Hello,

Wondering if we have any UniFi experts here? I recently got a UniFi Dream Machine to replace my existing UniFi setup (CloudKey, switch, access point) but run into some troubles.

Current Existing Setup

ViewQwest Fibre Modem
|
|
US‑8‑150W Switch --- CloudKey
| |
| --- Wired devices
|
Unifi Ap AC-Pro --- Wireless devices

• 10.10.10.0/24 | Management Network (Routers, Switches, Servers, etc)
10.10.10.1 - ViewQwest Zone Router
10.10.10.5 - UniFi Cloud Key
10.10.10.6 - UniFi Switch 8 Port
10.10.10.7 - UniFi AP-AC-Pro

• 10.10.20.0/24 | Home Network (Computers, Phones, Tablets, etc)
10.10.20.1 - Computer
10.10.20.2 - Computer
10.10.20.3 - Phone
10.10.20.4 - Tablet
...

Internet connectivity is provided by ViewQwest vi a Zhone 2424A Router which also handles DHCP:

The existing, standalone UniFi CloudKey has correctly 10.10.10.5 assigned:

New Planned Setup

ViewQwest Fibre Modem
|
|
US‑8‑150W Switch ----- Wired devices
|
|
UniFi Dream Machine --- Wireless devices

Now, switching over to the new UniFi Dream Machine setup, I want to keep the same IP subnets. Currently the integrated CloudKey has the default IP 192.168.1.1 assigned. There is no option to change the IP anymore in the CloudKey configuration page (as shown in the screenshot above) so I assume that this has moved into the general UniFi setup page.

UniFi Dream Machine WAN Settings

What should go into the WAN settings? Should the IPv4 connection type be left to 'Using DHCP' or should that be switched to a static IP? And if so... which IP (as I also have a public IPv4 address)?

UniFi Dream Machine LAN Settings

Gtz3ssC.jpg

And for the LAN settings - what should the 'Gateway/Subnet' IP be? Also assuming that DHCP should be switched to 'None' if the Zone 2424A keeps on handling DHCP allocation?

Thanks a lot!

Not a Unifi expert....but you can get Viewqwest to configure your zhone router to bridge mode, so your Unifi Dream Machine will handle the DHCP...and be the main router.

Btw, where did you get the Dream machine? :s11:

Zhone --> UDM ---> US-8-150w

U need to contact VQ. Provide them mac address of UDM & ask to set bridge mode

You can get it in Sim Lim Sq or from @t258jgn .

Just wondering why you don't just bridge your VQ zhone router and let the dream machine do all the work. Let the Zhone thing be an ONT.

The Dream Machine has the same AP as UAP-nanoHD.

Bizgram at Sim Lim Square 05-50 has the standard and pro version in stock for some time already:
Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine ....................UDM ............. 529.-
Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine PRO.................UDM-PRO ......... 898.-

Zhone --> UDM ---> US-8-150w
Initial setup will be 'Zhone --> UDM'

U need to contact VQ. Provide them mac address of UDM & ask to set bridge mode
As I have admin rights on the Zhone 2424A I can disable DHCP and let the DreamMachine handle IP address assignment. If possible, the Zhone 2424A also has some Ethernet ports I want to utilise. In this case I assume there is no need to contact ViewQwest?

Just wondering why you don't just bridge your VQ zhone router and let the dream machine do all the work. Let the Zhone thing be an ONT.
I guess that will be the most reasonable approach.
What would be the IPv4 connection type that goes into the WAN configuration?
And what would be the Gateway IP that would need to go into the LAN configuration?

UDM-PRO is still in Beta Testing Phase.
Better chk with them the source of their Ubiquiti products :s22:

4 years ago I used Zhone. You can't do much things when u log inside Zhone.
It slows down speed & always DC when using as ONR

Later I use my own router & ask VQ to set Zhone as ONT in bridged mode.
Few minutes job over the phone
The speed so much better :s12:

I you still wish to use Zhone as ONR then

Zhone (192.168.1.x) ==> UDM (Disable the Router & use as AP) ===> US-8-150W

Boss, the UDM-PRO still doesn't support an external Cloudkey right? Will it eventually support one or will never support external CloudKey?

Never support external cloud key. UDM-Pro no wi-fi.

After CNY...lets celebrate CNY first.

- You can setup UniFi as an AP (wired backhaul) or Mesh Mode (wireless backhaul).
- The setup would be: Termination Point (TP) > ONT (Modem) > UDM (Router) > Additional UniFi Access Points (AP).
- If you do not need the security features of the UDM, you can also any other router, and just get 1-2 UniFi Access Points. Depending on the house layout, if you can centrally locate your Access Point, 1 AP could just be required.

udm should preferably be connected directly to ont as it has superior routing capabilities. you can reuse your old router as a spare ap as well

Thanks for the reply. By itself, how good is the UDM, as a wireless router? As in the 2.4ghz n 5ghz range?

I don't use the UDM, so can't comment. But, with 1 UniFi AP, am able to cover almost the entire house (except the kitchen) due to my house layout. So had to have another AP to cover the kitchen.

If range (coverage) is a concerned, go the the UniFi Long Range one.

Here where i come in :o:s13:=:p

- wifi is definite closer pro-sumer level
- i can hit wifi 5 max speeds on iphone 11pro max [ when standing directly infront of the UDM itself ]
- range wise 800sqft with normal and usual wall + door, will cut performance by 30% within 2m range
anything beyond 3m, say from main living room to batheroom, will drop another 20%
[ just by my own experience, when trying to stream netflix or youtube whilst showering ]
- within the app, you can opt to tweak ALOT of settings which other gaming routers might not even come close.

all in all, if you're in a landed property 1 UDM + 1 NanoHD = full coverage [ decent speeds]

however if you're cover say 3 levels and what not, then you may have to us more satelite.

BTW the interface has alot of customisability and information you need at a glance.

No problems,

There’s a lot of sleeper pro here lol , the main thing I gotten the UDM. Is because of the all in one for SEcurity gateway and other aspects of the IDS/ IPS etc

This is on top of its very capable wifi which can easily work well with other routers being in bridge mode

Usually I would recommend this device should my less tech savvy folks want a all in one package that is more security focus

Asus and the rest is up for toss , even if you get a pfsense device , it will be really overwhelming, thus the UDM
