very easy one.

1. request for unlock permissions at en.miui.com
2. once they sent you an email/SMS that you can unlock...
3. proceed to download the miunlocker tool from en.miui.com
4. the steps there on the website are already very detailed. just boot your phone to Fastboot mode, and unlock it.
5. then you flash TWRP and then flash the latest Global ROM.

can be done in a day (the confirmation takes a few days though)

My case is same as rias92......bought a 3S from Qoo10 and it came with a China ROM though with Google installed and in English. I only bought the 3S to use as a StarHub Access Point to my SingTel main phone since SH has much better roaming rates to MY, HK, ID, etc. I just don't want to put my ST SIM in as well cause I still prefer working off WP10 on a day-to-day basis.

There's still a few things coming up in Chinese which I can't read so it might be worth switching to a Global ROM.

It already has MUIU8 and is updated but if I change to Global ROM does all the installed Apps etc. get wiped? The Miui website says "Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack" so I would have said a change is not a downgrade?

I love the 3S for being able to use as an IR Remote Control for my Media Box....the remote failed a couple of months ago.

using the phone as spare phone for 2 weeks when I was overseas...playing a game on it almost everyday..

totally no major problem with the phone...good deal for this price..

Cons are as follows though:
1) speaker is really soft..cannot even hear in full volume when playing my game..(bad design as the speaker is at the back of phone)
2) have some 3G/4G switching problem, sometime it just doesnt camp to 3G/4G and stay in E...my game cannot play without 3G/4G..so it's very obvious to me..

Pros:
1) superb batt life..
2) without casing, the phone is very slim (during my first few days of usage, cos casing that I bought online havent arrive. after arrived, pop in the casing and the phone seems bulky and fat...but what to do, need to protect the phone..)

ps: phone bought from lazada, original xiaomi

1. You cannot do anything about this

2. Flash custom CM13 ROM, that should resolve the 4/3G/2G issue

xiaomi won't fix that bug

I tried that solution when I first started setting up my phone. No 2G/3G/4G issue so far. Used the phone for 2 weeks already. Signal will drop to 'E' at underground places but once I go to ground level auto switch back to 4G.

it didn't get stuck at 2g, but just tends to drop to 2g more often than my iphone place side by side... (iphone 4g, but 3s on E, both same network but diff sim card)

weird,

i guess you have to root and disable the 2G Bands completely

that will fix that annoying bug,

xiaomi won't fix don't bother

Not sure if this is a batch related problem? Mine is local set, 0 problems thus far. For $200 this is simply the best value for money phone I have ever owned

Same here. I did, however, follow the solution steps when setting up my new Redmi 3S. No issues or bugs so far. Probably I'm lucky. Local set purchased from Xiaomi Suntec store. Really value for money. Will be better if Redmi 4 Prime is in stores. Even better value looking at its specs.
