Hi guys,
thinking of visiting HCMC early jan for a short getaway (around 5 days 4 night) before uni starts again, would like to ask some questions. Group of 3-4 friends. We intend to spend a few days at HCMC.
I've been to HCMC before, visited places like Cuchi tunnel, Ben thanh market, Can Tho Mekong Delta floating market, Reunification Palace etc.

Interested in visiting other parts of Vietnam, any recommendations in consideration of the above?
1. Thinking of visiting either Dalat/Nha Trang then return to HCMC
2. Also, what attractions/activities to do at Dalat/Nha Trang?
3. Transportation from HCMC to Dalat/Nha Trang
4. Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

for da lat, you can either fly or take bus. I took phuong trang bus from hcmc 12usd or so (book and depart / arrive from de tham Street, which is perpendicular to both bui vien and pham ngu lao street) daytime bus takes 8 hours, I heard overnight will be 5 hours. at da lat bus station, phuong trang will provide you transport to your hotel in da lat for free. in da lat a popular tour will be easy rider which are motor bike tours. seeing that you have a group, you may go for a car tour instead (can book from your accommodation or any of the several travel agencies) probably around 25 usd per person. for mine it brought me to some flower or fruit farm, silk factory, cricket factory, elephant waterfalls, some temple and crazy house (and maybe a couple of other attractions that I forgot) for a full day tour. a big plus in da lat would be the lovely weather. please feel free to pm me if you would like to ask further.

Im trying to plan either BKK or HCMC for 3d2n short trip during dec/jan. Not sure if its sufficient.

Day 1
- Afternoon flight to HCMC
- Cab to hotel (probably staying around ben thanh market)
- Book 1 day tour for next morning
- Visit Ben Thanh Night Market

Day 2
- Day tour (Cu chi tunnel, War remnants, Presidential Palace and Notre Dame)
* is chinatown (cho binh tay market) worth visit?
- Saigon Square/Ben Thanh market

Day 3
- Nearest shopping mall or maybe chinatown if worth it
- Afternoon RTS

Any comments?

Cu Chi tunnel will take up half a day. Trip starts from 8am onwards.

War remnants, Presidential Palace and Notre Dame within walking distance (10-15 min walk) but will take you around 1 hr at least to finish viewing the place except for notre dame maybe in 30 mins. Also take note these places are close during their "extended" lunch hours.

Saigon square and ben thanh market are 5 mins apart .Open 9am till 6pm. Stalls start closing at 5pm.

Cho Binh Tay is good only if you are buying bulks.. most stall dont sell single pieces. And it is a good 20-30 min taxi ride from D1.

My shopaholic friends regretted not allocating more time for Saigon Square. They had only half a day planned for it.

Hi guys, any advise for solo travellers? i plan to visit hcm and hanoi. is it safe? i heard it can get dangerous at night esp in hanoi??

vietnam is voted as among the safer destinations for solo travellers. the north is more conservative than the south and therefore hanoi is no way less safe than hcmc. having said that there is always petty theft so do exercise precautions and be careful when going to drinking places late at night as drunks might cause problems.

Exchange rate at HAN airport

On Friday was at HAN. After arrivals there are only two exchange offices. In one place they had SIN/VND to 15115 (!) - 4% less than exchange rate. On second, it was 15550 but also there was '10 min lunch break' sign. That '10 min' was more than 30 min waiting and at the end I ended up taking money from ATM.

Please note that ATMs have fee and some of them have less fees than others. AgriBank's fee is just US 1$, however other banks change US $2.5-$3 per withdrawal. Also note that max amount can be limited - in one ATM it was 1.5m for example.

check out a travel agent called hoi an express. they run frequent shuttle service between hoi an and danang airport. i took a shuttle from hoi an to danang airport early this year. paid around 110k. it was on time and they are quite professional by vn standards. they said if i were to come back, i can contact them in advance to book. but i think they have a counter at airport so advance booking may not be necessary unless peak.

What about Hoi An to Hue? Any transport recommendation?

recommend the open buses. your hotel in hoi an should be able to arrange for you. i took camel bus from hue to hoi an and it was a sleeper bus. free wifi onboard. pretty clean and good. but other people had bad experience.

if you are adventurous, you could try easyrider.
