You can get a bus ticket to Sapa, 6hours from Hanoi, spend 1-2 nights there. From Sapa, take a 2 hours ride to Lao Cai, and your can walk to Vietnam - China border. You can spend a night in china, or take train to Kunming or more. If you decide to head back to Hanoi, you may spend 1-2 days there to the hoan kiem lake, and for me I catch a movie at vincom royal city, and spend a afternoon there, avoiding the High temp and hostilities...

If you are looking for 1 day comfort... the rate at China hekou is 150 or 300 rmb, the later for a night. No worry, they will come to you at your hotel lobby.

Taxi in hekou is cheap... 10rmb to Vietnam city, 20rmb to the railway station.

Hekou is more vibrant than Lao Cai.

what did you do? :s22:

It's not what I did, it's the many of their locals dislike the Chinese ... no matter how low profile I am, and even though I trying hard speaking in Vietnamese to them... to tell you more later..

Perhaps in Hanoi, they would rather that you speak in English than broken Vietnamese.

Here're some of the hostilities i had encountered...

a. at times while walking on side walk, suddenly someone will intentionally spill water.. ice .. or remaining drinks infront of you...

b. once a dog was barking at me, instead of getting the dog to stop, the owner encouraged the dog to continue to bark at me.

c. at my hostel, the reception girl deliberately refuse to pass me the locker key, even though she had agreed to do so. My room is on the fifth floor. I collected the key myself after 3 hours wait, lugging my expensive items while proceeding my dinner.

d. At Big C supermart, i stand at the weighing counter for a while, and only i uttered xin loi, he entertained me. And once i say it in English, he said he don't speak English and turn around.

e. My first arrival at Hanoi, i went to a side walk stall for breakfast, the lady refused to serve. So fed up i bought a ticket to Sapa.

f. And of course all the high charges for motorcycle/bus rides..

g there are of courses instances whereby their people had done well, how ever sadly mostly notvin Hanoi.

Thinking to go Hanoi during Christmas longweekend.

Anything to do/see there? Go old quarter walk walk? And that giant lake?

Didn't go to that giant lake, but another buzzing smaller lake, hoan kiem, they closed the nearby roads on weekends. The closed pedestrian roads are busy with many arts activities... and games...

The nearby church has a little procession whereby the believers going round the church singing hymns..

However all these are not happening on weekdays.

just bought tickets for 27 dec, 197 from tiger. :(

don't know cheap or not

It's the holiday prices. Especially you booked so late. I booked my xmas Eve ticket to HCM in March using tigerair standard chartered free ticket. Only last 2 weeks then booked the returning ticket and the price jumped to from usd 52 to USD 70. Procrastinated too much and the prices keep climbing.

True. In their history there were so many waves of Chinese migration to north vietnam forming the Ly 里,Tran 陈,Ho 胡 dynasties. The viet identity was just formed very recently. In fact during the Nguyen dynasty, they claimed themselves 汉人 and looked down on newcomers who they called 清人 and 明鄉人

Ya, lesson learnt. Friends last minute want to go for a holiday.

How do y'all keep track of airline promotion?
