a min wage will "legalised" the lowering of wages to unsustainable levels.

right now, employers can discuss pay with their staff. Works on a PR basis, cause there's no hard and fast rule for pay matters.

With a new min wage ruling, employers have the "backing" of the law to offer the lowest wage possible, as long as it is higher than the min wages.

And we all know the min wages will not be high.
daft .

those who say put a cap on max wages, have higher tax brackets, you risk the possibility of shooting yourself in your own leg.

I wouldn't want to work hard, earn more $, just to have it being capped or taxed.

Unless you are telling me you have no confidence of earning that much in your lifetime.

dont need maximum wage, but a very progressive taxation system. ie France taxes 50% on the rich.

these tax should then be returned back to the society as welfare, such as medical, education

lol, those are ideals which can never happen in SG, if the rich here are taxed equally bad as their own country, whats the incentive of investing and putting their funds in sg? if they were to pull out, u see how our economy suffer.

This situation is created by our short sighted leaders, to make sg an ideal place for the rich to live in, but of course, they would need to have substantial amount of poor ppl to serve the rich.

Capitalist governance, everybody cannot be rich at the same time.:s13:

There are 2 types of CEO - a salaried employee, or a founder/owner of the company

but obviously as a CEO, he would be in a great position to control his changes regardless of him being a salaried or founder.

This does not work for the lower tiers of staff
dont forget the lower staff contributes to the company. by paying at minimum wage for a job that asks for higher wage results in low productivity and high turn over. if you are a CEO and think this way, forget about being a CEO

Wouldnt work.

Not because of the cost of business . But our core mentality dont allow.
Min wage applies to a population that wants fairness. Sinkies always out to jiak everyone. Want to Get stuff free dont pay.

You see sinkies going to jb to hoot cheap stuff (poor people cant go jb to buy so much) and not support local business.

I'm surrounded with People like.chriskoh think want high pay so must kick out pinoy and tiong pmet but poor sinkies at bottom should continue to suffer from competition

If you dont pay others how are they going to get paid well enough to use yout business and pay you???

Min wage and their supporters to me is nothing more than lip service .

When your population is going to support min wage as far as to just stop before hurting their pockets..... who foots the bill? Businesses?? Govt???

ups for u dude! nicely said.

for minium wage law to be effective.

i would say on a per hour basics at 6-7 sgd.

this would be good for the cleaners, part timers but not so for white collars and blue collar since minimum wage law wont affect them

Like wad someone mentioned, a progressive tax on the rich is ok. But that means taxing more on pappies too so it wun occur

Um. Do you have some sort of source or backing for what you are claiming?

Minimum wage is not something new that has just been pulled out of someone's behind.
While there are arguments for and against minimum wage (a quick google will show you many), I have yet to hear the one you listed below.

if jobs are readily available. yes, we can argue that our job requires us to be paid above the measly minimum wage, but take a look around, degree holders everywhere, from every neighbouring country.

If u argue with the employers saying u deserved to be paid higher, be prepared to say bye bye to ur job, because tons of ppl r waiting to replace u.

blame it on the high influx of foreigners for pmet level:s13:

u dont forget the circular flow of economy, even if you are smart and clever to earn millions, what you are earning is the poor's money. if you keep everything to yourself and not give back to the society, a well being sucked dry is as good as nothing.

I don't understand this. What is stopping them from giving these 'lower wages' now?

Competition?

How does having a minimum wage get rid of this competition?

If they give lower wage, people would not work for them and companies do need human resource. If there is a minimum wage, people who give lower than the minimum wage would have to increase their wages and icnrease their business costs BUT at the same time, companies who have gave more than the minimum wage can reduce it to just the minimum wage since it is deemed by the govt that we can survive with this minimum wage.

Which one do you prefer now? to be much much more than the minimum wage or just the minimum wage?

high turn over? that will happen everywhere

the min wage rule applies across all industries and sectors.

If i as the CEO uses the min wage system to depress the wages even lower, how do you assume the other CEOs won't?

Based on human kindness and compassion?

So, where will employees turn to? Company A? B? C? D? all giving the same wages.

Seriously, if you increase the wage of a cleaner at hawker center, your price of food also increase by folds...
Maybe you might say targeted group, if a worker at a food factory get a minimum wage, then the end user eventually get the effect...
Really not a good law...
In singapore, it is not practical...
This will also mean that pinoy and AT will earn more...

It is basically capitalism. Business owners would want to pay as much less as possible. It's their business. Of course, they would want more money from their business. There are also no source or facts backing that minimum wage is effective except that there are countries doing it.

this will indeed affect my future earnings, but it will affect the poor much more.

I can always earn money from many other markets and people.

But if collectively, the bosses don't let the money flow back, the employees suffer the most.

Bosses will always still have accumulated wealth to sustain. Just as you said, I suck the well dry, but I have collected all the water that well has to offer.

So who will die off first?

i think right now we are already on the equilibrium, the only time when we are off the charts is when u see riots and strikes on the streets.

do you think jobs for degree holder can even be paid at minimum wage and that degree holders at neighbouring country will be enticed by minimum wage? look at the s pass and e pass holders, their minimum wage is way higher than the general minimum wage for low skilled/level workers we are talking about here
