Am in Beijing now. Tied Mastercard to WeChat without any hassle…. No verification was needed.

No longer ‘Have money will travel’ but have WeChat will travel.
No need to send the qr code to your friend and ask them to verify for your?

Very easy and fast , although it states review takes 1 to 3 days after submission but the appproved came in about 5 mins.

All notices thru the WeChat Pay platform.

This is very helpful as my passport expires next year thanks! Did you try to update Alipay too? Hope both platforms will be hassle free and then my bank cards will be too.

Yes i updated Alipay while i was in Sg in April while Not Wechat as there wasn't this function than.

Now WeChat has it too,

I first went to the bank to update my record with the new passport than i updated the WechatPay .

Not sure whether Wechat Pay data are linked to the bank .( My guess it is not since it took them less than 5 mins to approved it ).

Most likely it is checked against previous passport details .

Anyway just FYI everything is good all payment whether Alipay or Wechat Pay have been smooth .

So was the sequence:
1) update Alipay
2) update bank in China
3) update WeChat Pay?

prior to updating the bank, were you able to use Alipay (with underlying China bank card)? That’s my worry updating Alipay and WechatPay before getting to China to update the Chinese banks.

1) Update in April - Alipay as they had the function in the apps . WeChat pay -No function for this found on apps

2) In Oct , went to all the China bank to update my new passport

3) New passport all updated with the China banks than , I updated the latest version of WeChat Pay and found that they now have this updating of new passport feature and did accordingly .

Approval also approved in 3 mins even though the notice from apps stated that it takes between 1-3days .

I didn't use any of them until I did the updating.

My guess is you can use it even before updating the new passport as long as your old passport expiry date is still valid .

In my opinion I don't think it will
affect any transaction as i believe Alipay and Wechat pay check the new passport vs your old passport in their system rather than the bank;

that you are the same person except the number is changed eg the NRIC number is the same .( Plus facial ID).

My passport expired in 2020 and due to that, my Chinese bank account linked to Alipay also suspended/frozen. I couldn’t use Alipay (China) till my bank account has the new passport details updated.

Ok great thanks! My passport expires in Oct 2025. I intend to apply for renewal in January and will be in Shanghai in March to do all the updating. Don’t think there will be a problem then.

I updated my Passport details in following sequence:

(1) China mobile service centre (done during recent Sep trip)
(2) China banks (done during recent Sep trip)

(3) Wechat Pay (linked to China banks)
I have not updated this yet. My old passport per Wechat records was supposed to expire on Apr 2025. I intend to update only in early 2025, after I have made my once-a-year transfer from Wechat wallet to a relative in China.

I have 2 China bank a/c, BOC & ICBC.
I discovered recently that I can check their balances thru Wechat App 公众号.
Steps (roughly):
(1) In Wechat App, search for 中国银行微银行 or/ and 中国工商银行客户服务
(2) Activate the linkage to your BOC/ ICBC Debit Card No. via a one-time authentication, via the PIN No. to your Debit Cards.

I find this convenient for me to check transactions when I was travelling in China, without the need to do so via their banking app (apk).

Updated my details for WeChatPay & Alipay without updating China bank accounts, and appoved within moments IIRC.

Yes, can do that. It solve the problem in case you cannot install The Bank APK on your phone.
Actually WeChat is super App, its mini program can perform almost all functions of any apps. That Why Apple is unhappy about that.
Yes, that's great as Google is actively flagging side loaded APK, i.e. China Bank Apps as malicious etc. with the Google Play Scan.

Deposit hard cash (RMB) at the china bank itself?

yes that is what i Do .

As a Foreigner I don't think you can TT RMB into your account .

You can TT foreign currency into you China bank acct if it is a multi currency account ,
Once that money is in , you have to bring your necessary documents to the bank counters and do the FX at the teller .

This is what I shall do when the existing RMB in my China bank a/c start to deplete:

(1) Hand-carry RMB notes (limit: <= RMB20,000 per person) from SG to China, & deposit via at the China bank ATM
Note: there's daily limit of deposit & withdrawal at China ATM - can't remember whether it's RMB3,000 or RMB5,000 or ???

(2) Withdraw RMB notes from BOC/ ICBC ATM using Trust bank Debit Card, & then deposit into my BOC or ICBC AC at the same ATM. Trust bank currently does not charge any ATM withdrawal fees, but I'm not sure whether the China banks will charge or not.

For me I have local ICBC dual currency debit account opened in Sg. So I just use FX convert sg dollars to RMB and park in my RMB account. Normally when the rates are good, I buy more RMB and keep in FD.

Then once in China, go to their ICBC atm, use sg ICBC debit card, withdraw cash, then insert China ICBC card, deposit the same amount again.

Note that your transaction limit has to be adjusted accordingly. Eg S$2000 withdrawal limit in my union pay debit card is the same as $2000 RMB. Also activate allow overseas transactions.

With that, I quickly top up my WeChat China ewallet, keep some balance for Alipay deduction.
I only keep around $2k RMB in Chinese bank account to avoid the fall below fees.
