Yes, battery seems to drains quicker. I am one of those who has a bad habit of charging phone overnight, so it’s always 100% in the morning.

My phone battery charging capacity is at 97%.

On my M1 4G, 30 mins of use during a typical underground train journey will drain 2-3% Max.

On Zero1 with 5G set to auto, it’s 5-6%.

Thanks for confirming the QoS over host telco user. Suspected this “catch” with all MVNO. So far, speed has been pretty reliable and usable even in a crowded train or places such as Orchard Rd. 🤞

Thanks for sharing the battery usage of 5G vs 4G. On the GOMO thread many have shared their speed test result but not real world battery usage/impact of 5G on battery life.

Would you say it’s worth to use roughly double the battery usage for 5G (so as to have faster latency and speed)?

Also, with the lower latency, higher speed and lower network congestion, how much benefit is realised in real world usage? For example, twice as responsive in loading and totally no instance of buffering compared to 4G?

5G batttery consuimption is always higher than 4G especially on GOMO with VOLTE enabled... On 4G is not so bad with other telco with no VOLTE enabled.

2 more days of real world usage:

After 10 hours of similar usage from 100% charge, I’m left with 51% with 5G Auto, and 65% with 4G only selected.

Any real advantage of using 5G? Yes, though marginal and may not even be worth the battery premium.

Here’s my connectivity experience during rush hour underground MRT ride (morning & evening rush):

M1 4G - multiple “dead” spots. You can get full 4G bar but nothing loads.

Zero1 4G (ST) - 1 “dead spot” with error “could not activate mobile data network”. That’s because signal went to 0 very briefly.

Zero1 5G (ST NSA) - Perfect.

Thanks for sharing. Seems like the biggest pull factor for 5G over 4G is about network consistently in crowded areas and during peak periods, not so much about higher speed or lower ping.

I was previously on GOMO 4G plan, now on Zero1 4G plan. From my personal experience, both perform very well when it’s not overly crowded or peak period.

But during times when it’s overly crowded or peak period, the network on 4G will be throttled quite significantly (not because I exceed data entitlement) to balance out bandwidth for the users and the speed can drop until 1 to 10 Mbps.

The dip in real world performance can be felt when the speed is throttled until this low, as you will be able to feel the responsiveness drop and also the loading time is increased. For me I feel that the minimum threshold is at least around 20 Mbps to have good real world performance such that you won’t really perceive any drop in responsiveness or extended loading times.

In most places and most occasions the speed is about 60 Mbps on average, if it’s not overly crowded or during peak period. There are also times I can hit about 200 Mbps when conditions are more ideal. For normal day to day usage, I would be more than satisfied if a network can consistently have at least 20 Mbps regardless of any kind of real world factors that could cause congestion, and going 5G may be just the solution albeit it comes with greater battery usage.

Can we receive SMS OTP while overseas without any active roaming plan (on the $6.90 Zero1 Starter plan) ?

Yes, all Zero1 plans (except for the Jumbo plans) come with 'International Roaming Voice & SMS' service included for free, so you will be able to receive SMS OTP when overseas.

For those using jumbo $12 plan, if exceed 60GB like in 3rd week how? Would the data simply stop till next bill or auto renew?

Should be no more data until you manually top up or wait for auto renewal every 30 days (if you have added your credit card details in your account and opted for auto renewal). So if you do nothing, you can still use the remaining mins and SMS but no data until next top up/renewal.

If you choose to do a manual top up before the current 30 day period, my understanding is that the remaining mins and SMS will still expire by the current 30 day period, and the new top up mins, calls and data will expire 30 days from the date of manual top up. Hence, the 30 day period is brought forward as opposed to if you were to wait for next auto renewal.

So glad I made the jump from M1.
Speed inside home: 26 Mbps -> 84 Mbps
It's the opposite for me when I compared my Circles and Zero1 bandwidth at home.

Circ - 150+M
Z1 - 60-80M

But Z1 consistently a lot faster when I'm outside like around MRT stations. Circles seem to have a cap at 150+M which I'm able to max out from where I'm at home.

i think whoever is on 5G network will be on first mover advantage, meaning majority of ppl are on still 4G, so u are using 'dedicated' network that most ppl are not fighting with u. so overall user experience should be good especially speed.

but certainly 4G vs 5G, i do not think 5G will really bring any much extra benefits comparing to 4G. since. consumers cannot really take advantage of such fast speed but most battery drain or data runs out faster.
latency will be better on 5G but only ppl who are doing online mobile gaming can be benefited from it.

nevertheless, it is still good to be on 5G now. i wish zym will also have 5G soon. i am on 1 year contract so cannot switch to zero1 yet.

Jumbo plans are ok only if you use it locally. It doesn’t have the following value added services.

1) Caller number non display
2) Voice and SMS roaming
3) Parental control
4) Add on packs for local talk time or SMS

Most users can do without 1), 3), and 4). But 2) is crucial if you want to be able to receive SMS OTP when overseas, or be able to make/receive a voice call overseas, or make international calls locally.

yes, seriously no point if 2) is not there. i will never go for it. same goes to Gomo or Giga - also cannot do roaming call but only roaming sms.

Just switched from M1, here's my first impression of Zero1.

For the same price I am paying, I only had 40GB data on 4G, 100 mins &SMS on M1. I used to try out M1's 5G as well. On M1 5G SA, highest speed I was able to get was 647Mbps, in town area, on my iPhone 13 Pro.

I wanted to switch to their SIM only plan for $19.95 with 100GB data 1000 mins & SMS but was told "Bespoke is on the new system and cannot switch to old system". Whole lot of BS, so switched to Zero1.

Same price, 60GB with 5G before FUP kicks in, 500 mins & SMS. Did a speedtest, and results were pretty impressive for 5G NSA (still using the same phone).

Waterway PCN. The best result of all. This test alone had consumed about 2.6GB of data

Overall signal, well it's SingTel backbone. You can't go wrong with it. But somehow, it tends to flip between 3G and 4G at home, when I was able to get consistent 4G or even 5G SA with M1.

Customer service had so far been pretty good. They were quick to respond to tickets and ported my number over without a hitch.

singtel is the king for 5G now which is no doubt. i hope zym will have 5G soon. the rollover of data feature for zym is better than any MVNOs.
