Hi all,

am a 100% noob when it comes to wine (red/ White). Thinking of getting some for coming friends gathering. Anyone has any recommendations on good & value for money wine that I can get/ buy from? Are those sold in NTUC/ Cold Storage good enough for such occasions? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Regards.

Think I was too slow, most of the wines I wanted in Rd 1 were sold out. Oh well... yeah nothing much enticing for Rd 2.

Cool, going on a weekend getaway? Or is it the retreat you mentioned.
Yeah, I wish supermarkets could carry some of the better ranges of the big name labels. Always thought their 'variety' to be something of an oxymoron, more basic, cookie-cutter labels from the same conglomerates and blends. I mean, how many types of South Australia Shirazes do you need on the shelf?

At th small DFS at the tanah merah ferry terminal to bintan. Prices are not bad. What's worth getting is the Jacobs creek Riesling steingarten, from Eden valley.

This is not the usual mass produced Jacobs creek wines but rather their higher end cuvée. Expect a slatey mineral style of Riesling of high quality. At $41 it's pretty good.

Thanks for sharing your notes, I went on Sunday but no more tasting...

Have tried quite a few Moscatos and found the ones from Asti far and away the best. Though many friends and colleagues still like their Brown Brothers - basic bottling and the orange muscat one - a bit too flabby for me.Will also be keen to try the Jaillance ikileo mentioned.

I've tried the Saracco before and it's pretty good. It's one of the real solid, specialist Moscato producers from the Castiglione Tinella hotbed in Asti. I'm curious about the Pio Cesare - have a bottle of the 2010 but have yet to open it.

Here are some of the better ones I've tried, with a excellent balance of sweetness and acidity:

Marchesi di Barolo Zagara (Jason's & Top Wines) - may be a bit sweet for some but I find it fragrant and fresh
Michele Chiarlo Nivole (Isetan Scotts, Meidi-Ya Enoteca, Monopole) - really spritzy and with some unique qualities, like orange peel. Or maybe it's just that big orange on the label!
G. D. Vajra (Straits Wine) - Well-balanced and enjoyable Moscato. Resaonably priced to boot, and also available in half-bottles.

Had quite a lot of wines over the weekend! Will try to pen down some of my thoughts and notes on the wines.

3. Pio Cesare Moscato D Asti 2011

Continued with the tasting flight. The best of the lot (my favourite, at least). Strong hints of tropical fruits on the nose. A small sip turned my partner a little crazy. Very refreshing, and lots of fruits on the mouth as well. Nice long finish and after taste. A very good MDA imho.

4. Paolo Saracco 2011

My next favourite after the Pio Ceasare. This one has very strong notes of lychee and longan on the nose. The nose lingers for a long time. A sip on the wine tells me this is pretty complex, several sweet tastes and sensations battling out at the same time, yet well orchestrated into a nice harmony. Beautiful finish. I was stunned for a moment there. Will buy more of this wine.

To be continued..

drank my 09 Muscadet (2009 Domaine Pierre de la Grange (Luneau-Papin) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Le "L" d'Or) at Jumbo seafood on saturday evening for my sister's birthday.

Yet to open my bottle but tried this Muscadet from Wine Connection:
Domaine du Bois-Malinge Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie

Pretty nice, with nice freshness, lemon and saline characteristics. An enjoyable wine in our climate and I think this will make a good house white at many bistros and restaurants. So far I've only seen it (Muscadet) on the Taratata Bistrot wine list though.

gonna watch Dark Knight Rises in the theaters soon! which wine should I watch it with?
something dark coloured but 'rises' to the occasion? haven't figured it out yet.

Probably something intense, and at the same time brooding and depressing. Is there any such wine haha? Something young and tannic, but with sufficient complexity off the bat.

Hmm, any budget in mind? If you want a diverse selection, Isetan Scott's supermarket has an excellent selection of different regions and producers.
Better chance of getting something unique and probably something not many people have drank before.

FairPrice Finest has some good deals this weekend on their Alkoomi (Frankland River, Australia) and Simi (Alexander Valley, California) wines. If you're going one red one white you can try the Alkoomi Riesling ($25.50) and Simi Landslide Cabernet ($39).

Do let us know your requirements and expectations so that we can better advise.

Heh, I think a food-wine pairing has been attempted before by some of our local wine professionals. The deadly pairing may have more to do with hard liquor rather than grape wine I think...

Wonder what sugar bomb sweet wine will be able to match the durian?

Most decent wine shops have banquet services, including delivery and sometimes unconsumed bottles can be returned.

For example, this is the offering from Crystal Wines: http://www.crystalwines.com/images/form/Wedding Banquet List.pdf

You can try Cornerstone too, they carry many good labels, if you have the budget, but also their budget house wines as well.

Think it depends on your budget and requirements. Are you looking to serve a specific style of wine, or as long as have booze can liao?

A recent wedding had this supermarket wine, simply labeled Californian Red, don't even know the varietals involved, at around $11 per bottle. Pretty drinkable actually.

I got married before I became a wine geek, and we served Yellow Tail Cabernet at our banquet. Got quite a few compliments on the wine heh..

to be honest, i just wanna enjoy a good durian by itself, i don't always have to pair everything with wine.

Hey! I got the Yellow Tail Cabernet at my wedding too! I tried several wines before deciding on it.. Quite a good all rounder, can go pretty well with our chinese cuisine.. True, quite a lot of guests liked the wine..

What a coincidence.. :)

You may want to try the 1855 bottle shop.. The 111 Somerset outlet allows you to bring food in provided you order a bottle of wine from them.. The Toa Payoh outlet has an attached restaurant that serves pretty decent finger food.. You can order the wine and bring it into the restaurant..

This weekend they have 2 wines for tasting: a CSC blend from South Africa and a Shiraz from South Australia.. Not too bad..

Yes i think the Moscatos, especially the Italian D Astis do fit in our hot and humid weather very nicely.. Every time my MIL comes for a visit I will open a bottle and I think the ladies like it very much too..

I find the Moscatos from Australia a bit on the sweet side and not much of character.. The Italians tend to be more flavourful and more variety of sensations on the tastebud..

was checking out wine today at Isetan, Tott, Straits Wines & 1855 haha...

didn't buy anything!

Tott is having sale sale on some italian wines so that's worth checking out

Straits Wines is having some big clearance sale ranging from 20%-40% off retail price. only at the 6th avenue and east coast outlet.

Isetan i got to sample a Riversanti Moscato d'Asti that was on promo. $30.90. it's got the standard M d'A flavours, quite rich and slightly weighty on the palate compared to most M d'As i've had before. if u like a richer heavier style of moscato, then this would work for you.

Cool, I think when you are looking for a banquet wine, you need to get something universally accessible and affordable. Which is where YT comes in. My dad picked it though, at the recommendation of his friend.

I was there on Sat too, in the evening. Got myself an '07 Caparzo La Caduta Rosso Montalcino, a single vineyard Rosso. I like the '07 vintage in most of Tuscany. But though I feel Toque has a great collection of Spanish and Italian wines, I feel their regular retail prices are on the high side, and the sale offers just bring them down to 'normal' price points compared to other distributors.
