I had a night in Monterey because I was driving down to LA, so I probably had abit more time. Point Lobos is more natural, Carmel can feel abit more commercialised. I think about 1-2 hours is good enough for PL.

For my SF to Big Sur.

I was thinking of having dinner at Monterey. Idea?

what is the best route from LA to grand canyon?

The best and quickest route is Los Angeles CA via Hover Dam

North on I-15 toward Barstow/ Las Vegas 213 miles
East on I-215 towards Henderson 11 miles
South on US 93 towards Boulder City/Phoenix 62 miles
Left turn (North) on to Pierce Ferry Road 28 miles

Right turn (East) on to Diamond Bar Road 21 miles Diamond Bar Road will end at the only entrance to Grand Canyon West, which is the Grand Canyon West Airport. Parking is free. Approximate Travel Time: 6hrs 15mins

Monterey is alot bigger, so you should probably have dinner there. I just ate Denny's when I was there, cause I was in town very late in the night, but there should be couple of restaurants around

OK Thanks.

Wife jumped the gun and chose Red Lion

i jus checked in a hr ago at best western anaheim inn. i kinda like it here based on first impression. room is quite spacious with 2 double bed, kinda wasted as me and my partner only use one.

the inn is kinda cosy, outside is brightly lit cos its jus across disney and the counter staff is quite friendly and helpful. stayed at harrahs hotel prior to reaching anaheim and my experience with them was good as well despite me reading terrible reviews over at yelp, lol.. was really doubtful at first and was quite surprised when i reach. big room with 2 double beds as well, overlooking the mirage waterfall show.

There ll be no toll if you choose to just take HWY 1 or HWY 1into HWY 5. I think there's an alternative route that has toll from LA to San Diego.

wanted to ask if it makes sense to drive to Disney and back or take a shuttle with wife.

$105 for renting a car (incl of park, rent and valet).
$70 for shuttle for 2.

u staying hollywood area? im staying disney area, had the same headache with u as well but the opposite way. thinking of either shuttle or drive to universal, but walked past dollar today near my hotel, enquired the price and think its not too ex so rented one.

tried left hand drive today, feels weird and too many cars and too many exits etc, will tend to get really blur, so u can factor in all these as well. if can, i will prefer to shuttle but too bad LA is way too big :(

feels like a total noob. cos we are all used to right hand drive in sg. doing left hand, u dunno the place, u need to see the gps, u need to think and there are many cars in LA, unless u are super zhai and can adapt easily. in their freeway its easier, but small roads might be abit harder.

some junctions no traffic lights, all based on courtesy. diff states diff patterns of driving. driving in anaheim is slightly easier, traffic lighter. or maybe its just me. left hand drive needs abit of time to get the hang of it.

basically i jus feel daytime driving still ok, night time abit harder. the marking on the lanes is not as clear as ours. small roads no traffic junctions still ok, most pple are courteous. LA traffic is alot more than anaheim, jus be more careful. the peeps drive quite fast over there.

but i can say its really one hell of an experience, not for the weak heart. :p

no lights? it is not base on courtesy.
there are rules, U did not read the driving handbook?
http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/driver-handbook.php

it is not that bad in LA, states speed limit is above what we used to.
roads are not well maintain, fewer lamps on the street.

I will put 110% concentration and drive very very carefully and I'd ask my wife not to rest. Long long straight roads are still ok

I'd be driving from SF to Big Sur and back
Vegas to GC and back ( not same day )
San Diego = > Anaheim => LA

Normally do you avoid the peak hr when you drive? When ppl go to work and ppl knock off esp in LA/SF?

wonder if we could get the hang of left-hand driving via games like GTA or other driving games which offer a LHD car... :D
