Yes. My trip to Tokyo last Dec, encountered a few restaurants which insist on cash only.
If you are using physical IC cards, you’ll need cash to top up as well.

There are still a handful of public transport means that do not accept IC cards, especially in outskirt towns, so that would also be cash.

Yup. But luckily I drove out of Tokyo instead of taking public transport. so no issue. But the topping up of the Suica card is a pain as only at Narita can use card. In Tokyo, had to use cash to top up.

japan i always carry CASH
rarely use card for now

ever kenna 1x good lesson card not accepted by ryokan but lucky still can go CC cash advance to pay for accommodation stay
