hi sorry not sure if this question of mine has been answered as i just stumbled on this thread.
Is there anyway to root the mibox 3 with firmware 1.41 i think that's my firmware.
I followed the instructions here on this link
http://en.miui.com/thread-89090-1-1.html
using rootgenius and then miboxproroot_ROM_GreaterThan_1.3.50 which doesn't work.
Over the years, there have been a few different versions of 4K Xiaomi TV box released -- which are:
(1) Amlogic S802 32bit A9 Quad Core 2G RAM 4GB Flash (HDMI 1.4, has OTG port + micro SD card slot)
(2) Amlogic S802 32bit A9 Quad core 1GB RAM 4GB eMMC Flash (HDMI 1.4, has OTG port + micro SD card slot)
(3) Amlogic S905 64bit A53 Quad Core 1GB RAM 4GB eMMC Flash (HDMI 2.0, no OTG port & no micro SD card slot)
(4) MediaTek MT8693 64bit A72(x2) + A53(x4) Hexa Core 2GB RAM 8GB eMMC 5.0 flash (HDMI 2.0, no OTG port & no SD card slot)
Above is as simple as I can summarise for the different models of 4K Xiaomi TV boxes released over the years.
(1), (2) & (3) are black colour; while (4) is white colour.
**
Version (1) is oldest model while version (4) is latest version of 4K Xiaomi TV box.
My 4K Xiaomi TV box is version (1). I successfully rooted it using KingRoot.
You can download KingRoot here:
https://kingroot.net/
If your 4K Xiaomi TV box is version (2), (3) or (4) -- I'm not sure if KingRoot can successfully root it or not.
Another rooting app that I heard last time -- which was also successful in rooting 4K Xiaomi TV box is 360 root:
http://root.360.cn/
**
My main purpose of rooting my 4K Xiaomi TV box is not to install Google Playstore -- but rather to:
- Remove bloatware
- Prevent unnecessary apps from auto start up (or auto restart in the background)
- Plus ability to run some apps that require root.
**
Except for version (4), the other 3 versions (1), (2) & (3) of 4K Xiaomi TV box ONLY has 4GB flash storage.
On my version (1) 4K Xiaomi TV box, the Xiaomi TV box firmware itself --- already used up HALF the 4GB flash storage !!
This means on my version (1) 4K Xiaomi TV box, the actual storage space available for me to install apps is just (4GB - 2GB) = 2GB ONLY !!
In order for Google Playstore to work, you'll also need to install Google Play Services.
Both Google Playstore + Google Play Services combined will used up at least 100+MB of storage space !!
Plus Google Playstore & Google Play Services will auto download/upgrade to new versions over time & each time they (auto) update -- will used up more & more storage space !!
Based on the above,
- Although I'm able to root my Xiaomi TV box -- I choose NOT to install Google Playstore & Google Play Services into my Xiaomi TV box.

I know, I know...
If no Google Playstore, how to install apps that we usually get from Google Playstore -- into the 4K Xiaomi TV box ??
For any app that we usually get from Google Playstore -- most likely we can get/download the app's APK file directly from this Website:
-
http://www.apkmirror.com/
For any app from Google Playstore that I want to install into my 4K Xiaomi TV box:
- I just search & download the app's APK file from Web site 'apkmirror.com'
- I scan the APK file using Web site
https://virustotal.com/ -- to make sure there's no virus in the APK file
- Then I copy the APK file into a thumb drive
- Connect the thumb drive to the 4K Xiaomi TV box & install the app
For most apps this is usually done just 1 time only.
Once most apps I need have been installed into my 4K Xiaomi TV box, I hardly need to go to back to 'apkmirror.com' -- unless I have to get a newer/updated version of an app.
I've used my rooted version (1) 4K Xiaomi TV box for 2+ years already -- without the need to install Google Playstore
Hope the above helps.
