While either way is fine, PetiaC is right and it has been my preferred method for years. I find that wearing a few times would encourage the "natural flex" on the leather uppers and reduce the tendency that the topy will come apart. Also wearing it a few times will increase the surface area on the soles for the rubber to adhere to but that may not be necessary since every cobbler worth his paycheck would file them roughly before applying adhesive.

I have had shoes topied when new and while the difference is minimal on single sole shoes, I find that they can be quite unyieldy on already stiff double sole shoes and have since preferred to break into my shoes a couple of wears before I send them for topy. Incidentally, it is actually a good way to check if the shoes fit well before you commit abit more money to topy them.

Any recommendations for cleaning stinky leather insoles? Not my shoes, but I need to get rid of the smell. The insoles are non-removable.

So far, I Googled baking soda and vinegar.

Here's a tip. Moisten cloth or paper towel with some hot water and wipe the inside of the shoe. Next douse another cloth or paper towel with any one of the following essential oils: teatree or oil of oregano. This will get rid of the fungus/ bacteria that is causing the smell. I don't like the smell of vinegar on my shoes and I find baking soda reduce the longevity of the insoles. They are good for cleaning pots though.

Let air for between 30mins to 3hrs, preferably not under direct sunlight.

Another tip if you are using cedar shoe trees is to file it with a very fine sandpaper to release natural fragrance. You can also impart fragrance by dropping a few drops of essential oils of your choosing on the shoe trees before inserting them into your shoe.

If you want to know where to buy essential oils, you can go to any aromatherapy shop or buy online from iherb.com. You can use my code if you like, for a discount.

love my pair dr martens, not your usual exec shoe, very good quality to be honest, sadly there was a chip off the coated leather at the sides(idk if this is normal), I do treat it with leather care every now and then, ran with it(chasing buses), got fairly soak in town due to heavy rain, you name it.

Hi guys. Fresh out of school and stepping out into the working world. Hope you guys can help me out a bit.

An uncle of mine passed down a couple of pairs of shoes for me to start with. I don't think these are cheap shoes right?

Several questions which I hope you guys can help me with.

1) Can you guys advise how best I take care of these shoes?

2) The pair on the right looks a bit off. Think it's been kept for too long. Is there anyway to restore it?

3) I know some people add stuff to the soles to protect them. Is there a need for me to do it?

Thanks for any help guys!

Were there other sizes when you bought it or just size 45? Yeah, good idea to get the topies for your "all weather boots" :D

I think there were 44s and 45s. Noticed a similar thing at the 2nd sample sale, the boots were left with a few sizes even after a few weeks. Guess they're not as popular as regular shoes.

Edetal vs meermin - which has better quality?

I do not own edetal but thinking of getting one in their upcoming sale hopefully soon.

My opinion is quality is important but U should also be looking on the design as well as the lasts. Type of leather, colour and lasts design etc. lasts is an important factor for me cause it impact my comfort level of wearing as well as the shoe front (slight squarish or almond round)...

I have recently received my pair of black Nicol from ed et al. Prior to this, I have been using kiwi to polish my working shoes though I have been hearing how kiwi is bad for shoes.
But since I spent a bit on this ed et al, I hope to give it something better so to lengthen its "lifespan". Can someone provide recommendations to polish and maintain it? Something to keep the leather in good condition, some shine but yet not too attention seeking...

TIA :)

Because the side zip is stopping me from buying... Otherwise I wear boots too.

Hmm... you mean this pair of boots has side zips on the inner throat? That's same as the pair that PetiaC bought right?

Pants from Benjamin Barker, chambray wool mix.

Nice pants :D

Get the black or neutral saphir creme polish @ 25 from Ed et al? You could also try the saphir blue creme (some said it gives a nice sheen effect while still appearing black) which is still in stock last I check on Sat. Else, Saphir Renovatuer @ 30 bucks which gives a soft shine is also good.

U mean edetal? For RTW should be similar quality leather. MTO, custom and RTW leather should all be diff quality as price is diff too

I vote plain socks in a different color (e.g. blue), to avoid distracting the viewer from what is otherwise a very pleasing contrast between the light grey and tobacco suede

Personal opinion comparing my 2 pairs, I prefer the Meermins. Having said that, my edetals are from the 2nd collection and the 3rd collection onward had better leathers and finishing. However, based on what I've seen in the shop with the 3rd collection, my opinion still stands.

These are the Mountbattens which are a derby boot, no side zips. The Farquhar is the newer model which is an oxford boot with the side zips. I saw the Farquhars in a nice brown color at the 2nd sample sale, but I passed because I too cannot stand the side zips. :p
