There are 3 method. Flashing via updater, fastboot and recovery. I used the updater, which is the easiest. But it will not always work on modified rom. I had to unlock the bootloader on my MI MAX to flash via fastboot but luckily this time round I don't need to for my mi5. Here's the link to flashing via updater. Very straight forward.

yep that's it. transfer .zip to phone, open updater and just choose the .zip file and update.



yes it will appear automatically. everything is included in the rom file.

im getting error msg "couldn't verify update package". any ideas what went wrong

Mi5 is based on Android 6, think need to use Google installer v2. Easiest is to unlock bootloader and flash to global rom.

Some modified/custom ROM can work, some don't. If it doesn't work, then you'll have to unlock the bootloader and then flash the global ROM.

Should be safe unless there are ads popping up or obvious bloatware or it is already sealed when you receive it. But it's still safer to flash the official ROM.

Happily set up phone, saved all data to transfer. Off phone, take out sim card and bam!!!! Different size sim card!!!!

You can try the updater method 1st. It's really simple. If it doesn't work then apply for bootloader unlock and flash.
