Xiaomi phones have made the news off and on in the last few months for their cheap, value for money phones and corporate moves. More recently, there were also reports that these popular devices also silently sent out user details to a remote server. That news came on the heels of other reports of smartphones being pre-installed with suspect apps.

We thought we'd take a quick look into this, so we got our hands on a brand new RedMi 1S:

We started with a 'fresh out of the box' test, so no account setup was done or cloud service connection was allowed. Then we went through the following steps:

• Inserted SIM card
• Connected to WiFi
• Allowed the GPS location service
• Added a new contact into the phonebook
• Send and received an SMS and MMS message
• Made and received a phone call

We saw that on startup, the phone sent the telco name to the server api.account.xiaomi.com. It also sent IMEI and phone number to the same server:

The phone number of contacts added to the phone book and from SMS messages received was also forwarded.

Next we connected to and logged into Mi Cloud, the iCloud-like service from Xiaomi. Then we repeated the same test steps as before. This time, the IMSI details were sent to api.account.xiaomi.com, as well as the IMEI and phone number.

At this point, this was just a quick test to see if the behavior being reported can be confirmed. In response to the reports, Xiaomi itself has released a statement addressing potential privacy concerns (In Chinese on the company's Hong Kong Facebook page, with an English translation linked).

Just received this update notification, JHCMIBF34.0 Stable ROM for Redmi 1S.
Changelogs are:
-> Improved the security of Cloud Messaging.

This update most likely comes from the various security issues the Xiaomi have and Mr Hugo Barra had also made an statement on it( https://plus.google.com/+HugoBarra/posts/bkJTXzyXXmj ) and most probably the 'update' he mentioned would be this.

M1 selling Redmi Note at $0 for $39 plan.
May want to consider Note over 1S. Bigger screen and 2GB RAM.
The 1GB RAM on 1S is a bit tight.

The latest MIUI update for 1S has lesser load on the RAM, stays around 200++ MB most of the time, even with two apps running in background. In the past, more than one app running in background will have your RAM be around 130-160++ MB.

My mom is using the $25 plan, w/o internet plan. Very light user. I am planning to use the "lite mode" as she only need simple functions like call, camera and gallery, thus 1S should suffice.

1S on M1's $25.68 plan is free, should be suffice for your mom's light usage.

Agree!
Lite mode is less memory hungry.
Since 1S is dual SIM, you can even add a data SIM card.

Download the ROM to your computer. Connect your 1S to the computer and move the downloaded ROM to your phone's internal storage.
At your 1S, go to the Updater app, press the menu button and select 'Select Update Package' and it will detect your downloaded ROM package and prompt you to install it.


EDIT: Just got updated that there's a v35 update for 1S from the Updater app.

battery drain when i updated to 34.0

anyone has issues with battery drain after the update of 34.0?
my battery drain quite fast after i did the update yesterday..
now with the update 35.0 I am abit skeptical to update 35.0 now....?

and how to save battery for redmi 1s???? can anyone teach?

V35 just released. Updating now.

According to change log, fix missing app icons and improve cloud messaging security.

Did not verify as phone is in Lite mode.
