Personal opinion comparing my 2 pairs, I prefer the Meermins. Having said that, my edetals are from the 2nd collection and the 3rd collection onward had better leathers and finishing. However, based on what I've seen in the shop with the 3rd collection, my opinion still stands

Another big difference is that Ed provides recrafting. How practical is this in real life? Or do you guys simply buy new pair when it's worn out ?

I've also checked out Ed shoes. It seems the leather are rather hard. It's that the same for meermins?

Practical? You mean you would rather pay 3-400 for a new pair than 150 for a resole?

If you think the leather is too hard - hard truth probably is, you're used to handling corrected grain or faux leather that's soft, pliable, and cheap.

Rich ppl just buy new pair
Otherwise just resole or u take precaution like put toppy or tap to prevent freq resoling if u walk alot

Hi guys. Fresh out of school and stepping out into the working world. Hope you guys can help me out a bit.

An uncle of mine passed down a couple of pairs of shoes for me to start with. I don't think these are cheap shoes right?

Several questions which I hope you guys can help me with.

1) Can you guys advise how best I take care of these shoes?

2) The pair on the right looks a bit off. Think it's been kept for too long. Is there anyway to restore it?

3) I know some people add stuff to the soles to protect them. Is there a need for me to do it?

Some basic shoe care tips: start using shoe trees to keep your shoes in shape, shoe cream to clean/nourish the leather and shoe polish (wax) if u want a shine and somewhat water protection.

For the soles, yes u can do a vibram/topy for heel and forefoot areas. Most cobblers can do that.

Google should yield u more shoe care details if u interested and can approach the shoeshine uncle here if u need more tips

The recrafting doesn't make much diff to me since I would probably just add a topy once the soles start to wear off. I use plastic toe and heel taps to prolong the initial life too. Thereafter, I find that Continental topys seem to be very durable indeed.

The main difference I find in the leather is the finishing.

Expensive can buy saphir or cheaper get Tarrago, cheaper the basic kiwi.

Iirc tarrago trying to sell shoe kit, u can get those if u want something fancy. They don't come with shoe trees.

Any sort of protection/caring/creme/polish is better than no care.

I vote plain socks in a different color (e.g. blue), to avoid distracting the viewer from what is otherwise a very pleasing contrast between the light grey and tobacco suede

Have worn plain gray and blue before.... Yesterday is a more informal day at work so play around with colourful sock

Where are your socks from? Material looks good in the pic.

From taobao. it is meant as winter wear, thicker but not to the extend it get too hot in sg. It is not a high sock though. Have to pull up here and there throughout the day.

The Johnston & Murphy pair looks nice. How old are these? Do you have pics of the soles, to satisfy my curiosity?

I'd recommend you check the shoes for any holes or tears first before continuing. No point spending time, effort and money before realising they cannot be salvaged.

Do they fit your feet well?

If they do, clean the shoes well with a dry clean cloth. Maybe a slightly moist cloth if needed.
I'd recommend to start with a brown or neutral cream to nourish the leather.
I will also recommend that you do at least two layers of thin cream allowing time in between layers for the cream to penetrate the leather.

Thereafter apply brown or neutral wax to shine or buff.

Should look good after the above steps.

Repeat as needed to maintain the shoes.

Archules shoes look decent for their price. No experience with them but just saying based on info avail on the web.
