Not sure about the warranties part. But the promo code should work. It's the tech expo event thing. If it really doesn't work you could wait till Friday and use dbs/posb card for 10% off capped at $20 with FRIYAYS.

I'm looking to buy Mi 5 but didn't understand what is this ROM about. So thanks for the explanation. I saw the Mi 5 Newstar is selling on Qoo10 is the China ROM version but the shop installed some Google apps and play store. Can I use it immediately in SG? Or must I still change to global ROM? Also, my data is 3G - no impact on using this phone right?

Firstly, I do not trust what the Chinese dealers have installed in the phone. The phone might indicate China ROM when you check phone info, but it may be fake ROM with Malware installed.
To be careful, try to 'overwrite' existing ROM with original ROM for Miui website. You can choose to install either China Rom or Global rom, but I'm prefare Global rom as I know it will definitely work well in Singapore with 3g and 4g.
China rom does not have Playstore built-in and also not sure if 4G works in Singapore.

The version Newstar (on Qoo10) is selling is China ROM and they said they install Playstore for their customers. So, even if I buy from them, I should still change from China to Global ROM? Will that erase the Google apps they have already installed inside?

@alfy, May I know where did you buy your Mi 5?

Anyone bought directly from Xiaomi official website (on Taobao) or Newstar (sim lim)? Did you run any problems using in Sg?

Let me make it simpler for you to understand.
Export sets...whether you buy from local dealers or direct from Taobao etc.. comes from china and will have china rom installed. However, some dealers may have installed modified(fake) roms with malwares. For a layman, one cannot tell for certain if the phone comes with Fake rom or not. I would still re-flash to original rom from the miui website to be confident it is genuine rom.
I emphasise again:-
I WOULD NOT TRUST THE PRE-INSTALLED ROM THAT CAME WITH THE EXPORT SET!

For re-flashing of rom, you can choose to install China or Global rom.
Global rom is guaranteed to work in Singapore and works just like the set you bought from the local dealers at $619.

China rom in uncertain to work in all networks (3G or 4G etc) and doesn't have PlayStore in it. Even if you can install Playstore separately, you may have problems with the Apps at the later stage. People install China rom only because they feel China rom is updated faster than Global rom and is more current. But China rom requires more tweaking to get it working in Singapore, so is not advised for newbies.

After properly re-flashing of the roms to your phone, subsequent updates will be automatic by OTA (over-the-air) so I recommend that you re-flash IMMEDIATELY to original rom (China or Global rom...up to you) after you received the phone.

I hope this gives you a clearer picture now.

There are 3 method. Flashing via updater, fastboot and recovery. I used the updater, which is the easiest. But it will not always work on modified rom. I had to unlock the bootloader on my MI MAX to flash via fastboot but luckily this time round I don't need to for my mi5. Here's the link to flashing via updater. Very straight forward.

wow... just drop the rom in internal memory and update just like that? sounds super simple... I'm waiting for my phone to arrive and will definitely try it

yep that's it. transfer .zip to phone, open updater and just choose the .zip file and update.

yes it will appear automatically. everything is included in the rom file.

does that mean the updater will override all the base ROM? there's no chance of malware staying in the phone right? cant wait to try it
