In terms of HW specifications, Mi 3G router is a downgrade from DIR-865L which is a decent router from Starhub even though it is old. DIR-868L is a minor upgrade for DIR-865L and can be bought from Carousell at S$20-30.

Mi 3G : AC1200, 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports only.
DIR-865L: AC1750, 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports

Do you have any problems with the DIR-865L? My one is still working well with Starhub 500Mbps broadband. Not intend to change yet as the tenants have no complaints about its performance. Coverage is decent too for the 118sqm flat.

Not so sure about Mi Router Pro's range and coverage, but at least the HW specifications are better than DIR-865 with AC2600 and 1 USB 3.0 port, three Gigabit Ethernet ports only but hopefully that is fine.

If you buy the Mi Router Pro, you can still set up the DIR-865 in AP mode or repeater mode in case you need better coverage in some locations.

Honestly, the router did perform better than expected especially in the first few years when i owned most of the AC devices in my house:s13::s13:.

But nowadays, when there are more than a dozen device each capable of maxing out the 500mbps plan connecting to the router, sometimes i can literally feel the connection stutter for half a second or so especially during the weekends. i suppose that the processor and ram is no longer up to scratch:s11::s11:

anyway, i have bought the mi router pro. hopefully it is worth the investment. i might post my observations once i get everything up and running.

I see. Mi Router Pro seems to be pretty good.

I was actually looking for Mi 3G router when I visited my relative in a small town in Fujian China, unfortunately the small town only has the low end Mi 4c router. He was using a RMB 59 Mercury single band 300Mbps N router with his 50 Mbps fibre plan and IPTV from China Mobile (nominally RMB41 per month combined but offer price is RMB21 per month for combined service, really cheap), recently they have a free upgrade to 100Mbps and the router is not good enough to my like. So in the end I got Phicomm 斐讯 K2P router dual band AC1200 gigabit router for him at RMB198 (S$40) in the local China Mobile shop and I would say that was a decent router at that price. Speedtest shows around 120Mbps download speed wired with his Dell laptop and around similar speed of 110-120Mbps wireless with the same laptop, my Huawei P20 and iPhone 6S. Higher than the nominal 100Mbps. And his ZTE IPTV box becomes more smooth now that his laptop and Huawei P10 can use 5GHz wifi.

Phicomm K3 router is more famous but the small town does not have it.

Openwrt on the Mi Router 3G works fantastic.

I like Openwrt for the following reasons:

(1) Stock firmware could have backdoors. Openwrt is open source so far less likely to have backdoors.
(2) Openwrt supports multiple languages. The default is English.
(3) The Luci GUI interface is fantastic.
(4) Though it is suitable for the casual user who just wants a router firmware that works reliably, it is excellent for the tinkerer who likes to play around with Linux and power up your router to its full potential!

This link summarizes it well:

Thanks. Will try on mine.

Do you know if this router can receive a LTE input from dongle plugged into the USB port?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Mi Router 3G wireless is quite lousy, sold it after trying for a few days, weak even if only one wall between, disappointed by all the hype. This is with the original Mi firmware, after seeing the results, didn't bother with openwrt.

But if you want, checkout https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/wwan/ethernetoverusb_rndis

or https://oldwiki.archive.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/ethernetoverusb_rndis

Link returns 404.

Perhaps you've had a lemon set or you channel settings need tweaking. I'm using it as the sole router in a 1300 sq ft flat. I can get decent 5 GHz speeds from anywhere. This is with both stock and Openwrt firmware.

Maybe site maint, the article can also be read at their archive site - https://oldwiki.archive.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/ethernetoverusb_rndis

It works but I was comparing Mi R3G with a older TPLink Archer C7 running continuous iperf3 tests. It was very sensitive to positioning of client devices, move the phone a few cm will see the speed drop, have to move around to find a sweet spot to get good speed consistently. In comparison the older Archer C7 was able to maintain its good speed over a big area, no matter where I move the phone.

Mi Router 3G is AC1200. Archer C7 is AC1750. Not sure if that may be causing the difference.

Price is also quite different. I believe the Archer C7 is more than double the price of the Mi Router 3G.

I have not used a DLink router for a long time. However I feel generally a router with external antenna is better in terms of coverage.

I've used the Xiaomi Router Pro for 2 years now I believe, and when I first got it, I actually think the coverage is better than the TPLink Archer C9 that I was replacing. Especially the case where previously I get no WIFI signal in one of my bedroom when using the Archer C9, but at least I get a weak WIFI signal with the Router Pro.

The Mi Router 3G has better specs than the 4. And the price is similar.
