Short summary of VQ recontract to 3Gbps plan.

1) Price wise. it's a no brainer. Just do it.
2) Process wise. Just login with your singpass to VQ and do a recontract. Less that probably 5 clicks.
3) if you are on static ip. they will followup with a email to ask if you want to continue. If your reply yes. you will receive another email confirming. It's $4.04 per month

On the day of service switch over. dude will show up with new ONT. just replace. everything else stays the same.

My thoughs
For 3Gbps plan. Just get a 2.5G capable AX wifi router. Preferred to also have a 2.5G lan port to optimise bandwidth usage

iperf3 test to a 10G host max out at 2.82Gbps both up and down.
iperf3 test from a 2.5G ethernet port max out at 2.35Gbps both up and down

iperf3 test from iphone and macbook air on AX. speed is exactly the same as 1gbps connection.

Will entertain any intelligent and logical questions.

Edit/Add on:
1) the power adaptor is the same as the one for the small black box. But i swap mine for a new one
2) installer also gave a a CAT6E cable. Not taken out of packaging yet. no use to me
3) since he gave ethernet cable. I ask for new optical cable whch he obliged

all in pleasant and fuss free switchover.

did you use a device with a max Lan port speed of 2.5G to connect to the new modem to do a speed test, which show you a max speed of 2.5G from speedtest?

Sent from A universe Where pink PWNED everything
Indeed. Even router supports 10G doesn't means the single desktop/device supports 10G Lan port to fully utilize the 3G. However, the remaining bandwidth still benefits multi-device network.

come to think about it, for me and those who signed up the 3gbps plan (not sure those on higher speed)

we were given this new modem which can support only 2.5gbps, what happen to the other 0.5gbps?
The person who came to setup will test from his notebook using 10G adapter.
From his notebook when he do speed test, it hit about 2.8+Gbps for download on my 3Gbps plan.
Now cos my WAN connection only 2.5Gbps, I can only hit 2.3+Gbps.
Earlier on he was at another person place on 10G plan, the speedtest screen show 8+Gbps result.

Sorry, noobie question here...
So if I upgraded to 3Gbps plan, when installer come to install, they will change the old modem to new modem, which will have 1 cable connected to our router, if router WAN connection only 2.5Gbps, it will never fully utilize the 3Gbps. What if we have router that support WAN aggregation, can we have 2 cable connected to our router and set WAN aggregation to fully utilize the 3Gbps?

I have confirm with the person who came to do the installation & log case with VQ, no access will be given to the ONR due to the bridge mode.

Another noobie question here..
What the benefit to have the access to the ONR? To modify setting inside like DNS?

Cannot, there is only 1 Multi-G port for connection in bridge mode.
The rest of the 4x1G port are not for aggregation.
If you really want to make full of the available then look for those device which support 5G/10G ba.
Need to pay more up front.
To me up from 1G to 2.5G already 2.5x improvement, gd enough. (pocket no deep enough). :p

simple answer, if you si si want ot max the 3Gbps. then connect to a 5Gbps or 10Gbps router. It's in bridge mode and only the 10GbE port is active.

imho... this is the smart and logical choice for probably 99% of the the population.
unless you wanna setup multi wan failover. then different approach needed.

I look at the WAN aggregation of asus router, it stat "WAN aggregation let you to Combine a 2.5Gbps port and a 1Gbps port to unlock up to 3.5Gbps of WAN bandwidth."

So this statement is not true?

Anyway, since I gonna replace my AC68U, so I just looking around. Personally speaking, 1Gbps is sufficient for me, don't mind having room for improvement but looking at my usage, I don't think I can fully utilize 3Gbps or even 2.5Gbps based on my usage, it is just for speed tests and ownself shiokness nia.

And I also do not intend to setup multi-WAN failover, I have 100Gb SingTel mobile data and due to WFH, my usage per month is less than 3Gb on my mobile data, I can live through with mobile data hotspot when Viewqwest is down...

Most important... balance on economical (for my pocket) and efficiency (acceptable performance).

friendly advise. wan aggregation is a ugly word. Don't get me started. And based on the questions you are asking, it's not for you. Certain amount of network competency is required and even then it comes with a big bag of worms!
Multi wan failover is a different thing altogether.

but hey.. it's a free world.

None of the local ISPs supports WAN Aggregation since the ONT/ONR do not support IEEE 802.11ad.
https://www.asus.com/sg/support/faq/1039053/

For local ISPs using unbridged ONR, or using dual 1Gbps plans, then there is a possibility to use Dual WAN Load Balancing.
https://www.asus.com/sg/support/faq/1011719/

However, based on the report here, there is only one LAN port activated for the VQ bridged ONR. So there will be no support of Dual WAN Load balancing either.

You may want to go with an 2.5G capable router and use the 3Gbps plan as a true 2.5Gbps plan. In that case, I will suggest to go with the good ones with dual 2.5G ports. For example, you can go with things like Asus GT-AX6000, Asus TUF-AX6000 (or the China version TX-AX6000), GL.iNET MT-6000, etc, depending on your budget.

Ok, thanks for all the answers and time to bear with me.

I will start to look around for GT-AX6000 or TUF-AX6000 and wait for VQ to come and install for me probably next week.

Modified to use cheaper 2.5G capable router to use the 3Gbps plan as 2.5Gbs plan.

@xiaofan , any recommendations for PCI network adapter card if using a 2.5Gbps wan? (good and realiable)

also , more worth to get 2.5gbps card or 10gbps card right away?

Not an expert here as I do not have normal desktop PCs myself. I only use mini PCs with built-in 2.5G ports (Intel I226-V chipset). I also got a new mini PC with dual SFP+ ports along with dual 2.5G ports recently.

I use Ugreen USB 3.0 to 2.5G adapters with my Windows laptops and Mac Mini M1. I have also got two USB 4 to 10G NIC for my my two newer Windows laptops (with USB4/TB4 ports) and Mac Mini M1.

Since you use a desktop, I think you can get good PCI-E 2.5G adapters or 10G adapters. There are many cheap and good 10G adapters from Taobao, @TanKianW and @Mach3.2 are the experts here. I think you should just go with 10G adapter in this case.

You can also get decent PCI-E adapters from TP-Link or Asus Singapore if you want local warranty.
TP-Link TX201 2.5G adapter
Asus PCE-C2500 2.5G adapter, XG-C100C 10G adapter.

Just installed my VQ 3Gbps after the tech come down and change the black ONR. Too bad my router is still 1Gbps(will change soon). So far everything works ok.
