wow looks like ViewQwest really sucks compared to Singtel (looking at LA Comcast).

It could be your RT-AC68U also play a part in the speedtest results. If you can use a PC connected to the router. My results shows my mini PC J4105 > Raspberry Pi 400 > Asus RT-AX82U.

The RT-AX82U CPU will still be much faster than the RT-AC68U.

Speed isn't everything. Routing is too. ;)

Especially if a lot of content is on local CDN mirrors and ST does not play well with those behind other Singaporean IXes. For "local traffic" you'll find traffic going to HK/India and back to Singapore - it can be a very terrible experience if you're doing latency sensitive work.

I used top to monitor the CPU load. Doesn't seem saturated.

As a baseline, I ran speedtest on the local ViewQwest server.

results around 250 Mbps +/-

Code:
admin@RT-AC68U-5B78:/tmp/home/root# /usr/sbin/ookla -c http://www.speedtest.net/api/embed/vz0azjarf5enop8a/config --interface=vlan2 --server-id=2054 --progress=no --format=human-readable
     Server: ViewQwest - Singapore (id = 2054)
        ISP: Viewqwest

Upload: 99.52 Mbps (data used: 95.0 MB)

Question: if I'm on 1 Gbps plan, does it mean that each port on the ONT is limited to 250 Mbps?

It is not about CPU usage. The whole system is slow and that may limit the speedtest result.

If the baseline speed is only 250Mbps, something is wrong already. You may want to use a laptop directly connected to the Viewquest ONT to see the speed is normal or not. That should give you around 900Mbps or higher.

If that is not the case, contact Viewquest for support.

If that is the case, it is either you have some QoS turned on on the RT-AC68U or the speedtest client in the RT-AC68U can not be used for your test due to the slow system.

The other thing is that the command line output mentioned interface is vlan2 and you may want to check that as well.

All in all, use a laptop or desktop to test first.

Thank you.

I'll try to get a laptop connected directly to the ONT (not very convenient as many laptops no longer have ethernet ports).

I've filed a support request with ViewQwest, hopefully they can get a technician down to take a look.

I have the Ugreen USB 3.0 ethernet adaptor. I believe @xiaofan uses that too, and/or the USB-C variant.

The USB2.0 adaptors won't work since there's a theoretical 480Mbps throughput max on USB2. It'll work for basic connectivity, but not for testing max speed.

Yes I have one Ugreen USB 3 to gigabit Ethernet adapter. I used that one for SpeedTest as my two Acer Swift 3 laptops do not have Ethernet ports.

Now that adapter is uses as WAN port for my Raspberry Pi 400 running OpenWRT 21.02 as a router (replaced Intel J4105 mini PC running pfSense as I use the J4105 mini PC as a Linux server now).

However, I bought three UGreen USB 3 to 2.5G Ethernet adapters (two USB 3 and one USB Type C) so I am using them as the adapter for speedtest. Kind of overkill but they are meant for my 2.5G home network experiment but I have not really proceed with the experiment in the end -- not feeling the need to get an NAS yet and choose to pay Google (and probably Apple later) for the cloud storage.

Even though I have a NAS, I can't use it for iPhone/Android device backups. -_-

It's one way to force us to pay for storage upgrades. So I pay Apple and I have MS 365 (partly cos Office, but actually because of versioning protection for my documents).

just wondering what's the international speed for singtel fiber at peak period (10pm)?

Viewqwest is super slow.

Will try to run a test later. Do you have the server ID? I can't get LA Comcast on my options.

Have put together a simple shell script that just sequentially tests various servers.

Code:
#spdt.sh
#!/bin/bash

# Singtel
speedtest -s 25960

# ViewQuest SG
speedtest -s 2054

# PT FirstMedia - Singapore
speedtest -s 7556

# Comcast - Sacramento, CA
speedtest -s 9436

# Spectrum - Los Angeles, CA
speedtest -s 16974

# University of Texas, Austin - Austin, TX
speedtest -s 16089

# Optus - Melbourne, AU
speedtest -s 30932

# Misaka Network Inc - Tokyo, JP
speedtest -s 44988

# SIMPLYCONNECT - Dar es Salaam
speedtest -s 13902

# Bell Mobility - Vancouver, BC
speedtest -s 17402

# Telstra International - HK
speedtest -s 44340

16974. Apologies it's "LA Spectrum". thank you.

one point I was wrong about on the command line binary. It does seem to use multiple connections after all (using netstat).

which Singtel plan is this?

Maybe I should just get a second fiber line
Standard 1Gbps. I don't believe in subscribing to any higher tier plans for now. In fact, I still think 500Mbps is more than adequate for most home use cases.

Using a mini J4105 PC running Ubuntu 21.10 and it is connected to Asus RT-AX82U router. The speed is better now. So I guess the Raspberry Pi 400 still has some limitation and I am using a Ugreen USB 3 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter as the WAN port.

Test is done with SIngtel TV off but with kids are using Youtube.

just wondering what's the international speed for singtel fiber at peak period (10pm)?

Viewqwest is super slow.

Have you got Viewquest support to look at your connection issue? If you can not get normal wired download speed to be above 850Mbps at any time for 1Gbps plan, there is an issue already. That is regardless of the ISP used.

I'm a bit surprised by it too. These are with the limiter arbitrarily set to 980. Not sure if it made any difference. Also, the Khadas VIM3L is pretty capable, definitely a bit more powerful than the RPi4.

Am testing a modified script to export to csv automatically, but am trying to make sense of the output. Just throwing numbers around, it seems I can just divide by 125000.95 to convert the result to Mbps, though it's not quite accurate. I have no idea why that's the factor, though. :s13: If anyone can shed light on how to derive the final Mbps output, I would be very grateful.

It's easier to manipulate the outcomes in Excel with it all tabulated nicely in a .csv rather than a wall of text.

Code:
# csvspdtst.sh
# Automatically pipes outputs to results-YYYYmdd.csv.
# Each run will overwrite existing file by the same name.

#!/bin/bash

# Set output file in results subdirectory
RS=./results/results-`date +'%Y%m%d'`.csv

# Singtel
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps --output-header -s25960 > $RS

# ViewQuest SG
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s2054 >> $RS

# PT FirstMedia - Singapore
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s7556 >> $RS

# Comcast - Sacramento, CA
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s9436 >> $RS

# Spectrum - Los Angeles, CA
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s16974 >> $RS

# University of Texas, Austin - Austin, TX
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s16089 >> $RS

# Optus - Melbourne, AU
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s30932 >> $RS

# Misaka Network Inc - Tokyo, JP
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s44988 >> $RS

# SIMPLYCONNECT - Dar es Salaam
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s13902 >> $RS

# Celcom Axiata - Kuala Lumpur
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s4956 >> $RS

# Bell Mobility - Vancouver, BC
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s17402 >> $RS

# Telstra International - HK
speedtest -fcsv -uMbps -s44340 >> $RS

Quick manupulation of the original output (above) with the duplicated+formulae'd output below:
Results.png

Edit:
- V2. Added a date component to the filename. It can now be run as a daily crontab with the necessary modifications. ;) Add %H%M%S" if you want the time also - but export filename to a variable and reuse that variable for filename in each line instead so you have a single file each run.

As requested by @rubicon, Speedtest on Singtel at 10pm on a Saturday night. Network under light load - one Netflix, two surfing textual sites. Ubuntu server on a ethernet connection, direct to switch.

PS: Figured out the formula is a hard 1/8 of 1,000,000. Thanks again @xiaofan. Updated the formula.

Have created an Excel sheet that automatically imports the numbers from the export csv, converts the numbers to a more human-readable format.
Update2: Created a new sheet that changes the layout of presented data to match the CLI output. Simple concatenation and text formatting formulae (See screenshot)

Link to Excel file: https://file.io/tIUbNTBew8CQ
Open it, go to Data -> Refresh. Select your exported CSV and it should automatically fill and format the data. Go to Alternate tab, copy/paste in HWZ. Done. :)

x/125000 = x * 8 / 1,000,000 seems to be a simple conversion from B/s to Mbps. Looks like -uMbps has no impact for the csv format.

My SIngtel test results at around 10pm, with an Intel J4105 PC running Ubuntu 21.10.
