I should probably rephrase.
I wish the footwear / men's dress shoe scene was as developed as Japan.
We need to wear all kinds of shoes, year round.
So climate isn't an excuse.

Anyway, as such, we have a long way to go.

Yeah that's definitely true!

Even in SG, the Jap expats I see on the MRT usually wear pretty spiffy shoes.

Was at Lusso today and saw yanko, fine piece of foot wear and it set me thinking. What do you get from a consumer perspective for the increasing range (more pricey), the improved quality but what does it really mean when wearing them?

I had a pair of LLYR wholecut(very pleased with them), Yanko are double the price, Enzo 4 times.

Any expert can help to articulate the differences? Thanks

Would like to know more myself. Admittedly am a shoe noob still.

Have only a few pairs worth mentioning, Carmina double monks, Yanko full brogues and a penny loafer from Llyr.

In terms of wearing experience, the carmina wears very 'hard' and rigid even after a few wears to break it in. Perhaps my foot is not suitable for the simpson last?

I'd like to know more about meermin, prices seem very attractive... How's the quality of it? Seems to be a pretty quiet brand.. Havent been able to see one in flesh so not sure if it will be worth taking the risk of ordering online...

Simpson last you gotta size up half size from Rain/Forest last.
Carmina leather is supple. Doesn't take long to break in compare to LLYR definitely.
Probably the fit isn't right.
Meermin are nowhere near the quality of Carmina in terms of leather and make.
That's my opinion.. But they are damn decent for the price. Yet there are Carlos Santos you could look at.. Which probably bro AIAD can speak more for.

Hi All,

Just wanted to say thank you for infecting me with the shoe bug. Now when I look down at my loakes or meermins I think of what Thundermarch says "i even remove them from my instagram"

Couple of questions I hope to get some clarification on:

1. When I am checking out at Skoab website i.e. the page where you enter your credit card details, it shows the price of the shoe and taxes. Is it safe to assume what I'll be charge is just the price of the shoe?

2. Is the pricing on Carmina at Skoab make it competitive from a price to quality ratio compared to Yanko at Lusso?

3. Will there be a year end / christmas sale on these websites?

Many thanks!

TM only removed Meermins from his Insta lah ... Loake 1880s are still the recommended first pair of fine shoes from many of us ...

My take:
1) once you have updated your address, VAT will be removed from the order
2) IMO, Carmina is marginally better than Yanko. Yes, Yanko represents a better value propostion. But one should also be mindful of the shape of the lasts, and whether you like it.
3) Black Friday sales is coming up. Can be 20% to 30% at some places, but no guarantee of availability also.

What size are you on for the carminas?

UK 8.5
Rain last.

@callmechamp
With regards to the earlier quote regarding Meermin.
To be fair, I know of some people who have had good experiences with their Meermin shoes. I guess it's hit and miss.
Generally, especially for shoes that cost less, I reserve my negative comments until I've bought more pairs of them and worn them. For Meermin, for me at least, they were 5 pairs out of 5 bad. Bordering on crap. So I've more or less made up my mind about them.
I've owned a pair of Loakes and found them to be decent and acceptable for the price.

i see..worth the extra $?

As with all things in life, the incremental utility is always going to be more costly. Your mileage may vary, but I liked most of my shoes regardless of who i got it from.

I tend to choose designs which i don't have. And i now buy (at the price point) based on how many times i will wear it. If i think i will wear the design often, i think i may be willing to spend more.

That is just me.

Thanks for the reply, will wait until 25 November then! Will also take a closer look / try on the yankos to check fit and design.

Shipping Carmina into SG from Skoak will incur an upcharge imposed by Carmina since they have a physical shop in SG now. Try shipping it to Batam or JB if you have friends there and collect later.

My AS Moore and Carmina burgundy museum calf adelaides are for sale.

I'm interested in the Moore. AS is a brand I've yet to try.
Let me know if you're letting go any Vass Oxfords, especially Old English II.
Regardless I'll drop you a text now.

Don't own any but have tried all.

I'm same size in Capital and Rain. 0.5 up in Simpson.
