You determine whether to buy shoes (that might or might not be good) based on what people say about customer service? I buy based on whether I like the shoes and what people say about quality. :) in any case, i dont have shoes from Ed but ive interacted with him and been to the shop once. They're not outrightly frdly, but frdly enough. but to each his own.

if the service sucks, why would i go back?
to me service is important, and which customer would not want to feel appreciated?

their quality might be good and yes i could maybe purchase one pair, but if i am going there to receive bad service, that would be my last pair there.

since you say they are still friendly, i could probably make a trip and find out for myself

Hypothetically, lets say shoe A offers a superb price-quality ratio, top grade stuff for cheap. As a result of that, biz is brisk and they don't have time for small talk.

Shoe b is okay quality, expensive. Nobody patronises and thus, staff can make more time to chat.

Some might choose A, others B. me? A. Like I said, I'm Singaporean, used to okay service, but prefer a bang for the buck. Heh.

That's interesting.

Here's mine experience with Ed Et Al when I am doing a MTO over at Fiftyfive. The guys there are extremely helpful when it comes to fitting when I told them that I am very particular about the fit as I will always have blister at the heel if the shoe is either too big or tight. After knowing my concerns, we proceed to the fittings and because I have a wider feet width, he recommended me a double E width and it totally feel good! To my knowledge, their RTW shoes are single E width and for MTO, they can provide up to double E width.

When I am about to take off my fitting shoes, he asked me to keep it on till the end of the session so as to make sure the fit is good for me. From there, we proceeded on to the colours and designs and from here, I can tell that the guy who serve me know his products well and will give me his frank opinions. These kind of simple gestures actually make me feel that they are "tailoring" a shoe for me based on my personalities and in person.

The whole process took around 1-1.5 hours and we did have a lot of personal talks including shoes as well as his personal experience and opinions. As I feel more comfortable talking with him, I extended the talk by asking him about the polishes. He explained the differences between them and did not sell hard on their products but asked me to buy when my shoe arrive so that they can choose the specific colour for it.

All In all, I think that the staffs in Fiftyfive are very well-mannered and friendly, including KBKS which I did a couple of shirts with them before.

I always believe this " Never try, never know".:D

1-1.5hrs? Wow, I took less than 40 minutes. Maybe I'm not the kind who talk much so Edwin didn't feel compelled to engage me at a personal level.

Having said that, I also experienced the same thing where he requested me to try on the shoes for close to 15 minutes to ensure I was comfortable with them.

By the way, I heard about the new collection launch tomorrow for Ed Et Al.

any comments?

If they are really priced at $600, I will give them a miss and go straight to customs. The $200 difference is too minute in my opinion.

What I know is that they are using Annonay leather which are totally different from their normal Italian calf leather. And this is the first time Ed Et Al is using Annonay leather after following them for quite sometime.

Might make a trip down to personally feel the difference. :s8:

I would at least go down and have a look before making my own judgement on their service. After all, what I end up with is their shoes that stays with me, not their service.

After saying that, I'd also like to give my experience at Ed Et Al. I've been there 4 times in total.

1st time I dropped by to take a look at their RTW collection. Went in, there were some others looking around so I just browsed around. Staff were very polite but not chatty which was fine by me. I've never liked to have people constantly trying to chat me up while I browsed around. Definitely not pushy or hard-selling.

2nd time I made an appointment for a MTO and was served by Woody. Took my time to select a design and try out the sizing. Advised me on the sizing and let me try out a couple of different sizings and widths. Was also asked to keep the pair of shoes on while I selected the colours to make sure they were comfortable and only took them off when everything was confirmed. Woody gave some suggestions to me as well during the selection of colours and finishing etc.

3rd visit was when my shoes were ready for collection. Dropped by and tried them on and walked around to make sure everything was alright. Staff was polite as usual.

4th visit was to get the Saphir Renovateur and polish. It was 2 or 3 weeks after my 3rd visit and was pleasantly surprised that Woody still remembered my name.

I personally didn't think they had any indication of bad service at all. After all, everyone's perception of good service is different.

That said, I'm definitely going to drop by DW when I have the time to check them out as well. Who knows.... I might get one from them to try out as well....

Awesome sharing on your real life experience!

I think men fashion in Sg is really looking good, with men even concerned about their shoes, shirts, suits and dressing

Not just in quantity but also quality as we grime more knowledgeable and discerning about what we want to wear

I remember when I was young, I always wait in anticipation in buying a pair of Nike or Adidas sports shoes, they still have a place in my heart of course but the excitement and of buying a true gentleman shoes. Now that a totally different thing and experience altogether. Maybe it also because Singapore can be boring, men are not looking just a boring black shor for daily work, hoping it can last for many months.

I think Ed and DW are both excellent Anx provide quality in their fields and I am sure they would have predicted the Sg men would one day be so passionate about their shoes, who knows we can even compete with the ladies hehehe

So its really a good thing for all the consumers here to be actually spoilt off choices, today you can literally choose as design and colour you Want and have it Made specially for you

Now if that not amazing to start with

Gentlemen, wear your shoes in good health

ok here's my review.. I went to ed.. and was served by Leo. superb services provided by him, greeted by cashier lady. rest were busy with e New collection I suppose.before that they were indulging with someone whom wears suit.

anyway that aside, leo was superb. explaining me every detail and how to wear a shoe lol. I wore size 42 but was supposed to wear 39 for e snug fit as it'll stretch thereafter.

but cognac merlion ii was not available in that size. I was so impressed I paid in full and got it straight , though waiting time is 4 weeks.

went down tonight to order an MTO from edetal. As I already had in mind which design i want, going down was more of choosing colour and get the right fit. served by Woody, and he provided alot details on how to make sure the fitting of the shoes was snug but not tight.

Nobody is an expert on shoe fit and size except you (because you wear it) :)

However, it's likely to be a UK 9. There's no way you'll know unless you try. I wear 7.5 in AE and 6.5 for Meermins. Their Linea Maestro line offers top grade European leathers, and a customised design for approx 450 sgd shipped. Comes with trees.

Oh yes, it's HAND-WELTED :)

Thank you so much for the advise , shall proceed to order TAN SACPA CALF, from the Linea Maestro > NORVEGESSE collection, it comes with free tree? nice!!!!!

shoe noob here, never owned a pair of shoes from the brands described in this thread.
like to find out more about how creases affect these shoes.
Do they crease as badly as those aldo-level shoes?
Do you have to be very careful when you wear such shoes, like not bending your feet too much and stuff?
Any pics of shoes that have been worn hard and long to share?
Thanks!

Which brands are you talking about? I presume Ed Et Al or Meermin?

First off, Aldo's quality is far below these brands, but far cheaper too. So it depends how much you are willing to spend. A little Googling will tell you Aldo is quite hated by some online communities.

However, creases cannot be avoided, unless you are wearing steel boots. Having said that, 'these brands' usually have better leather and crease lesser and more uniformly, but will need shoe trees to keep them that way. Fit also plays a part in the way the shoes crease.

Whichever shoes you wear, it is ridiculous having to be extra extra careful with your shoes because they are more expensive. I really think you should get shoes to fit your style, not you 'fitting' the shoes. If you tend to bash your shoes around, just don't wear shoes from 'these brands'.

Sorry for lack of pictures. Let someone else do it. :s13:

Is only a pair of shoes at the end of the day

There is no need to stress with shoes, just enjoy it. The main thing is to make you presentable.

I Agree wholeheartedly! I wear my AE without putting much attention that it crease etc. shoe is meant to be worn wear a expensive shoe and stess over might as get those cheapo.

Buy a $600 custom, u can buy maybe 10 pair of cheapo after consider the cost one may put in the money to resole etc and be stress free.

For maybe down the road I will get a shell cordovan AE, today those factory seconds are at usd$449

Yes I was talking about the brands like meermin Ed or even like G&G, compared to those mass market brand like aldo.

The high end brand always seem to look very good but haven't seen much pictures where they've been worn long and hard. I know they can be resoled and last for a long time, just wondering how the leather uppers hold up with time.

Thanks for taking the time to share the info!
