Thanks for that . I will go there to purchase . Got to find the shop first
Whenever I go there,I'll sure whack their merchandise. It's not overly expensive since it is an Osaka company that makes outdoor equipment and apparels for the locals. Shinjuku station south exit has a branch which have English speaking staff. Alternatively, another branch at Okachimachi station near Ueno. Whichever is more convenient.

4-10 in tokyo manageable...
get a pair of boots, uniqlo ultra light down, a heat tech long sleeve inside and maybe a heat tech vest. plus tight fit jeans. and add a scarve and beannie, you're good to go. make sure your clothes are snug fitting to ensure maximum insulation.

if it's tummy, wind will travel up :p just kidding

i find it a chore to bring bulky northface or coats, the uniqlo ultra light down is just so handy and lightweight and takes up as much space as my toiletries bag lol.

Is Montbell better than Uniqlo. I have seen the uniqlo ULD, really hin and light. Is Montbell's the same? And are ULDs considered windproof?

Mont bell makes not only apparels which is higher grade than uniqlo, but also makes other outdoor camping gear like sleeping bag, tents, water bottles, backpacks, trekking shoes, etc.

montbell will have their own lightweight version of down jacket since they specialise in camping/mountaineering equipment. and they probably have something that is lighter, thinner and warmer than uniqlo, because such factors are impt for long hikes. but of coz price is going to be a lot more as well. so have to see if u need such quality stuff, or can make do with uniqlo

the uniqlo ULD i have is not windproof or waterproof. but i bought it a few years ago, so dunno if the new range is still the same.

for fully waterproof down jackets, look for companies that does ski and snowboarding clothing, or you can look for professional outdoor gear companies.

most down jackets are not waterproof. waterproof down jackets are mostly very bulky and impossible to pack small.

but all down jackets are windproof. the fabric used must have a very tight weave that prevents down from escaping the clothing. the only issue is that because of the stitching pattern for the baffles, those stitches may allow small amount of wind to pass through. the small amount translate to heat loss from the jacket.

montbell has many nice down jackets. but you are looking at paying twice the price of uniqlo's.

and btw, uniqlo having their sale now. their ULD is back at 4990 yen. you can buy 3 uniqlo jacket for the price of the cheapest montbell. anyway i have jackets from both these companies, so they both have their uses.

and if you really want waterproof, then you are better off with a synthetic insulation like primaloft. many fashion companies have down jackets in this synthetic material - zara, gap, etc. synthetic insulation retains heat better even when damp. and they are usually cheaper. the downsides are that they do not pack small, and they are not as durable.

Question. If I am going Shirakawago in feb, assuming ave temp of -5 to 5c, and -5 is probably in the middle of night when you are indoor, then would wearing Uniqlo (many branches here and cheaper) heattech inside, followed by fleece sweater and outside is ULD, 3 layers enough? If not, add another what layer is advsable?

And bottom can just heattech pants inside and jeans outside?
