I doubt rooting the box, has anything to do with streaming from Sg.

I am also not sure is HK IP region locked, seems strongvpn users are able to stream, but PIA-HK server still cannot stream asian movies.

I have Mibox2 connect to Astrill VPN Netgear router, connect to AsusRT56U to fiber SN 50Mbps.
Set to Astrill VPN as RouterPro UDP HK server 2 or 3. Get HK IP.
Each time do SpeedTest, dl results fluctuates. Between 1-6Mbps.
Use the default XiaoMi app (not rabbit app but XiaoMi app).
Stream drama quite smoothly except for initial first 30 secs or so buffering. Korean drama "Lai Zhi Xin Xin De Ni" and "Tian Long Ba Bu 2013" good, smooth and clear. Not alot of new movies.
VST not smooth
Rabbit app not very great. Hobbit very jerky. Frozen on and off ok.

How do I verify streaming asia movie?

Think my SN50Mbps is terrible. Maybe change soon.

Yah. I need Funshion and PPTV. All HK drama cannot stream without VPN. Anybody here got experience in setting up VPN with the Mi Box?

Quick question, I just have to setup the Mibox for VPN access. Do I need to do any config with the router? There is a VPN option in the settings for the Mi Box. So I just config the settings and I am good to go?

Thanks

Your vpn provider will have guides on their support page to set this up, likely using pptp.

Hmm... Then what's the benefit of the jailbreak version?

If my primary purpose is to watch HK TVB on-demand, secondary is stream TVB live, which version should I get? And do I need VPN in each scenario?

Thanks!

xiaomi only has tvb drama on demand on its network. If you want tvb live you will need the tvb app and vpn to work. In this scenario, any android box will work. pple buy xiaomi to jailbreak due to its low pricing. However, if 3rd party are selling too high a price, then there is no point in buying the xiaomi to jailbreak.

Thanks for your explanation.

So if I wish to watch tvb on demand, I can just get the normal xiaomi, without jailbreak.

If I wish to get live streaming of tvb, then i need VPN + jailbreak.

1. Are the above 2 statements correct?

2. For VPN, i can just configure the VPN on xiaomi box 2, no need to configure my router to connect to VPN right?

3. May I know what other benefits are there for jailbreak? I don't see them listed on qoo10 or taobao sellers' websites.

1. Yes, you are right.
2. I have v1 no v2, so I cannot comment on that one.
3. Angmo like to install xbmc. Chinese like to install pptv, soju and the likes for variety of streaming options as xiaomi may not have all shows available on it. Also some like to jailbreak for the hell of it.

Thanks for your explanation.

Forgive me if I am wrong. I bought the Xiaomi Box v2 from HK. The box is so called jailbroken. I saw the demo. If buy original, even youku cannot be loaded. Baidu also refused to stream certain things. I was playing around with it.

They sold the jailbroken version which I bought. It just cost another SGD$8 bucks. So no big deal. I never kenna chop carrot anyways. But I saw after that , the same page from youku could stream liao. The UI is different from the so called original xiaomi box v2. Alot of streaming apps are also automatically installed.

However, when returned to Singapore, nothing works. Thats why I was confused and started asking in this thread if I needed VPN services.

Hi all,

Notice most use the xiaomi box for streaming content but what about:
- playing videos from portable hard disk
- airplay and mirror cast for apple and android device.

Considering to get this device for above functions and wonder how well it does it.

Thanks

just got this box, slightly disappointed with it but i've played with it enough to answer your queries

1 - yes its able to support, not sure how many codecs are supported. i've put in a couple of videos and this far 1 wasn't supported. seems pretty decent to me

2 - miracast works, however the display is grainy and looks upscaled on my 1080p tv. also display isn't in full screen either. i've been searching for ways or hacks to improve image quality but it seems like there is none. miracast was supposed to be HDMI without wires. feel like it's a huge miss.
