if i did not read his reply wrongly... you cannot put money into the ewallet...

but u can still pay for things when you have a youtrip card link to the app
There are ways to put money into the wallets. I have money in my Alipay and WeChat wallets.

You can't top up/transfer money from your cards to the wallets.

An interesting point on WeChat wallet is that in the past I could not accept hongbao and any 补贴from merchants that would deposit into the WeChat wallet. In early July (this is before I opened my mainland bank accounts so there were only the usual Wise and other intl CC tied to my WeChat), a merchant sent me a packet for RMB120 being a rebate for a 618 promotion. I did manage to receive it into my wallet AND subsequently successfully used it for a purchase on Xiaohongshu for RMB115.

I don’t know if this experience is part of the drive to make it easier for foreigners but I did manage to receive into my wallet and use the credit in it.
now is much easier to open acc in china ...frd just spent 2h n open 1 in ABC last wk

so with acc + mainland # whch u already got else how u open acc haha , u can do most things liao

anyone tried the tour card yet?

Tour Card is a service provided by Bank of Shanghai. It is tailored for overseas travellers to enjoy the mobile payment across Chinese mainland simply wiht their overseas bank cards.

Seems like its similiar to the Alipay tour version where you transfer $$ from your linked cc and any balance can be refunded. Validity is 90 days upon activation.

I've not progressed beyond anything yet.

Oh yeah, there is a 5% surcharge for transferring money into your wechat account.

I am now in China. WeChat pay does not work well at street vendor. Error message like foreign transaction not activated. Alipay seems to be better.

Edit: Just realised I didn’t activate allow overseas transactions for my card link to wechat. Silly me!

do you link to trust debit card or credit card? and do you use sg number or china number?

I used Trust cc and paired with local numbers. It works fine after you upload your passport details.
Make sure you activate allow overseas transactions.

ok thanks for your reply. I usually don't make any plans whenever I go overseas but China makes me nervous because they firewall everything and the payment system is also very different.

Just came back from China. WeChat is necessary for using many online ordering systems. MasterCard and VISA once linked with WeChat Pay works flawlessly. Personally, I prefer using Alipay to WeChat Pay, but you absolutely need both.
Agree - some merchants only have WeChat code. I would also add, when I was in Shanghai last month, some taxi drivers / merchants expressed an outright preference for WeChat pay. I was curious and asked why - they said they were boycotting Alipay due to the “ungrateful person at the top who says the wrong things”!

WeChat Is better cos you can scan QR code and add the service provider in the form of mini app. Need to scroll down on the main page.

I use WeChat most of the time. Just that it doesn’t have a widget to add to my iphone. Alipay works fine.

Am in Beijing now. Tied Mastercard to WeChat without any hassle…. No verification was needed.

No longer ‘Have money will travel’ but have WeChat will travel.

In terms of qr code payment, dbs paylah really cmi. Too slow and laggy
