Are the test shoes mandatory for either or both lines? If so the cost would be definitely be bumped up beyond eur1k though u r getting 2 pairs of shoes of cos, which can be diff design but same last/shoe type.

The test shoes are not mandatory for either. For first timers, they are a good idea IMO, but not strictly necessary.
The test shoes are GYW. And very well made. Very, very well made, for 400 Euros. Better than numerous "high end" makers in fact.

this is the style.
Well since you are limited by budget then maybe it's time to be less choosy. Jonleeks reccomendation comes pretty close.

You know the saying, beggars...

hey guys, how would you compare Cheaney against Loake, more specifically the Classic range vs 1880 top range which is at a similar price point? Really limited info online except that Cheaney tends to be wider than Loake.

Where can I get loake in Singaporr? My comfy but ugly ecco died and I need shoes for work.
Im stuck between the decision of going full leather, hand stitched or comfy but glued (back to ecco) or cheap/glued (pedro).

I went LLYR, want to buy liao but dont have my size for that pair that I wanted. Went clarks/hush pups/ecco, the shoes are comfy but ugly (almost Square toes). Simon carter looks okay but unsure about quality.

Im thinking I should just wack one ferragamo or church?

To be clear GYW isnot hand stitched. Go to Robinsons for limited selection of Loakes or Ed Et Al at Millenia Walk.

Wah kow eh. Not fair comparison leh. Like that current loake discount also cannot compare with cheaney right?

well, Cheaney is running a winter sale and some classic range shoes are price at 175gbp (Harrington) vs Loake 1880 range at 155gbp (aldwych, cadogan), so I see it should be worth a comparison

after all I'm asking people with experience in both brands for opinions on the quality, more specifically Cheaney Classic range (mid range?) vs Loake 1880 (supposedly their top range), that are priced almost similar during this ongoing sales

Not sure if you are referring to the Russian reindeer hide that sunk off the coast of Cornwall? Ya, it a replication of this hide texture...

I meant Russian Calf (Yufte leather) as a whole

There's the old batch of hides (sunken ship) and modern production using the same/similar techniques. Seal oil, willow bark, birch tar the whole shebang.

So there's actual Russian Calf and Hatchgrain embossed Calfskin :D

P.S Cool Fact: There's a very distinctive smell from real Russian Calf. Chanel even has a perfume called Cuir de Russie been influenced by it :s13:

Leather soled stitched shoes need breaking in and arnt comfy right out of the box. So be aware of that should you want to make the jump.

Please skip Church and most Fashion brand shoes unless you're more interested in paying for their marketing team than actual quality of construction. At that price point might as well pay a visit to Carmina Singapore or Holdfast (local vass guys if they do have rtw stock for you).

Same above applies for Ferragamo unless you're buying Tramezzas. Esp pls avoid the Studio line.

Glued but comfy suggest trying Geox.

Dont touch (with a 10 ft pole) the likes of Aldo/Pedro/Beetlebug/Blackhammer/Everbest etc please

Antonio uses Horween hatch grain. In other words, the only similarity is the embossed cross hatch pattern on the leather.

"True" Russian leather is probably lost to the world now, unless someone decides to try to get more out of the Metta Catharina wreck (there apparently is some left but too dangerous to retrieve). Even in the 1700s, the methods Russian tanneries used to tan and curry leather were pretty mysterious to their contemporaries, much less modern day ones. So there is probably no one who can emulate the "same" methods.
Though some tanneries might come close. Only know of tripleskin.

Thanks for the advice. I made the decision to get from ed et al. Everyone around my work place wearing obermain/rockport/hanson bootmaker and every time see holes opening and there.

Whats the different between GYW and hand stitched? How can I tell which is which?
