular models displayed with staff but cannot enter unless you have a number. 1 of the boutiques staff was nice enough to show me what is available on that day.. there was DJ 36mm blue dial, no sports model.

I have since went to stores in West USA and Bangkok in the past few months.. no watches on sale.. all are exhibition pieces. Even Changi Airport stores only left 1-2 female pieces for sale.

yes.

patek is not really connecting with the youths

if you do a search on social media, the popularity of patek is very low

patek market share dropped from 5.8% to 4.8%

AP droped by 0.1%

RM increased by 0.2%

didn’t know youth can afford PP. your youth is what age group? Youth in my mind is 15-24 yrs old. Our EDMW youth drop 100k on watch easy easy

Thats why

patek made itself too ulu

younger generation know nothing about it

watch brands need hype to survive
Aiyo.. from the way u speak, is no different from those watch noobs who wants only flashy in your face kind of watches. Rolex fits the bills perfectly coz well.. all watch noobs know Rolex hence the hype.

Where else a Patek minute repeater or even a perpetuate calendar need no hype and it it still so well sought after by collectors. Like u say, go lucky plaza and those yp will pick a GMT over a minute repeater anytime of the day. Only after they knew the later cost 100x more. lol

Thanks bro for the update. I have read about this before, and thought it's quite extreme to queue at 4 am in the winter lol. Does this apply to just Seoul or other cities in Korea (such as Busan) as well, if you know? I am guessing there are at least 20 queue numbers a day but there won't be 20 watches for sale lol. Nonetheless, will give it a try when I am there.

the issue is perceived value

yes its 100x more but yp will rather choose the rolex gmt over minute repeater patek assuming money is not the option

it is human nature to be flashy

i think youth is an important segment

they are a generation who have been influenced by apple watch.

Rolex done well by connecting to the youths and working class demographics with tudor

Panerai & Franck Muller is a good case study of hype to no hype

If we look at quality versus price point then glashutte original is much better than patek in terms of value

wah lau. Money is always going to an option else why will they choose over a "branded" Rolex over an unknown Patek?
