Viettel is owned by the Ministry of Defence and thus the Vietnamese army. It's the market leader in Vietnam with about 40% of all customers on its network.
It has the best coverage in remote places even on 3G. 4G/LTE was officially launched in April 2017 on 1800 MHz over 25,000 base stations to almost 95% of the country giving it the best 4G coverage for now.

As prices don't differ so much between the 3 major operators, Viettel should be your first choice when you are going to rural areas.

as stated on http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Vietnam

Hello, I am considering a trip to vietnam in June. It'll be my first visit there so not sure what to expect. Hopefully some shifu here can give some suggestions.

Read that weather will be quite bad with lots of rain in june. is it still recommended to go hanoi (northern vietnam)? was considering the touristy halong bay and sapa area. or are there other areas to consider for a first timer in Vietnam. (more interested in culture and scenery than shopping)

Thanks!

june will usually be quite hot and dry. later in the summer, hanoi will get thunderstorms in the late afternoons, sometimes strong enough to fall trees and cut powerlines. if you are okay with the heat, then go for it. hanoi and the countryside will be very beautiful with lotus in full bloom.

Hello guys...

We are planning a trip to Sapa and Halong Bay. Some helpful and tips needed from you.

1. Any recommendation for places to stay in Sapa for 2 days 2 nights. Was thinking if to take overnight train from Hanoi or take coach in daytime. Arriving on Friday 6pm.

2. Halong Bay 3 days 2 nights. Stay in Halong Bay or Cat Ba island?

Many thanks and have a wonderful weekend ahead.

2. - 2 day 1 night Halong Cruise. When your cruise end, ask your guide about Cat Ba island, then from there go to Cat Ba Island. That's what I did last week, I stay at Monkey Island. Note getting to Monkey Island or some other beach island resort at Cat Ba island is freaking challenging. It's like an island within an island. Also beware of those tauts or scammers . Once you reach Cat Ba Island, go to the "official" Cat Ba Tourist booth that is just outside the main Cat Ba Harbour,( Note Cat Ba have many harbour) then ask around. The friendly guy at the booth will be more willing to help you.

Monkey Island Resort is cool, there's less than 20 ppl and kind of secluded, not touristy at all. But keep in mind the aircon only start working at 9pm. :D , the lock all cranky and the shower sucks. It seem the whole island is generated by some random boat. And on top of that it's kind of expensive ( US$85 per night ) Definately won't recomend those fussy kind. ( those Westerners backpackers love it though )

Some tips for people going to Vietnam.

1. Buy the pure data SIM Card & use UBER or GRAB all the time. Ignore those taxi or motor uncle mfckers cheaters charge you triple the original price. Preferably make sure yr uber or grab is automatically charge to your credit card - super convenient.

2. Vietnam is one of the few places where online is more expensive than checking in - be it hotels or tour guides. They need to sell and they see you as potential customer so they will try their best to get you. I booked the halong bay online and found out it is around US$60 more expensive than those ppl who just go there. Same goes for the resort, I was quoted US$79 for one night, I check online the cheapest rate is US$88.

3. Get a good powerbank. **** those Prudential powerbank

4.Ignore those ppl who taut unless you really want their stuff. They sell items double or triple than what you get at the shop.

5. Haggle like a bitch.

6. Note when I withdraw money i get charged $5 C-SC whatever that mean.

7. Haagan Dasz ice cream is super cheap.

8. Their tap water is not clean.

9. Dogs everywhere in Hanoi but no cat.

10. 9 out of 10 of their massage parlour are surprisingly clean. :s22::s22::s22::s22:

11. Traffic is super chaotic.

Vietnamese are very nice people so if one of them do some kind of funny business, these guy will be blackmark but still watch your belongings.

Will I go to Vietnam again?

It's a nice place with nice people, one of my key moments is riding those crazy motorcycle whizzing to any location, going against the traffic, it was fun yeah... but will i go there again?
Answer is no.

The beaches of Malaysia are better and what you can get in Vietnam you can get anywhere in Malaysia or Indonesia except for the food or girls.

Stay hotel would be good...
3* hotel about 40+sgd per nite for two can get already ...
if u r really tight in budget, there is also 30+ sgd per nite ...
most hcmc 3* hotel are on average 40 to 60 rooms ...
breakfast buffet, better to look at tripadvisor pic, cox most 3* hotel buffet is like mixed economy rice type ... fried vege, meat, rice, porridge ... some better hotel buffets lan lan, le duy, vien dong, blue diamond, lan lan 2 , elios etc ...

Normally most people would go district one ... near ben thanh market area.
if u wan day tour, go sinh cafe ... quite cheap ...
the cucu tunnel tour is about 5sgd.
the one day mekong delta with transport and one lunch meal (like those batam trip) is about 12sgd per person ...
there is one more mekong delta tour also, that one is more expensive ...

district 5 is the chinatown area

hcmc not much shopping mall like bangkok ...
when eating zi cha at ben thanh market area, check your bill ...
they would confirm add in extra things to your bill. so ask for the receipt to check ...
